In September 1987, a sculptor named Suzie Moncrieff organized a small event in Nelson, a town on the South Island of New Zealand. By 2025, the World of WearableArt (WOW) show had become an annual spectacle in Wellington drawing over 60,000 ticket holders, with designers submitting works made from bike helmets, mattresses, recycled plastics, fibreglass, 3D-printed components, and moulded leather. Designers work with natural fibres, metal, recycled plastics, fibreglass, wood, paper, found objects, silicone, resin, and 3D-printed components. Wearable art is not the same as avant-garde fashion, though the two overlap. Designers like Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake, and Yohji Yamamoto, working in Japan in the 1970s and 1980s, transformed garments into conceptual and sculptural forms as part of what scholars have called an "anti-fashion" movement. Their work is sometimes classified as wearable art and sometimes as fashion, depending on context. Origins and History
Arts and Crafts Precursors (1850s-1930s)
The wearable art movement inherits from the Arts and Crafts movement of the mid-19th century, which sought to integrate art into everyday life and objects. Carefully handmade clothing was considered a device for self-articulation and a strategy to resist the disempowerment of makers by large-scale manufacturing. In the early 20th century, Mario Fortuny y Madrazo created Renaissance-inspired printed velvet gowns and a pleated silk dress called the Delphos, patented in 1909. Fortuny dresses became synonymous with simplicity and elegance and were favored by artistic and intellectual circles.
Bauhaus and Fiber Art (1930s-1960s)
In the 1930s, a renewed interest in handweaving in America was accelerated by the arrival of Bauhaus-trained European emigres. Anni Albers taught weaving at Black Mountain College from 1938 and chaired the craft department at the California College of Arts and Crafts from 1960 to 1976. A generation later, her students pushed textile arts into radical off-loom woven sculptures of the late 1950s. The Art to Wear Movement (1960s-1970s)
The wearable art movement emerged at the close of the 1960s and flowered in the 1970s, fueled by hippie and mod subcultures and alongside craftivism, fiber arts, and feminist art. Artists identifying with this movement were overwhelmingly women. The term "wearable art" emerged around 1975 to distinguish artworks made to be worn from body art and performance. The movement was primarily based in the United States due to a combination of financial and educational support.
Art schools were essential to the development of the Art to Wear movement. In the late 1960s, a group of students at Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Pratt Institute began integrating textile techniques in their design projects. The best known galleries supporting wearable art were Obiko, founded in 1972 by Sandra Sakata in San Francisco, and Julie: Artisans' Gallery, founded in 1973 by Julie Schafler-Dale in New York.
Experimental Jewellery and Conceptual Clothing (1980s)
The 1980s saw a radical shift in experimental jewellery that came to be called the "New Jewellery" movement. Jewellers began investigating jewellery's relationship to the body and clothing, leading some to performance-based work and what came to be described as "wearables." One of the most influential galleries showing experimental jewellery and wearables was Galerie Ra in Amsterdam, started by jeweller Paul Derez. Key jewellery artists pioneering this shift included Susanna Heron, Caroline Broadhead, and Julia Manheim. Key Artists and Practitioners
Anni Albers (1899-1994)
Albers was a Bauhaus-trained weaver whose teaching at Black Mountain College and the California College of Arts and Crafts laid the educational foundation for the fiber art and wearable art movements in America. Her work elevated weaving from a craft to a fine art and influenced generations of textile artists who followed.
Jean Cacicedo (b. 1945)
Cacicedo was among the students at Cranbrook Academy of Art in the late 1960s who began integrating textile techniques into design projects. She became one of the major figures of the Art to Wear movement, known for hand-dyed and felted wool garments that combined sculptural form with wearable function.
Marian Clayden (1933-2015)
Clayden was a British-born textile artist who became a central figure in American wearable art. Caroline Broadhead (b. 1945)

She described her interest as "using the characteristic scale proportions and features of garments and the familiarity of these to make clothing forms that express movements, aspirations, dilemmas, states."
Issey Miyake (1938-2022)
Miyake's work in the 1980s and 1990s transformed garments into sculptural forms. His Pleats Please line, launched in 1988, used a heat-press technique to create permanently pleated polyester garments that could be compressed, stretched, and sculpted on the body. Miyake's work sits at the boundary between fashion and wearable art, and scholars have described his practice as part of an "anti-fashion" movement that treated garments as conceptual objects.
Tatiana Sheverda
A contemporary WOW designer, Sheverda has crafted wearable artworks from bike helmets, mattresses, and bottle atomisers. She describes her approach: "I try to do every piece with a different material, not repeating the materials I want to explore. I have a short life, and I want to try so many things." Her practice exemplifies the material experimentation that defines contemporary wearable art.
Wearable art is related to textile art and fiber art, the broader practices from which it emerged.
