Before there was photography, before there was lithography, before there was etching, there was engraving. A goldsmith takes a steel tool called a burin, pushes it through the surface of a polished copper plate, and carves a groove. Ink is rubbed into the groove. The surface is wiped clean. Paper is pressed against the plate under tons of pressure. The ink transfers from the groove to the paper, and the image appears. This is the oldest intaglio printmaking technique, and for 200 years it was the only one. Every engraving you see in a museum, from Martin Schongauer to Albrecht Durer, was made by a person pushing a sharp piece of steel through solid copper by hand.
Engraving is an intaglio printmaking technique in which lines are cut directly into a metal plate using a burin, a sharp, lozenge-shaped steel tool. The burin is held at a low angle and pushed through the metal, displacing a thin curl of copper and leaving a V-shaped groove. The depth and width of the groove are controlled by the pressure and angle of the tool. After the plate is engraved, ink is forced into the grooves, the surface is wiped clean, and damp paper is run through a press with the plate under high pressure, forcing the paper into the inked grooves to pick up the image.

How Engraving Works: The Burin and the Plate
The burin is the defining tool of engraving. It is a steel rod, typically 5 to 8 centimeters long, with a shaft that fits into the palm and a sharpened tip shaped like a diamond or lozenge. The cutting edge is ground to a specific angle that determines the width of the groove. The engraver holds the burin at a low angle to the plate and pushes it forward, using the ball of the hand or the hip for leverage. The tool displaces metal rather than removing it in chips. The displaced copper forms a thin curl called a burr, which is scraped away with a scraper tool to leave a clean groove.
The plate is typically copper, 1 to 3 millimeters thick. Before engraving, the plate is polished to a mirror finish. Any scratch or imperfection on the surface will print. The engraver works systematically, building the image from a network of lines. Tone is created through hatching and cross-hatching: parallel lines for light tones, crossed lines for darker tones, and dense networks of overlapping lines for the darkest passages. There is no tonal area in engraving, only lines. Even the darkest shadow is made of individual grooves cut into the metal.
The Cleveland Museum of Art, in its 2026 exhibition The Renaissance Engraver at Work, invited master engraver Andrew Raftery from the Rhode Island School of Design to examine early engravings from the collection. Using a stereo microscope, the team confirmed that Master ES, one of the earliest known engravers, used goldsmiths' tools, including a hollow circular punch, to form small circles on the Virgin Mary's mantle. Origins and History
Engraving emerged in Europe in the 1430s, probably in the Upper Rhine region of Germany. The technique grew out of goldsmiths' practices. Goldsmiths had been engraving designs into metal objects, including armor, musical instruments, and religious objects, since ancient times. The niello technique, in which a dark alloy is rubbed into engraved lines to create contrast, goes back to late antiquity. The idea of printing from an engraved plate likely came from goldsmiths taking impressions on paper of their designs to keep as records.
The earliest surviving engravings are undated designs for playing cards, probably made in Germany in the late 1430s. The first 50 years of engraving in Europe, roughly 1450 to 1500, remain only partially understood. Scholars do not know with certainty what tools early engravers used, how they prepared their plates and inks, or precisely how they printed. The Cleveland Museum of Art's research with Andrew Raftery is part of an ongoing effort to answer these questions through close material examination.
By 1500, engraving had spread across Europe. The technique was adopted in Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy, and it became the dominant method for distributing images. Engravings were the first mass medium for visual art. They allowed compositions to travel across Europe and beyond, carrying styles and ideas between artistic centers. After 1550, intaglio techniques including engraving and etching dominated both artistic printmaking and commercial illustration until the mid-19th century, when lithography overtook them.
Key Artists Who Engraved
Martin Schongauer (c. 1450-1491)
Schongauer was the first great engraver. Working in Colmar, Alsace, he produced about 115 engravings in the 1470s and 1480s, including The Temptation of Saint Anthony (c. 1470-1475). His engravings were widely collected and copied, and his technical mastery of the burin set the standard for the next generation. Michelangelo reportedly painted a copy of Schongauer's The Temptation of Saint Anthony as a young apprentice.
Albrecht Durer (1471-1528)
Durer is the most famous engraver in history. His Melencolia I (1514), Saint Jerome in His Study (1514), and Knight, Death and the Devil (1513) are the most studied engravings ever made. Durer's technical mastery of the burin was extraordinary. He could produce tonal ranges from the palest gray to the deepest black using networks of lines of varying density and direction. Erasmus praised Durer's engravings for their naturalism, and the printing plates themselves found eager buyers. Durer also experimented with etching and drypoint, but his engravings remain his most influential prints.
Lucas van Leyden (c. 1494-1533)
Lucas van Leyden was the foremost Netherlandish engraver of the early 16th century. He combined engraving with etching on single plates, a hybrid approach that exploited the precision of the burin and the freedom of the etched line. A 2024 study by Olenka Horbatsch in the Journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art examined Lucas's portrait of Maximilian I (1520), arguing that he was the first European artist to combine etching with engraving on copper. Marcantonio Raimondi (c. 1480-c. 1534)
Raimondi was the first engraver to specialize in reproducing the work of other artists. He engraved copies of Durer's woodcuts, which Durer objected to, and later became the primary engraver of Raphael's designs in Rome. Raimondi's engravings of Raphael's work, including The School of Athens reproduction, spread Raphael's compositions across Europe and established engraving as the primary means of reproducing paintings for distribution.
William Hogarth (1697-1764)
Hogarth used engraving to produce his moral narrative series, including A Harlot's Progress (1731-1732) and Marriage A-la-Mode (1743-1745). Hogarth engraved his own paintings, creating prints that were sold by subscription. His engravings combine narrative detail with social satire, and they were widely pirated, leading Hogarth to campaign for the first copyright legislation for visual artists.
How to Spot an Engraving
The key difference between an engraving and an etching is the line quality. Engraved lines are clean, precise, and deliberate. They have a mechanical regularity because they are cut by a tool, not drawn through wax. The lines tend to be of consistent width within a passage, swelling and tapering only where the engraver deliberately changed pressure or angle. Etched lines, by contrast, have the variation and spontaneity of a drawn line.
Look for the telltale signs of the burin. Engraved lines often have a slight pointed end where the tool entered the metal, and they may show a subtle curve where the engraver's hand pivoted. Cross-hatching in engravings is typically more systematic and regular than in etchings, because the engraver is building tone through deliberate, controlled cuts rather than freehand drawing.
Both engravings and etchings are intaglio prints, so both will have a platemark on the paper. The line quality is what distinguishes them. If the lines look carved, it is an engraving. If they look drawn, it is an etching.
Engraving belongs to the intaglio family, which also includes etching, drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint. Etching uses acid rather than a burin to create lines, producing freer, more drawn marks. Drypoint uses a needle to scratch lines, creating a burr that prints with a velvety quality. Aquatint uses powdered rosin to create tonal areas. Mezzotint roughens the entire plate and then smooths areas to create light. Engraving is the most physically demanding of these techniques, requiring years of training to master the burin.
