In 1874, a painting was exhibited in Barcelona that made viewers lean forward and touch the canvas. Pere Borrell del Caso's Escaping Criticism shows a boy climbing out of a painted frame, his hands and head pushing into the viewer's space while his legs remain inside the picture. The painting was originally titled A Thing That Cannot Be, and the joke is that it cannot be. A painted figure cannot climb out of its frame. But Borrell painted it so convincingly that the eye refuses to accept the boundary between the painted space and the real one. The painting sold for a handsome price at the exhibition, and it has been in the Banco de Espana collection since 1922.
Trompe l'oeil is a painting technique that creates the illusion of three-dimensional objects existing in real space. The French phrase means "deceive the eye." Unlike ordinary realistic painting, which asks you to accept a representation of reality, trompe l'oeil attempts to make you forget you are looking at a painting at all. It works by matching the scale, lighting, and perspective of the painted objects to the actual viewing conditions, so that the brain processes the image as a physical presence rather than a depiction.

Trompe l'oeil depends on a specific set of conditions. The painting must be the same scale as the objects it depicts. The light in the painting must match the actual light falling on the painting's surface. The perspective must be calculated for a specific viewing position, usually straight on and at a fixed distance. When these conditions are met, the brain's visual processing system cannot distinguish the painted object from a real one, at least for a moment.
A 2024 study published in Argumenta by researchers at the University of Bergamo offered the first comprehensive theory of trompe l'oeil based on attention. The authors, Gabriele Ferretti and Francesco Marchi, argue that trompe l'oeil works by preventing the viewer from perceiving the painting's surface. In ordinary picture perception, you simultaneously see the surface and the depicted scene. Trompe l'oeil suppresses the surface perception, forcing the visual system to treat the image as a real object available for interaction. The technique requires precise control of perspective, shading, and cast shadows. The shadows are especially important. In Borrell's Escaping Criticism, the boy's hands cast shadows onto the painted frame, and the frame itself casts shadows onto the supposed wall behind it. These nested shadows create a chain of spatial relationships that the eye reads as physical depth. Remove the shadows and the illusion collapses.
Trompe l'oeil is as old as Western illusionism. Roman frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum, dating to the 1st century CE, include painted doors, windows, and architectural details that simulate real openings in the wall. The most famous ancient anecdote involves the Greek painters Zeuxis and Parrhasius in the 5th century BCE. Zeuxis painted grapes so realistic that birds pecked at the canvas. Parrhasius then painted a curtain so realistic that Zeuxis tried to pull it aside to see the painting behind it. Parrhasius won, because he fooled a human rather than a bird.
In the medieval period, trompe l'oeil largely disappeared from European painting. It returned during the Renaissance, when the recovery of linear perspective gave painters the mathematical tools to construct convincing spatial illusions. Mantegna's Camera degli Sposi (1465-1474) in the Ducal Palace of Mantua includes a painted oculus in the ceiling that appears to open to the sky, with figures leaning over a balustrade and looking down at the viewer below.
The Baroque period was the golden age of trompe l'oeil. Ceiling paintings in churches and palaces across Europe used the technique to dissolve architectural boundaries and open the ceiling to heaven. A 2024 book chapter published by Routledge examined how Rococo decorative art engaged with trompe l'oeil, analyzing paintings by Jean-Honore Fragonard and Jean-Etienne Liotard, the architecture of the Wieskirche, and ornamental prints by Franz Xaver Habermann. The research argues that Rococo trompe l'oeil was not just decorative trickery but a self-conscious meta-style that questioned the boundaries between artifice and nature. Read more at Routledge.
A 2024 doctoral dissertation from KU Leuven examined trompe l'oeil as a "source of painterly reflection," arguing that the technique developed in the 17th century into one of the first self-critical pictorial strategies. The research positions trompe l'oeil as a method for examining the relationship between fiction and reality, and connects the historical genre to contemporary artistic practice. Mantegna's Camera degli Sposi in the Ducal Palace of Mantua is the first major trompe l'oeil ceiling in Western art. The painted oculus appears to open to the sky, with court figures leaning over a balustrade. The perspective is calculated for a viewer standing directly below, and the illusion of depth is convincing enough that the ceiling appears to dissolve.
Van Hoogstraten, a student of Rembrandt, created some of the most accomplished trompe l'oeil paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. His View of an Interior (c. 1662, Dyrham Park, National Trust) shows a hallway with doors, paintings, and a dog, all painted with such precision that viewers reportedly tried to walk into the space. Van Hoogstraten also wrote extensively on the theory of painting, and his treatise Inleyding tot de Hooge Schoole der Schilderkonst (1678) discusses trompe l'oeil as a test of the painter's skill.
Borrell was a Spanish Catalan painter who made trompe l'oeil his specialty. Escaping Criticism (1874, Banco de Espana, Madrid) is his most famous work, depicting a boy climbing out of a painted frame. The painting takes the logic of trompe l'oeil further than traditional examples: instead of a static object appearing real, a figure actively transgresses the boundary between painted and real space. Borrell produced at least two additional versions of the composition with variations.
Peto was an American painter who specialized in trompe l'oeil still lifes. His The Old Rack (c. 1901, Philadelphia Museum of Art) shows a wooden rack holding letters, photographs, and objects, all painted with exacting fidelity to the actual surface of the canvas. Peto's work was largely ignored during his lifetime and only recognized in the mid-20th century, when his paintings were sometimes mistaken for those of the more commercially successful William Harnett.
Hughes creates "reverse perspective" trompe l'oeil paintings that are physically three-dimensional. His works are painted in relief on protruding forms, but the parts that stick out toward the viewer are painted as though they are far away. When the viewer moves, the painted space appears to shift in the opposite direction, creating a disorienting effect. The telltale sign is a moment of doubt. If you find yourself unsure whether an object is painted or real, you are looking at trompe l'oeil. The technique is most convincing when the painting is viewed from the specific angle the artist calculated for. Move to the side and the illusion usually breaks, because the perspective distorts.
Look for objects that appear to project beyond the picture plane. In trompe l'oeil paintings, letters, knives, curtains, and frames often seem to hang over the edge of the canvas. Look for cast shadows that fall in the same direction as the actual light in the room where the painting hangs. And look for painted frames or ledges that create a threshold between the painted space and the viewer's space. This threshold is where the illusion operates.
In the Banco de Espana in Madrid, Borrell's Escaping Criticism is displayed with an actual frame that continues the style of the painted one, enhancing the illusion. In the National Gallery in London, Murillo's Self-Portrait (c. 1670) uses a painted frame within the painting to create a similar effect, with the artist's hand appearing to break the picture plane.
Trompe l'oeil overlaps with several other terms in this glossary. Anamorphosis is a related form of visual deception, but where trompe l'oeil aims to make the painting invisible as a painting, anamorphosis aims to make the image invisible until viewed from a specific angle. Grisaille sometimes functions as trompe l'oeil when it is used to simulate stone sculpture. Chiaroscuro provides the tonal modelling that makes trompe l'oeil convincing, especially in the cast shadows that anchor objects in real space.
