Wherever people wove cloth, they embellished it with additional stitching. A thread passed through fabric with a needle can outline a shape, fill an area with color, create texture through raised padding, or catch light through metallic thread. Embroidery requires three things: a needle, thread, and a ground fabric. The needle passes the thread through the fabric in a specific pattern, creating stitches that form the design. The basic stitches are few, but their combinations are effectively infinite.
The fundamental stitches include the running stitch (a simple in-and-out motion producing a dashed line), the back stitch (a continuous line where each stitch overlaps the previous one), the chain stitch (looped stitches that form a linked chain), the satin stitch (parallel stitches laid closely together to fill a shape with smooth color), the split stitch (each stitch splits the previous one, producing a textured line), the French knot (a wrapped stitch that produces a small raised dot), and couching (threads laid on the surface and secured with separate stitching). These stitches, developed over thousands of years, form the vocabulary of embroidery worldwide.
Embroidery differs from weaving and tapestry in that the design is applied to an existing fabric rather than being created in the structure of the fabric itself. The ground fabric is complete before the embroidery begins. The embroiderer adds to it. This means that embroidery can be added to any fabric, from fine silk to coarse linen, and can be combined with other techniques including painting, printing, and beadwork.
Threads vary from fine silk (used in Chinese imperial embroidery and Suzhou embroidery) to wool (used in European crewelwork), cotton (used in most contemporary embroidery), and metallic threads (gold and silver, used in ecclesiastical and court embroidery). The choice of thread affects the visual quality of the work: silk produces a smooth, lustrous surface; wool produces a soft, matte texture; metallic thread produces reflective highlights that catch light and create the effect of jewelry rendered in thread.
Embroidery has been practiced in virtually every culture that produced woven cloth. Chinese embroidery, which developed silk thread and the range of stitches that form the basis of most world embroidery practice, has a continuous tradition of approximately 2,000 years. The embroideries produced for the imperial court during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties include some of the most technically accomplished needlework in history, with fine silk threads worked on silk grounds to produce images of extraordinary tonal subtlety.
In medieval Europe, embroidery occupied a prominent place in the visual culture of the Church. Opus Anglicanum (English work), produced from roughly the late 11th through the 14th centuries, was so highly regarded across Europe that examples were given as diplomatic gifts, purchased by popes, and listed in papal inventories alongside goldsmiths' work and painting. The use of gold and silver thread couched over padding to create relief images, combined with fine silk split-stitch shading, produced an effect of extraordinary luminosity.
The Bayeux Tapestry, produced in the 1070s, is technically embroidery rather than woven tapestry. It uses wool thread on linen ground, with stem stitch for outlines and laid couched work for fills. At 70 meters long, it depicts the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 in a continuous narrative that reads like a comic strip. The Bayeux Tapestry demonstrates that embroidery was used for large-scale narrative work, not just small decorative pieces.
The professional embroidery workshops of medieval London, centered near St Paul's Cathedral, produced work for export across Europe. The technical demands of Opus Anglicanum required extremely fine thread counts, precise management of complex stitch directions to create shading effects, and the couching of gold and silver metallic threads in laid patterns. Skilled workers were highly valued even if rarely named in historical records.
Bess of Hardwick (1527-1608), one of the wealthiest women in Elizabethan England, was a prolific embroiderer who worked on large narrative and emblematic panels with her household, including the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. The survival of a substantial body of work associated with Bess, now distributed between Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and other collections, provides an unusually rich picture of how embroidery functioned as both social practice and personal expression for a powerful woman in the Tudor period.
The Industrial Revolution mechanized embroidery through the sewing machine and, later, computerized embroidery machines. Hand embroidery declined as a professional trade but persisted as a domestic practice, taught to girls as an accomplishment. This association with domesticity and femininity is what made embroidery a target for feminist reclamation in the 1970s.
Reichek has worked in embroidery since the 1970s, using needlework to engage with conceptual art, feminism, and art history. Her First Morse Message (2003) is a 29-foot organdy curtain embroidered with Samuel F. B. Morse's 1844 telegram, linking code, digital logic, and decoration. A 2026 interview in BOMB Magazine describes Reichek as a figure who "mobilized fabric, thread, and literary and art historical references to beautiful, critical ends, prefiguring feminist discourse while playing with the complexities of text and image." Her recent exhibition Back Stitch revisited and revised her work from the 1970s, with some pieces double-dated (e.g., 1977/2024) to acknowledge their layered history. The 2026 exhibition The Awakening of Embroidery at the Royal Geographical Society in London presented the first contemporary art exhibition in the UK dedicated to Chinese Suzhou embroidery. The collaboration between contemporary artist Wu Jian'an and Suzhou embroidery masters Yao Huifen and Yao Huiqin featured 58 works that redefined embroidery from a "representational craft technique" to an "autonomous artistic language." The exhibition systematically presented 49 traditional Suzhou embroidery stitches as fundamental units of a visual language, then used them in works that moved from representation toward pure abstraction. Sahetya, an MFA graduate from JNAFAU in Hyderabad, uses embroidery on sanitary pads to explore menstruation stigma, bodily trauma, and healing. Her first exhibition at the Hyderabad Literary Festival in 2025 used repetitive threadwork to transform shame into visibility. Her practice has expanded beyond surface embroidery into relief and sculptural forms resembling organs, wounds, and ritual artifacts.
