Look at a painting by Jan van Eyck and you see surfaces built from dozens of thin, transparent layers, each one applied only after the previous had dried completely. The result is a depth and luminosity that no single layer could produce. Van Eyck could not have painted this way wet-on-wet. He needed each layer to dry so the next could sit on top without disturbing what was underneath. This is wet-on-dry painting, and it is the foundation of the layered approach that dominated European oil painting from the 15th century through the 19th century.
Wet-on-dry is the application of fresh paint onto a surface where the previous layer has fully dried. Because the underlying paint is solid, the new layer does not blend with it. The boundary between layers is sharp and distinct. The painter can build up color, adjust value, and add detail with precision, knowing that each stroke will stay exactly where it is placed. The technique works in both oil and acrylic, though the drying times differ dramatically between the two media.

What Is Wet-on-Dry and How Does It Work?
When paint dries, it forms a solid film. In oil paint, this happens through oxidative cross-linking of the drying oil binder. In acrylic paint, it happens through evaporation of water and coalescence of polymer particles into a continuous plastic film. In both cases, once the film is dry, new paint applied on top will not intermix with it. The new layer adheres to the surface of the old layer but remains a separate stratum.
This separation is what makes wet-on-dry useful. A painter can apply a transparent glaze over a dried opaque underlayer and the glaze will modify the color of what is beneath without blending into it. A painter can add fine details over a dried base coat and the details will stay crisp. A painter can correct or adjust one area without disturbing adjacent areas that have already dried. The technique gives control that wet-on-wet cannot provide.
The drying time determines the pace of work. Oil paint dries in days to weeks, which means a wet-on-dry oil painting is a slow, multi-session process. Acrylic paint dries in minutes to hours, which means an acrylic painter can layer wet-on-dry within a single session, building up layers rapidly. This speed difference is one reason acrylic became popular in the mid-20th century. It offered the layering capability of oil without the long waiting periods.
However, the combination of oil and acrylic in the same painting raises conservation concerns. A 2025 study published in npj Heritage Science investigated the interface between oil paint films and acrylic-based grounds in contemporary paintings, finding that degradation phenomena including wrinkles, protrusions, and cracks can form at the boundary between the two media. The research used multiband imaging and electron microscopy to document these failures at their earliest stages, before they become visible to the naked eye. Oil Over Acrylic: A Practical and Conservation Challenge
Many contemporary painters work oil over acrylic grounds, a practice that has been common since the 1960s. Acrylic gesso dries fast, creates a flexible surface, and is convenient. Oil paint adheres to it and can be layered wet-on-dry on top. But the interaction between the two media is not simple.
In 2022, Golden Artist Colors revised their recommendations for applying oil paints over acrylic mediums after research demonstrated that certain oil paint colors crack when layered thinly over glossy acrylic surfaces. A study from Queen's University investigated this phenomenon, finding that oil paints lose components of their drying oil to the acrylic underlayer prior to the initial stage of curing. Chemical analysis showed that paint samples exhibiting cracking have minor relative amounts of oleic acid, meaning a rigid paint film sits atop a softer, gummier acrylic surface. This does not mean oil over acrylic is inherently doomed. It means that the surface texture and absorbency of the acrylic layer matter. Matte acrylic surfaces, which are more porous and less glossy, provide better adhesion for oil paint than glossy ones. Origins and History
Wet-on-dry painting is as old as oil painting itself. The Early Netherlandish painters who developed oil painting in the 15th century used a layered approach in which each glaze was applied over a dried previous layer. This was not a stylistic choice but a technical necessity. The luminous, jewel-like surfaces of Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece (1432) and The Arnolfini Portrait (1434, National Gallery, London) are built from dozens of thin, transparent layers, each one dried before the next was applied.
The Italian Renaissance adopted the same approach. Leonardo da Vinci used wet-on-dry layering to build the sfumato transitions in the Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519, Louvre). Each glaze, some no more than 2 to 5 micrometers thick, was applied over a dried base layer. A 2010 study by the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musees de France used X-ray fluorescence to analyze seven Leonardo paintings, confirming that his technique relied on thin glazes of umber over a base of approximately 1% vermilion and 99% lead white, applied in successive dried layers. Academic painters built up their works in stages: underpainting, dead coloring, glazing, and final details, each layer dried before the next began. The Impressionists challenged this model by working wet-on-wet in single sessions, but wet-on-dry never disappeared. Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441)
Van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait (1434, National Gallery, London) is a textbook example of wet-on-dry layering. The green of the woman's dress is built from layers of lead-tin yellow, blue, and translucent green glazes, each applied over dried previous layers. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
Leonardo's sfumato technique depends entirely on wet-on-dry layering. The Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519, Louvre) is built from dozens of microscopically thin glazes, each dried before the next was applied. The edgeless transitions that define sfumato are the cumulative optical effect of these stacked layers.
Titian (c. 1488-1576)
Titian used both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry, often in the same painting. His Venus of Urbino (1538, Uffizi, Florence) shows wet-on-dry glazing in the rich reds and greens of the fabrics, built up in layers over dried underpainting, combined with wet-on-wet blending in the flesh.
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Rembrandt's layered approach combined wet-on-dry glazing with impasto applied wet-on-wet in the highlights. In The Jewish Bride (1665, Rijksmuseum), the gold sleeve is built up in dried glaze layers with thick impasto highlights applied on top. The combination of techniques in a single passage is part of what makes Rembrandt's surfaces so complex.
Willem de Kooning (1904-1997)
De Kooning used wet-on-dry layering in his Woman series (1950-1953), scraping back and repainting over dried layers to build up surfaces that show the history of their own making. The visible traces of earlier layers, partially covered by later ones, are a feature of his approach.
How to Spot Wet-on-Dry in a Painting
Look for sharp boundaries between paint layers. If you can see that a detail has been added on top of a dried base, with no blending at the boundary, you are looking at wet-on-dry application. This is most visible in glazed passages, where a transparent colored layer sits over an opaque one and modifies its color without mixing into it.
In Van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait at the National Gallery in London, look at the mirror on the back wall. The surrounding green fabric is built from layered glazes, each distinct from the next. In Leonardo's Virgin of the Rocks at the same museum, the shadowed areas show the cumulative effect of many dried glaze layers, producing a depth that a single layer of paint could not achieve.
In acrylic paintings, wet-on-dry layering is often visible as hard-edged color changes. Because acrylic dries so fast, painters can build up many layers in a single session, and the boundaries between them are typically crisp. Look at the work of David Hockney, who uses acrylic's fast drying time to layer colors with sharp, defined edges.
Wet-on-dry is the counterpart to wet-on-wet, where paint is applied onto a still-wet surface for blending. Glazing is the most common application of wet-on-dry, using thin transparent layers to modify color and build depth. Alla prima painting typically avoids wet-on-dry, since it aims to complete the painting in one session while the paint is still wet.
