The outside of the Ghent Altarpiece looks nothing like the inside. When the polyptych is closed, you see two figures standing in niches: Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. They look like stone statues. They are not. They are oil paintings, executed entirely in shades of gray and pale yellow to simulate the color of sandstone. Jan van Eyck painted them in the 1420s or early 1430s, and the illusion is so convincing that visitors to Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent frequently mistake them for sculpture. When the altarpiece is opened, the same panels reveal nothing but color: Adam, Eve, angels, and the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb in full oil paint. The contrast between the monochrome exterior and the polychrome interior is the point. Grisaille on the outside, color on the inside, and the transition between the two is a theological statement about revelation.
Grisaille is painting executed entirely in shades of gray, or occasionally in a single color with variations in tone. The word comes from the French "gris," meaning gray. Grisaille can serve several purposes: it can simulate stone sculpture, function as an underpainting for a subsequent color layer, or stand as an independent work. It has been used continuously in Western art since the 12th century, and it appears in stained glass, panel painting, manuscript illumination, and architectural decoration.

Grisaille is a tonal painting technique that uses a restricted palette of grays to model form without color. The painter works from a dark ground, typically black or dark brown, and builds up lighter values in successive layers of gray, white, and intermediate tones. The result reads as sculpture: a three-dimensional form modelled by light and shadow without the distraction of hue.
The technique exploits the fact that the human visual system processes form and color through partially separate channels. When color is removed, the brain focuses on tonal relationships, and the illusion of volume becomes stronger. This is why grisaille figures often look more sculptural than fully colored ones. The absence of color forces the eye to read form through tonal modelling alone.
A 2020 conservation study published through White Rose eprints examined the technical challenges of conserving grisaille paintings, noting that the restricted palette makes retouching extremely difficult. Any color introduced during restoration becomes immediately visible against the gray ground, and metameric effects, where colors appear to match under one light source but not another, create complications that do not arise in polychrome paintings. The study also found that grisaille paintings are typically constructed from a dark ground layer working upward in lighter shades, as confirmed by cross-section analysis. Grisaille also exists as a glass-based paint used on stained glass windows. In this context, grisaille is a dark paint made from iron or copper oxide mixed with ground lead-silica glass and a liquid binder, applied to the glass surface and fired at 650 to 700 degrees Celsius. A 2021 literature review published in the Journal of Cultural Heritage surveyed 38 scientific studies of grisaille paint from the 13th to the 20th century, finding that iron oxide was the dominant coloring agent throughout most of history, with copper oxide preferred in central Europe. Grisaille has two parallel origins, one in stained glass and one in panel painting. The stained glass tradition is older. In 1134, Bernard of Clairvaux issued a prohibition against colored glass in Cistercian monasteries, forcing glassmakers to use shades of black on clear glass. This monochrome technique, enhanced with touches of color as the restrictions eased, spread beyond the Cistercian order and by the third quarter of the 13th century was standard in French churches. The term grisaille was applied to this glass paint, and it remains the standard term for the dark paint used on stained glass today.
In panel painting, grisaille emerged in the 14th century as a way of simulating sculpture on the outer wings of altarpieces. A 2024 study published in Studia Historica Gedanensia examined the grisaille paintings of Hans Memling, who introduced several innovations to the technique. The research traced Memling's use of grisaille across multiple works, from the Triptych of the Last Judgment (1465-1473, Gdansk) to the late Almazan wings (1485-1490). Memling used both "pure" grisaille and "demi-grisaille," a hybrid form that combines monochrome figures with polychrome elements. The study notes that Memling's grisaille figures occupy an ambiguous space between living beings and stone sculpture, with some figures appearing to step out of their niches. The practice of painting grisaille figures as simulated sculpture became widespread in Netherlandish art after Van Eyck initiated it in the Ghent Altarpiece. A study published in Philosophica analyzed Van Eyck's grisailles in the Ghent Altarpiece, arguing that they constituted a deliberate challenge to sculptors. By painting sculpture so convincingly in monochrome, Van Eyck demonstrated that painting could do what sculpture does, model three-dimensional form, while respecting the liturgical requirement for restraint on the exterior of altarpieces. By the 17th and 18th centuries, grisaille had expanded beyond its liturgical function. Painters used it for decorative schemes, ceiling paintings, and independent works. The French term "grisaille" first appeared around 1625, though the technique had been in use for centuries before it acquired a name.
Van Eyck's grisaille panels on the Ghent Altarpiece (1432, Saint Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent) are the foundational works of the technique in panel painting. The figures of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist on the closed altarpiece are painted in shades of gray and pale yellow to simulate sandstone statues in niches. A later Van Eyck work, the Thyssen-Bornemisza diptych, pushes the technique further by introducing four different types of stone in different colors, abandoning strict monochromy to create a more complex sculptural illusion.
Memling was the most prolific practitioner of grisaille in early Netherlandish painting. His works include the grisaille reverses of the Triptych of the Last Judgment (1465-1473, National Museum, Gdansk), the Jan Floreins Triptych (1479, Saint John's Hospital, Bruges), and the Almazan wings (1485-1490). Memling's innovation was the demi-grisaille, which combines monochrome figures with limited color elements, creating a hybrid that blurs the boundary between sculpture and painting.
The origins of grisaille in wall painting can be traced to Giotto's Arena Chapel in Padua (c. 1305). The Cycle of Virtues and Vices on the lower walls of the chapel depicts allegorical figures in monochrome, painted to look like stone reliefs. These are among the earliest examples of grisaille used to simulate sculpture in a mural setting.
Michelangelo's Doni Tondo (c. 1507, Uffizi, Florence) uses grisaille in the background figures, which are painted in shades of gray to resemble nude sculptures. The contrast between the polychrome Holy Family in the foreground and the monochrome figures in the background creates a visual hierarchy that separates the sacred from the profane.
Goya used grisaille for some of his most powerful late works. The Pinturas negras (1819-1823, Prado, Madrid), painted on the walls of his house, are not strictly grisaille but use a severely restricted palette of blacks, browns, and grays. Earlier, Goya painted full grisaille oil sketches as preparatory studies for his tapestry cartoons, demonstrating the technique's continuing role as a planning tool.
Look for paintings that appear to be sculpture. If a figure in a painting looks like it is carved from stone, standing in a niche, and lacking any color except gray, brown, or pale yellow, you are probably looking at grisaille. The technique is most common on the exterior wings of Netherlandish altarpieces from the 15th and 16th centuries. When the altarpiece is closed, the grisaille panels are visible. When it is open, the polychrome interior is revealed.
In stained glass, grisaille appears as the dark painted details on glass surfaces. Look at any medieval stained glass window and you will see that the faces, drapery folds, and inscriptions are not cut from colored glass but painted on in dark lines and washes. That paint is grisaille. In the Ghent Altarpiece, you can see the full range of Van Eyck's grisaille technique by viewing the closed altarpiece. The figures of the two saints are painted with such subtle tonal modelling that the stone appears to have physical depth. Compare these with the donor portraits of Joost Vijd and Elisabeth Borluut on the adjacent panels, which are polychrome, and the contrast between monochrome and color becomes the central visual experience of the closed altarpiece.
Grisaille overlaps with several other terms in this glossary. Stained glass uses grisaille as its primary surface paint for details and shading. Trompe l'oeil often employs grisaille to simulate sculpture, as in Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece panels. Underpainting is related but different: grisaille can function as an underpainting for a subsequent color layer, but it can also stand as a finished work. The term chiaroscuro describes the tonal modelling that grisaille relies on, though chiaroscuro typically operates within a colored palette rather than a monochrome one.
