Just a seamless flow of related color that feels calm and unified. Nature uses analogous color schemes constantly, and painters who want to create harmony in their work borrow the same principle.
Analogous colors are groups of hues that sit next to each other on the color wheel. Red, red-orange, and orange are analogous. Blue, blue-green, and green are analogous. A typical analogous scheme uses three adjacent hues, though it can extend to four or five. Because the colors share a common pigment, they blend naturally and create a sense of visual unity. Analogous schemes can be warm or cool. A warm analogous scheme might use red, red-orange, orange, and yellow-orange. A cool analogous scheme might use blue, blue-green, green, and yellow-green. Because analogous colors lack the contrast of complementary pairs, artists must create contrast through other means. Value contrast is the most common method: using light and dark versions of the same hues to create focal points and spatial depth. Saturation contrast is another: placing a highly saturated version of a hue next to a desaturated version. Without value or saturation contrast, an analogous scheme can become flat and monotonous.
Analogous color schemes appear throughout art history, but they became a deliberate strategy with the Impressionists. Claude Monet (1840-1926) used analogous colors systematically in his Water Lilies series (1896-1926). Select a dominant hue from the color wheel. Then choose one or two adjacent hues as supporting colors. The dominant hue should occupy about 60 percent of the composition, the supporting hue about 30 percent, and the accent hue about 10 percent. This ratio, sometimes called the 60-30-10 rule, ensures that the analogous scheme reads as unified rather than chaotic.
Because analogous colors lack the contrast of complementary pairs, you need to create contrast through value and saturation. Use light tints and dark shades of your analogous hues to create focal points. Place the most saturated version of your dominant hue where you want the viewer to look. Use desaturated versions for backgrounds and supporting areas.
A useful exercise is to paint the same subject three times, each time with a different analogous scheme. Paint a landscape with a warm analogous scheme (yellows, oranges, reds). Then paint it with a cool analogous scheme (blues, blue-greens, greens). Then paint it with a scheme that bridges warm and cool (yellow-greens, greens, blue-greens). The same subject will feel completely different in each version, demonstrating how analogous color schemes control mood and atmosphere.
