Wax: The Sculptor's Modeling Material and Casting Intermediate

Wax is a modeling material and casting intermediate used in sculpture since ancient Greece. From lost-wax casting to anatomical models to death masks, wax has shaped art for 2,500 years.

Pliny the Elder tells a story about a Greek sculptor named Lysistratus of Sicyon, who lived in the fourth century BCE. According to Pliny, Lysistratus was the first person to make a plaster cast of a living human face. He poured plaster over the subject's face, let it set, removed it, and then poured wax into the plaster mold. The result was a wax portrait that he could refine by hand, correcting the imperfections that a direct cast would preserve. Whether or not Pliny's story is accurate, it establishes wax as a material that sits between life and art. Wax can be molded from life, cast in multiples, carved, smoothed, and reshaped. It is the most responsive sculptural material there is, and it has been used for modeling, casting, and finished sculpture for over 2,500 years.

Wax is a pliable, thermoplastic material used in sculpture for modeling, casting, and as an intermediate step in the production of bronze and other metal sculptures. The primary wax used historically is beeswax, though other waxes, including carnauba, paraffin, and microcrystalline waxes, are used in modern practice. Wax can be softened by heat, shaped by hand or tools, and hardened by cooling. It is the key material in lost-wax casting (cire perdue), where a wax model is encased in a mold and melted out to leave a cavity for molten metal. Wax has also been used for finished sculpture, anatomical models, death masks, and portrait effigies.

What Is Wax and How Does It Work in Sculpture?

The wax used in sculpture is primarily beeswax, a natural substance produced by honeybees. Beeswax is a complex mixture of esters, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons that melts at around 62 to 65 degrees Celsius. It is thermoplastic, meaning it softens when heated and hardens when cooled, and this cycle can be repeated indefinitely. This property makes wax ideal for modeling: the sculptor can warm a piece of wax in the hands or over a flame, shape it, let it cool to a hard state, and then re-warm it to make corrections.

Beeswax can be modified with additives to change its working properties. Resin is added to increase hardness and raise the melting point. Oils are added to increase plasticity. Pigments are added to color the wax, which is important for anatomical models and finished wax sculpture. A 2023 study published in Studies in Conservation examined the construction materials of clothed wax effigies, noting that wax "is easy to find, has a reasonable price, has good workability, can be modelled, cast, carved and sculpted, permits corrections at any stage, has a naturally convincing colour, can be mixed with hardeners, plasticisers, solvents and pigments, takes paint very well, and can depict human skin better than most materials." In lost-wax casting, wax serves as the sacrificial model. The sculptor models the figure in wax, or a wax copy is made from a mold of an original model. The wax is then encased in a heat-resistant material, usually clay or investment plaster. The mold is heated, the wax melts and drains out, and molten metal is poured into the resulting cavity. The wax is "lost" in the process, but it has served its purpose: it captured the sculptor's exact form and transferred it to the metal.

History of Wax in Sculpture

Ancient Greece and Rome

The use of wax in sculpture dates to ancient Greece. Children in ancient Greece and Rome played with wax dolls, and the model-casting skills of ancient Greeks, who employed the lost-wax technique, suggest that wax was a common material in sculptors' workshops. Pliny attributes the invention of wax portraiture to Lysistratus of Sicyon, who created plaster molds of living faces and poured wax into them to produce portraits.

The Romans used wax for death masks. Patrician families kept masks of their ancestors, made from wax casts of the deceased's face, and displayed them in household shrines. These masks were carried in funeral processions, where actors wearing the masks impersonated the ancestors. The practice gave wax a specific cultural function: it was the material that preserved the likeness of the dead.

Medieval and Renaissance

During the medieval period, wax was used for devotional objects, votive offerings, and seals. Statues of saints, miniature portraits, and dolls were made from wax. The practice of offering wax votives at shrines, representing body parts or whole figures in thanks for healing, continued throughout the medieval and early modern periods.

From the sixteenth century onward, wax portraiture became a refined art form. Framed relief wax portraits, busts, and life-sized effigies were produced for royal and aristocratic patrons. French court artist Antoine Benoist (1632-1717) was commissioned by King Louis XIV to produce forty-three wax effigies known as Le Cercle Royal, exhibited for a fee throughout France since 1668. King James II invited Benoist to England in 1684 to create similar effigies.

Anatomical Models and the Seventeenth Century

Wax modeling gained status as an art form in the fifteenth century and was perfected in Florence in the seventeenth century. Toward the end of that century, artists and anatomists collaborated to produce accurate wax models for teaching anatomy. Gaetano Giulio Zummo (1656-1701), known as Zumbo, collaborated with surgeon Guillaume Desnoues to create anatomical wax models in Bologna and Florence. The Clemente Susini workshop in Florence produced over 2,000 wax models of anatomy, zoology, and botany for the Natural History Museum in Florence, working under the supervision of anatomists.

Lost-Wax Casting and Bronze Sculpture

Wax is the indispensable intermediate material in lost-wax casting, the primary method for casting bronze sculpture. Every bronze sculpture produced by lost-wax casting began as a wax model, whether directly modeled by the sculptor or produced from a mold of an original in another material. The earliest known lost-wax castings, from the Nahal Mishmar hoard (c. 3700 BCE) and Mehrgarh (c. 4000 BCE), used wax models that were encased in clay and melted out. A study of organic residues in Roman-era molds from Moravia (Czech Republic) found ozokerite wax (earth wax) in the molds, confirming the production of wax models as an intermediate stage for lost-wax casting. Key Artists and Traditions

Lysistratus of Sicyon (4th century BCE)

According to Pliny, Lysistratus invented the technique of making plaster casts from living faces and pouring wax into them to produce portraits. This technique, combining plaster molding with wax casting, established a method of portraiture that would be used for over 2,000 years, from Roman death masks to Renaissance portrait busts.

Gaetano Giulio Zummo (1656-1701)

Zummo, known as Zumbo, was the Italian abbot who pioneered anatomical wax modeling. Working in Bologna and Florence, he collaborated with the surgeon Guillaume Desnoues to create detailed wax models of human anatomy that were used for medical education. Zummo's models are among the earliest surviving examples of wax as a finished sculptural medium, and they demonstrate the material's ability to render human tissue with a realism that no other material could match.

Antoine Benoist (1632-1717)

Benoist, court artist to Louis XIV, produced forty-three wax effigies of French court figures known as Le Cercle Royal. The effigies were exhibited publicly, making wax portraiture a form of popular entertainment as well as a court art. Benoist's work demonstrates the use of wax for life-size figural sculpture, a tradition that continued in the wax museums of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Renaissance and Baroque Bronze Sculptors

Every Renaissance bronze sculptor, from Donatello to Cellini to Giambologna, used wax as the modeling material for lost-wax casting. Cellini's account of casting the Perseus (c. 1554) describes working with the wax model, encasing it in clay, and melting the wax out before pouring the bronze. The wax model was the direct expression of the sculptor's hand, and every detail the sculptor pressed into the wax was transferred to the bronze.

Wax is the key material in lost-wax casting, the primary method for casting bronze sculpture.
