A lily in a painting is never just a lily. In a medieval Annunciation scene, it stands for the purity of the Virgin Mary. A skull on a desk is never just a skull. In a Dutch vanitas still life, it stands for the transience of all earthly things. A dog at a woman's feet is never just a dog. In a Renaissance marriage portrait, it stands for fidelity. Every object, gesture, color, and position in a painting can carry meaning beyond its literal appearance, and the discipline that decodes this meaning is called iconography.
Iconography is the study of the subject matter and symbols in visual art. It identifies what is depicted and explains what those depictions mean. The word comes from the Greek "eikon" (image) and "graphein" (to write). Iconography is literally writing about images: reading the visual language that artists use to communicate ideas, stories, and beliefs. It is one of the oldest methods of art historical analysis, and it remains one of the most useful tools for understanding paintings that are dense with symbolic meaning.

Iconography is the systematic identification and interpretation of visual symbols in art. It operates on three levels, as defined by the German art historian Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968). The first level is pre-iconographic description: identifying the visible forms. You see a woman, a winged figure, a lily, a book. The second level is iconographic analysis: identifying the story or concept. The woman is the Virgin Mary, the winged figure is the Archangel Gabriel, the lily symbolizes purity, the book symbolizes wisdom. This is the Annunciation, the moment when Gabriel tells Mary she will bear the Christ child. The third level is iconological interpretation: understanding the deeper cultural meaning. The painting reflects medieval theology, the cult of the Virgin, and the social role of religious art in 15th-century Flanders.
These three levels, published by Panofsky in Studies in Iconology (1939), remain the standard framework for iconographic analysis. The first level requires only visual recognition. The second requires knowledge of texts, stories, and symbolic conventions. The third requires knowledge of the cultural and historical context in which the work was made.
The systematic study of symbols in art is as old as art itself. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs are a symbolic system in which images carry specific meanings. Medieval manuscript illumination relies on a dense network of religious symbols that viewers were expected to decode. But iconography as a formal academic discipline emerged in the 19th century, when art historians began to catalog and classify the recurring symbols in Christian art.
The French archaeologist Adolphe Napoleon Didron (1808-1867) published Christian Iconography in 1843, a systematic catalog of the symbols, attributes, and conventions used to depict saints, angels, and biblical figures. Didron's work established the idea that religious art follows a codified visual language that can be studied and decoded.
The German scholar Aby Warburg (1866-1929) expanded iconography beyond Christian art to include classical mythology, astrology, and the survival of pagan symbols in Renaissance art. Warburg's famous 1893 dissertation on Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus (c. 1485) and Primavera (c. 1480s) argued that these paintings are not just decorative mythological scenes but carry specific meanings rooted in Renaissance Neoplatonism and the revival of classical imagery. Warburg's approach, which he called "iconology," focused on the survival and transformation of symbols across centuries.
Erwin Panofsky formalized the discipline with his three-level system, published in Studies in Iconology (1939). Panofsky's framework moved iconography from cataloging symbols to interpreting them within their cultural context. His analysis of Jan van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait (1434, National Gallery, London) is a landmark of iconographic method. Panofsky argued that the painting is not just a portrait of a couple but a legal document of their marriage, with each object in the room (the lit candle, the shoes, the dog, the mirror) carrying symbolic weight that confirms the sacramental nature of the scene.
The Swiss scholar Othmar Keel (b. 1937) founded the field of biblical iconography and iconographic exegesis, which deciphers the content of biblical imagery through the relationship between image and text. Keel established the Fribourg School and the publication series Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis, which remains a central resource for the study of ancient Near Eastern visual culture. A 2026 study published in Saeculum extended Keel's methods to the iconography of gods and idols in ancient Israel, demonstrating how visual-plastic language and figurative representation require an interdisciplinary approach that combines archaeology, theology, and art history. Christian art is the most symbolically dense tradition in Western art. Saints are identified by their attributes: objects associated with their lives that serve as visual shorthand. Saint Peter carries keys (the keys to heaven). Saint Catherine of Alexandria carries a wheel (she was tortured on a broken wheel). Saint Lucy carries a plate with two eyes (she was associated with eyes and vision). The Virgin Mary is identified by her blue robe, the lily (purity), the rose (heavenly love), and the crescent moon (the Woman of the Apocalypse). Christ is identified by the lamb (sacrifice), the pelican (self-sacrifice, because medieval belief held that pelicans fed their young with their own blood), and the Ichthys fish (an acrostic for "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" in Greek).
Dutch Golden Age still-life paintings are loaded with symbols of mortality. A skull represents death. An hourglass represents the passage of time. A wilting flower represents decay. A peeled lemon represents the bitterness beneath the sweetness of life. A fly on a piece of fruit represents corruption. These symbols, collectively known as vanitas imagery, remind the viewer that earthly pleasures are temporary and that spiritual salvation is the only lasting value. Colors carry iconographic meaning that varies by culture and period. In Western Christian art, blue is the color of the Virgin Mary (heaven, truth, spiritual love). Red is the color of martyrs (blood, sacrifice) and of Christ's Passion. Gold represents divine light and is used for halos and backgrounds in Byzantine and early Renaissance art. White represents purity and is used for baptismal scenes and the Lamb of God. In Chinese art, red represents good fortune and joy. In Indian art, red represents sensuality and creative energy. A 2026 study published in Religions examined the iconography of the Daoist priest Liu Yiming, who used figures from the Book of Changes and alchemical symbols to transform abstract Neidan (internal alchemy) theory into intuitive visual expressions. Start with the obvious. What is depicted? Who are the figures? What are they doing? What objects are present? Then move to the iconographic level. What stories or concepts do these figures and objects refer to? This requires knowledge of the texts and traditions the artist was working within. A viewer who does not know the story of the Annunciation will not recognize the lily as a symbol of Mary's purity. A viewer who does not know the conventions of Dutch vanitas still life will not recognize the skull as a reminder of mortality.
Finally, move to the iconological level. What does the painting tell us about the culture that produced it? Why did the artist choose these particular symbols? What was the intended audience, and how would they have read the symbols? A painting of the Annunciation in a 15th-century Flemish church was not just a depiction of a biblical event. It was a theological statement about the nature of the Incarnation, aimed at an audience that understood the visual language of religious symbolism.
A 2026 study published in Eikon / Imago used eye-tracking technology to study how viewers perceive emblem art, a form that combines images and text to convey complex symbolic meaning. The researchers measured eye fixations to determine where viewers looked, for how long, and in what order. The study found that the reciprocal reading of logo-iconic elements, moving back and forth between words and pictures, creates meaning. Viewers did not simply look at the image or read the text. They alternated between the two, constructing meaning through the interaction of both elements. The research provides empirical evidence for how viewers process symbolic imagery, confirming that iconographic meaning is not contained in the image alone but in the relationship between image, text, and cultural knowledge. A 2026 study published in Religions examined the iconography of Mary holding a book in Early Christian and Medieval art. The research analyzed three case studies: a Marian scene on the ivory relief of the Werden casket (9th century), the depiction of the Mother of God in the crypt of Epiphanius at San Vincenzo al Volturno (9th century), and a fresco of Mary and Christ enthroned from the Egyptian monastery of Deir al-Suryan (10th century). Iconography is not limited to European Christian art. Every artistic tradition has its symbolic systems. In Buddhist art, the lotus flower represents purity and enlightenment. The wheel (dharmachakra) represents the Buddha's teachings. The deer represents the first sermon at Sarnath. In Hindu art, the multiple arms of deities represent their many powers and attributes. In Islamic art, geometric patterns represent the infinite nature of God, and calligraphy carries both textual and visual meaning. In Aboriginal Australian art, dot paintings encode Dreamtime stories, with each pattern carrying specific geographical and mythological information.
The methods of iconographic analysis developed for Western art can be applied to these traditions, but they must be adapted to the specific cultural context. A symbol that means one thing in Christian art may mean something entirely different in Buddhist or Islamic art. The lily, which symbolizes purity in Christian iconography, has different associations in other traditions. The iconographer must learn the visual language of each tradition before attempting to decode it.
Iconography connects to several other concepts in art history and theory. Color carries iconographic meaning, as different colors symbolize different ideas in different traditions. Chiaroscuro can carry symbolic weight, as in Rembrandt's use of light to represent divine illumination. Pentimento research can reveal iconographic changes, as when an artist alters the symbolic content of a composition during the painting process. Take a painting you know well and list every object, gesture, and color in it. Then research the symbolic meaning of each element. You will likely discover that the painting contains more meaning than you realized. A single flower in a portrait may identify the sitter's family. A book may indicate literacy and education. A dog may signify loyalty. The more you learn the visual language, the more paintings will reveal. Iconography is not a code that can be cracked once and for all.
