In May 2025, a surgical robot named Aramis was lowered in front of Caravaggio's The Fortune Teller at the Capitoline Museums in Rome. The robot, a medical-grade device designed for remote surgery, had been adapted to carry an X-ray fluorescence scanner across the painting's surface with micrometric precision. It was looking for an underlying painting hidden beneath the visible one, a second version of a Madonna and Child that has been an open question in Caravaggio scholarship for decades. The technology had never been used on a painting before. That a 400-year-old artwork is still generating new scientific discoveries tells you something about the Baroque period: it was built to be overwhelming, and it still is.
The Baroque is the period of European art that lasted from roughly 1600 to 1750. It replaced the balanced harmony and classical restraint of the Renaissance with drama, movement, emotional intensity, and theatrical displays of light and shadow. The word "Baroque" was originally a derogatory term meaning irregular, misshapen, or excessive. It was applied retroactively by 18th-century critics who preferred the order of Neoclassicism. What they dismissed as excess was in fact a deliberate strategy: Baroque art was designed to move the viewer, not to please them.

The Baroque emerged in Rome around 1600 and spread across Europe over the next century and a half. It was driven by two forces. The first was the Catholic Counter-Reformation, the Church's response to the Protestant Reformation. In 1545, the Council of Trent decreed that religious art should be clear, emotionally engaging, and accessible to ordinary viewers. The Church wanted art that would inspire devotion, not art that required theological education to decode. Baroque art delivered this by making biblical scenes feel immediate and physically present, with figures that look like real people in real space, lit by dramatic light.
The second force was absolutist monarchy. Kings and princes across Europe used Baroque art and architecture to project power. Versailles, built between 1661 and 1715, is the ultimate expression of this: a palace designed to make the visitor feel small and the king feel like a god. Baroque art served power, whether divine or royal, and its tools were the same in both cases: scale, drama, movement, and overwhelming sensory impact.
Stylistically, Baroque art is characterized by chiaroscuro (the strong contrast of light and dark), tenebrism (extreme darkness pierced by shafts of light), diagonal compositions that create a sense of movement, emotional intensity in facial expressions and gestures, and the dissolution of the boundary between the artwork and the viewer's space. Baroque paintings often have figures that break out of the picture frame, reaching toward the viewer or looking directly at them. Baroque sculpture, especially Bernini's, captures bodies in mid-motion, muscles tensed, fabric swirling.
The Baroque began in Rome in the last years of the 16th century. The Catholic Church had lost large parts of Northern Europe to Protestantism, and it needed a visual language that would win people back. The Council of Trent (1545-1563) had set the theological framework, but it took a generation for artists to translate that framework into a new style. Caravaggio, working in Rome from 1592 until his exile in 1606, provided the painting revolution. Annibale Carracci, working alongside him, provided the classical alternative. The two approaches, naturalistic drama and classical idealism, would coexist throughout the Baroque period.
The style spread rapidly. By 1600, Caravaggio's work was being copied and imitated across Italy and beyond. Caravaggisti, as his followers were called, carried his style to Naples, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. In Catholic Flanders, Peter Paul Rubens built a massive workshop that produced enormous altarpieces and mythological canvases for churches and princes. In Protestant Holland, a different Baroque developed, stripped of religious drama and focused on landscape, still life, and genre scenes. In Spain, Velazquez and Zurbaran used Caravaggio's tenebrism to create some of the most physically present paintings in Western art. In France, Poussin and Claude Lorrain developed a classical Baroque that would eventually feed into Neoclassicism.
The Baroque period ended around 1750, when the Rococo replaced it as the dominant style among European elites. But Baroque architecture, music, and painting continued to influence culture long after the period formally ended. The term "Baroque" itself was not used as a period label until the 19th century, when Swiss art historian Heinrich Wolfflin defined it in his 1888 book Renaissance und Barock.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is the painter who made the Baroque happen. He rejected the idealized figures of late Mannerism and painted biblical scenes as if they were happening in the streets of Rome. The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599-1600, Contarelli Chapel, San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome) shows Matthew sitting in a dark tavern when Christ enters and points at him. The light falls across the scene like a physical beam, illuminating Matthew's surprised face. The figures wear contemporary clothing. The setting is a real Roman tavern. Caravaggio made the divine feel like it could walk into your local bar.
His technique was tenebrism: painting from a dark ground and building up the lit areas with thin layers of paint, leaving the shadows almost black. The effect is theatrical, as if a spotlight has been switched on in a dark room. Caravaggio worked fast and rarely drew, painting directly on the canvas, which shocked his contemporaries. In 2025, the Italian government acquired his Portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini (c. 1598) for nearly $35 million, one of the most expensive artworks the country has ever purchased. Only three universally accepted portraits by Caravaggio exist, and this one, depicting the future Pope Urban VIII, is now permanently housed at Palazzo Barberini in Rome. A landmark restoration of Caravaggio's final painting, The Martyrdom of St. Ursula (1610), was completed in 2025 as part of the blockbuster "Caravaggio 2025" exhibition in Rome. Cleaning and new X-ray imaging revealed three hidden details: the tip of a soldier's nose and helmet to the right of Attila, clarity on a pilgrim-like figure wearing a hat, and a soldier's helmet with an eye slit above Ursula's head. Bernini was the sculptor who defined Baroque three-dimensionality. His Apollo and Daphne (1622-1625, Galleria Borghese, Rome) captures the moment Daphne transforms into a tree as Apollo reaches for her. Leaves sprout from her fingers, bark wraps her legs, and her hair streams behind her, all carved from a single block of marble. The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1647-1652, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome) shows the saint in spiritual rapture, her body reclining, her mouth parted, as an angel holds a golden arrow. The sculpture is set in a theater of colored marble and hidden windows that pour real light onto the figure. Bernini made sculpture do what painting could not: occupy the viewer's space and make them feel like witnesses.
Rubens was the Baroque painter of the Catholic North. Working in Antwerp, he ran a workshop that produced enormous canvases for churches, palaces, and collectors across Europe. The Descent from the Cross (1612-1614, Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp) shows Christ's body sliding down a white shroud, his flesh painted with a luminosity that makes dead skin look alive. Rubens combined Caravaggio's drama with Venetian color and Italianate composition. His figures are muscular, fleshy, and always in motion. The Raising of the Cross (1610-1611) tilts diagonally, forcing the viewer to feel the physical effort of the men hauling the cross upright.
Velazquez was the court painter to Philip IV of Spain and the greatest Baroque portraitist. Las Meninas (1656, Museo del Prado, Madrid) is a painting about looking. The Infanta Margarita stands in the painter's studio, attended by maids, a dwarf, and a dog. Velazquez himself stands at his easel, looking out at the viewer. In the background mirror, the King and Queen are reflected, standing where the viewer stands. The painting collapses the distinction between subject and viewer, inside and outside, in a way that still feels radical 350 years later. Velazquez's loose brushwork, especially in his late portraits like that of Pope Innocent X (c. 1650, Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome), was so direct that Sargent and Manet would study it two centuries later.
Rembrandt is the Baroque painter who worked outside the Catholic tradition. In Protestant Holland, there was no Counter-Reformation driving religious drama, and no princes commissioning ceiling frescoes. Rembrandt made Baroque drama work in the context of private devotion and individual psychology. The Night Watch (1642, Rijksmuseum) uses Caravaggio's tenebrism but redirects it: the light falls not on a saint but on a militia captain and his lieutenant, ordinary men made extraordinary by paint. Operation Night Watch, the Rijksmuseum's ongoing research project, has used macroscopic X-ray fluorescence and X-ray powder diffraction to map Rembrandt's pigments across the entire 3.6-meter canvas. A 2025 study published in npj Heritage Science revealed that Rembrandt used arsenic-based pigments, including pararealgar and semi-amorphous pararealgar, to capture the warm reflections of gold threads on Lieutenant Van Ruytenburch's costume. Gentileschi was the most accomplished female Baroque painter and one of Caravaggio's most powerful followers. Judith Slaying Holofernes (c. 1612-1613, Museo di Capodimonte, Naples) shows two women sawing off a man's head while blood sprays across the bedsheets. The painting is technically brilliant, with Caravaggio's tenebrism and physical realism, but it is also personal: Gentileschi had been raped by her tutor Agostino Tassi in 1611, and the painting has been read as a response to that violence. Her later works, including Susanna and the Elders (1610, Schonborn Collection, Pommersfelden), demonstrate that she was not merely imitating Caravaggio but extending his methods into psychological territory he never explored.
Baroque paintings are easy to identify once you know what to look for. The most immediate signal is light. Baroque painters, especially Caravaggio and his followers, use extreme contrasts of light and dark. Figures emerge from darkness as if lit by a single source. The shadows are not soft transitions but abrupt, theatrical darkness. This is tenebrism, and it is the signature visual tool of the Baroque.
Compositions are diagonal rather than symmetrical. Where Renaissance paintings arrange figures in stable, balanced triangles, Baroque paintings thrust across the canvas at an angle. Figures reach, twist, fall, and strain. The viewer's eye is pulled through the composition rather than allowed to rest at the center. Baroque sculptures, especially Bernini's, capture bodies in mid-action with no stillness or repose.
Emotional intensity is another marker. Baroque faces are not serene. They show pain, ecstasy, terror, rage. The gestures are large and theatrical. Figures often look directly at the viewer or reach out of the picture plane. The boundary between the artwork and the real world is deliberately blurred.
In architecture, Baroque means curved walls, broken pediments, ornate decoration, and spatial complexity. Baroque churches like Borromini's San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (1638-1646) in Rome reject the flat facade and right angle in favor of undulating surfaces that seem to breathe.
The Baroque established the visual language of drama that Western art has used ever since. Caravaggio's tenebrism fed directly into Rembrandt's psychological darkness and, much later, into the lighting of film noir. Bernini's theatrical integration of sculpture, architecture, and light prefigured installation art. The Baroque concept of art as an immersive experience designed to overwhelm the viewer has never gone away; it shows up in everything from opera staging to IMAX theaters.
The Baroque also produced the first great secular genres. In Protestant Holland, the absence of church commissions drove painters toward landscape, still life, genre scenes, and portraiture as independent subjects. These genres, which had been minor categories in the Renaissance, became major art forms during the Baroque and have remained so ever since. The Dutch Golden Age is the branch of the Baroque that gave us the modern idea that a painting of a woman pouring milk or a bowl of fruit can be a masterpiece.
Rome is the Baroque city. The Galleria Borghese has Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, The Rape of Proserpina, and David, plus Caravaggio's Bacchus, Boy with a Basket of Fruit, and Saint Jerome Writing. Palazzo Barberini now houses the newly acquired Portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini. The Contarelli Chapel has The Calling of Saint Matthew in situ. Santa Maria della Vittoria has Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. The Vatican has Bernini's baldachin over the main altar and his colonnade enclosing St. Peter's Square.
Outside Rome, the Prado in Madrid has Velazquez and the Flemish Baroque. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has Rembrandt and the Dutch Baroque. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has Rubens. The National Gallery in London has Caravaggio, Rubens, and Rembrandt in the same building. The Louvre has Caravaggio's Death of the Virgin and a major Rubens collection.
