Touch a woven tapestry and you are touching an image that is also a structure. The picture is not applied to the surface. It is the surface. Every color you see is a thread that passes over and under other threads, and if you pull one out, the image unravels. This is the fundamental difference between textile art and painting. A painting is an image on a substrate. A textile is an image that is its own substrate, where form and material are inseparable. That inseparability is what makes textile art a distinct discipline, and it is what has made the medium so resistant to categorization within the traditional hierarchy of fine arts.
Textile art is the creation of art objects using fibers, yarns, and fabrics as the primary medium. The field encompasses weaving, tapestry, embroidery, quilting, felting, knitting, crochet, lace-making, and constructed textile sculpture. The terms "textile art" and "fiber art" are often used interchangeably, though some scholars distinguish them: textile art typically works with traditional materials (woven fabrics, yarns, natural fibers), while fiber art incorporates synthetic fibers, plastics, metal wire, and industrial components. Both share a history of marginalization within the art world, associated with domestic labor, craft traditions, and women's work, and both have gained significant institutional recognition since the 2010s.

Textile art begins with fiber. Fibers are spun into yarn, yarn is woven into fabric, and fabric is assembled, embellished, or manipulated into art. The basic processes are ancient and have changed little in principle, though the range of available materials has expanded enormously.
Weaving is the interlacing of two sets of yarns at right angles: the warp (vertical threads held under tension on a loom) and the weft (horizontal threads passed over and under the warp). Every woven fabric, from plain muslin to complex Jacquard tapestry, is built from this structure. The loom controls the sequence of warp threads raised and lowered, determining the pattern. A plain weave alternates over-and-under in a simple checkerboard. A twill weave offsets the pattern to create diagonal lines. A satin weave floats weft threads over multiple warp threads for a smooth surface. Tapestry is a specific weaving technique in which the weft threads are discontinuous: the weaver uses different colored weft threads in different sections of the warp, building the image as the weaving progresses.
Tapestry differs from other weaving in that the image is created by the weaver, not applied to a finished fabric. In a tapestry, the weft threads do not span the full width of the loom. They are worked in sections, with different colors interlocking where they meet. This allows for pictorial composition, but it also means that the weaver must translate a design into thread in real time, making decisions about color blending, edge definition, and texture as the work grows. A large tapestry can take months or years to complete.
Beyond weaving, textile art includes quilting (stitching layers of fabric together, often with decorative patterning), felting (matting fibers together through moisture, heat, and pressure), knitting and crochet (interlocking loops of yarn), and constructed textile sculpture, where fabric is cut, shaped, and assembled into three-dimensional forms.
The earliest textiles date to the Neolithic period, with woven fragments found in Catalhoyuk in Turkey dating to around 7,000 BCE. The earliest surviving tapestry fragments come from ancient Egypt, dating to around 3,000 BCE. The technique spread across the Mediterranean and into Europe, where medieval tapestry reached extraordinary technical and artistic heights.
The Bayeux Tapestry (actually embroidery, not woven tapestry) was produced in the 1070s and depicts the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. At 70 meters long, it is one of the largest narrative textiles in existence. The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries (c. 1500, Musee de Cluny, Paris) are among the finest surviving medieval tapestries, woven in the millefleur style with a background of small flowers.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Gobelins and Beauvais manufactories in France produced tapestries for the French court, translating paintings by Raphael, Rubens, and Boucher into woven form. These works required enormous skill and labor: a single large Gobelins tapestry could take four weavers two to three years to complete.
The 19th century Arts and Crafts movement, led by William Morris, revived tapestry as an artistic practice in reaction against industrial production. Morris established the Merton Abbey workshops in 1881, where tapestries were woven by hand using traditional techniques. The Arts and Crafts movement repositioned textile work as art rather than industry, though it remained within the craft category.
The Bauhaus school (1919-1933) brought textile art into the modernist conversation. Anni Albers, who enrolled at the Bauhaus in 1922 and joined the weaving workshop, transformed textile design from a craft into a medium for abstract art. Albers's wall hangings from the 1920s and 1930s use geometric patterns and experimental materials (cellophane, metallic yarn) to create works that function as both functional textiles and abstract compositions. After fleeing Nazi Germany for the United States in 1933, Albers taught at Black Mountain College and continued to produce work that argued for textile as a fine art medium equal to painting or sculpture.
The 1960s and 1970s saw the emergence of the fiber art movement, which pushed textile art off the wall and into three-dimensional space. The Lausanne Tapestry Biennial, founded by Jean Lurcat in 1962, became the international platform for this movement. Over its thirty-year run (1962-1995), the Biennial shifted textile art from flat tapestry to suspended, free-hanging, and sculptural fiber works. Artists like Magdalena Abakanowicz produced enormous woven forms that hung from ceilings and filled rooms, challenging the distinction between textile and sculpture.
The feminist art movement of the 1970s reclaimed textile techniques as a deliberate artistic strategy. Miriam Schapiro coined the term "femmage" to describe works that combined fabric, embroidery, and collage in a feminist context. Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party (1974-1979) used embroidery and textile techniques to create a monumental work honoring women in history.
Albers was the first textile artist to be given a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, in 1949. Her wall hangings, pictorial weavings, and printed fabrics argue that textile is a medium for abstract art on equal terms with painting. Albers's 1965 book On Weaving remains the foundational text on textile as art. Her work is held at MoMA, the Tate, and the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
Abakanowicz created enormous woven sculptures called "Abakans" in the 1960s and 1970s: suspended, free-hanging fiber forms that filled gallery spaces and defied categorization as either textile or sculpture. Her later work, including the Backs series (1976-1982), used burlap and resin to create rows of headless seated figures, bringing textile techniques to bear on themes of mass humanity and political oppression.
Hicks works across scales from small woven studies to monumental architectural installations. Her work combines traditional weaving and knotting with experimental materials including synthetic fibers, rubber, and found objects. Hicks's installations at the 2017 Venice Biennale and in the Met's contemporary galleries demonstrate textile art's capacity to engage architectural space.
Mattai, born in Guyana and now based in Los Angeles, uses found textiles including saris and clothing to create large-scale woven assemblages that address migration, indentured labor, and Indo-Caribbean identity. Her work represents a contemporary generation of artists using textile to engage with postcolonial and diasporic experience. A 2025 thesis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill examines Mattai's practice alongside other Caribbean artists using textile as "a site for the exploration of place, identity, and empire." Boyd's tapestry series, based on his St Francis pastel drawings, was woven by Portuguese weavers who worked from small photographic transparencies, never seeing the originals. The 20 tapestries, each measuring 2.5 by 3.4 metres, required approximately 4.5 million handwoven stitches and took two years to complete. Textile art has gained significant institutional recognition in recent years. A 2024 article in the New York Times by Julia Halperin declared: "Fiber Art Is Finally Being Taken Seriously. Long caught in the liminal space between craft and something more prestigious, works of thread and fabric are reaching newfound institutional recognition." A 2025 thesis from Stockholm University traces this shift, identifying the 1920s and 1970s as previous periods of heightened interest in weaving and arguing that the current moment represents a broader institutional acceptance.
