How to Spot Camaieu in a Painting

If you see a painting that is entirely in one color, not gray, you are looking at camaieu. The most common colors are blue, green, and red. The painting will look like a sculptural relief, with form modelled by light and shadow within a single hue. The effect is similar to grisaille, but the choice of a non-gray color gives the work a different character. Blue camaieu suggests lapis lazuli or sapphire. Green camaieu suggests bronze or jade. Red camaieu suggests terracotta or coral.
