Vanitas is a type of still life painting that symbolizes the transience of life and the vanity of earthly pursuits. The word comes from Latin, meaning "emptiness" or "vanity," and refers to a passage in the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament: "Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities: all is vanity" (Ecclesiastes 1:2). Vanitas paintings flourished in the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries, then spread to other European nations. They assemble symbolic objects into compositions designed to be examined, discussed, and interpreted as moral warnings about the brevity of life and the worthlessness of material achievement.

Vanitas is a subgenre of still life painting. A still life typically presents objects in a composition to be admired for the artist's skill in rendering different materials and textures. A vanitas still life disrupts that admiration by introducing objects that carry a moral message: life is short, luxury is worthless, and death is inevitable. The National Gallery describes the genre as "a type of still life that holds a moral message" in which "life is short, and luxury and greed are worthless in the face of inevitable death."
The symbolic vocabulary of vanitas paintings is remarkably consistent across artists and decades. Skulls represent death. Hourglasses and watches represent the passage of time. Extinguished candles and smoking lamps represent the sudden end of life. Wilting flowers and rotting fruit represent decay. Soap bubbles represent the fragility and brevity of existence. Musical instruments represent the ephemeral pleasures of the senses. Books represent the futility of intellectual endeavor. Coins, jewelry, and luxury goods represent the vanity of wealth. Seashells, often exotic and expensive, represent both luxury and the life that once occupied the shell and is now gone.
Not every vanitas painting includes all of these objects. Some are dense with symbolism, others are stripped to a few elements. The consistency lies not in the specific objects chosen but in the moral message they collectively convey.
Vanitas painting emerged in the Netherlands during a period of extraordinary material prosperity. The Dutch Republic in the 17th century was the wealthiest nation in Europe, with a booming economy built on trade, finance, and colonial expansion. Dutch citizens filled their homes with paintings, furniture, exotic goods, and collectibles. The tension between this material abundance and the Calvinist Christian piety that also characterized Dutch culture created a demand for art that acknowledged both. Vanitas paintings were the solution: they allowed collectors to display their wealth and their piety simultaneously.
The National Gallery notes that "the tension between material prosperity and Christian piety, both of which were valued and respected in seventeenth-century Holland, was considered something to be remembered and reflected on, rather than avoided." A vanitas painting on a dining room wall was not a contradiction. It was a meditation. The collector who owned expensive objects could also own a painting that said those objects were ultimately meaningless.
The earliest known independent vanitas still life is Jacques de Gheyn II's Vanitas Still Life (1603), now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met describes it as "generally considered to be the earliest known independent still-life painting of a vanitas subject." The painting includes a skull, a large bubble, cut flowers, and a smoking urn. Images floating in the bubble, such as a wheel of torture and a leper's rattle, refer to human folly. De Gheyn's Vanitas Still Life (1603) is the starting point of the genre. It established the vocabulary: skull, bubble, flowers, urn, and philosophical references. The painting is also technically remarkable for its early date. Independent still life paintings, unconnected to a religious or narrative context, were still a novelty in 1603. De Gheyn was painting at the moment when still life was becoming an independent genre, and he chose to make its first major statement a meditation on death.
Steenwyck's Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanities of Human Life (c. 1640) at the National Gallery in London is a defining work of the genre. The composition is built on a diagonal: objects crowd the lower side while the upper side is empty space, cut through by the shaft of light. The National Gallery describes how "the contrast between material riches and emptiness couldn't be clearer." X-ray images reveal that Steenwyck originally painted a bust of a Roman emperor, a symbol of earthly power, but replaced it with a flask, perhaps because the bust drew attention away from the skull.
Treck's Vanitas Still Life at the National Gallery is a more complex and unsettling example. The painting includes costly objects (musical instruments, a lacquer box, a Rhenish jug, a silk scarf with gold and silver thread) alongside memento mori symbols (skull, overturned hourglass, bubble-blowing straw, spent pipe). The objects are arranged precariously, some tipping off the shelf. The National Gallery notes that "there is nothing tranquil here" and that the painting "drives home the point that while the actors, the artists, the poets and the music makers may one day die, the arts and Treck's painting will endure." Claesz, working in Haarlem, painted vanitas still lifes throughout his career. His Vanitas Still Life with the Spinario at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of his most complex works. It includes a plaster cast of the Spinario (a famous antique sculpture of a boy extracting a thorn from his foot), a skull with bones, books, a watch, a snuffed oil lamp, a painter's palette with brushes, musical instruments, and armor. Van Oosterwijck was one of the few women painters working in the vanitas genre. Her Vanitas Still Life (1668) is a meticulously composed meditation on mortality, featuring a skull, flowers, and an open Bible. She worked in Delft and Amsterdam and achieved considerable recognition during her lifetime, with collectors including European royalty.
Gijsbrechts, a Flemish-born painter, pushed the vanitas genre into trompe l'oeil territory. His Vanitas Still Life at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, includes a skull, hourglass, candle, soap bubble, and violin, but also features the top right corner of the canvas painted as if it has come loose from its support. The MFA notes that "by painting the top right corner of the canvas as if it had come loose from its support, he demonstrated that even the painter's canvas, which may appear to arrest time, is fragile and impermanent." Vanitas is a specific subgenre of still life painting and the most developed expression of the memento mori tradition in visual art. It flourished during the Dutch Golden Age, the period of greatest still life production. The genre connects to iconography as the study of symbolic meaning in art, since vanitas paintings are essentially iconographic puzzles to be decoded.
