Tapestry: Woven Pictorial Textile From Medieval Walls to Contemporary Art

Stand close to the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries at the Cloisters in New York and you will notice something that no photograph conveys. The surface is not flat. Thousands of wool threads sit in tight rows, building an image that has the density and weight of a painting but the texture of fabric. The flowers in the background are not painted on. They are woven in, thread by thread, and they exist only because a weaver spent weeks working them into the structure of the cloth. In a tapestry, the image and its support are the same object. You cannot separate the picture from the fabric because the picture is the fabric.

Tapestry is a form of woven textile art in which a pictorial or decorative image is created through the interlacing of warp and weft threads on a loom. Unlike painting, where pigment is applied to a surface, tapestry builds the image simultaneously with the fabric. The warp threads, stretched vertically on the loom, are hidden in the finished work. The weft threads, woven horizontally across the warp, are what the viewer sees, and they form the image through their colors and arrangement. The word "tapestry" is sometimes used loosely to refer to any large wall hanging, but technically it refers specifically to weft-faced weaving, where the weft completely covers the warp.

This entry covers the history of tapestry from medieval European production to contemporary practice, the workshops and artists who defined the medium, and how a technique that is thousands of years old is being reimagined by contemporary artists working with digital tools and industrial looms.

What Is Tapestry and How Does It Work?

Tapestry weaving is a discontinuous weft technique. In ordinary weaving, the weft thread runs continuously from one edge of the fabric to the other, creating a uniform surface. In tapestry, the weft is woven only in the area where a particular color is needed. The weaver works from a cartoon, a full-scale drawing or painting of the intended design, which is placed behind the warp threads on the loom. The weaver follows the cartoon, selecting colors and building the image row by row, changing weft threads as the design requires.

This discontinuous weft is what allows tapestry to create complex pictorial images. The weaver can produce curves, color transitions, and fine detail by controlling where each weft thread begins and ends. The technique is slow. A skilled weaver at the Gobelins workshop in Paris can produce approximately one square meter of tapestry per month, depending on the complexity of the design. The slowness is part of the point. Tapestry is a medium of deliberation, where every square inch represents hours of decisions about color, tension, and placement.

The materials are traditionally wool for the weft, sometimes combined with silk for finer detail or metallic threads for highlights. The warp is typically linen or cotton. Wool is the preferred weft material because it takes dye well, is durable, and has the structural integrity to hold shape in the woven surface. The dyes used in historical tapestries were natural: madder for red, woad for blue, weld for yellow, and walnut hulls for brown. These dyes produce the slightly muted, earthy palette that characterizes medieval and Renaissance tapestries.

History and Origins

Tapestry weaving is ancient. The earliest known tapestry fragments date from around 3000 BCE and were found in Egypt. The Coptic tapestries of late antiquity, produced between the 3rd and 7th centuries CE, show sophisticated figurative weaving with Christian and pagan imagery. But tapestry as a major art form, produced at scale for royal and ecclesiastical patrons, emerged in medieval Europe.

The golden age of European tapestry production ran from the 14th through the 17th centuries. Arras in Flanders (now France) gave its name to the general term for tapestries in medieval England, where they were called "arras." By the 15th century, Brussels had become the dominant production center, and the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries (c. 1495-1505, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cloisters Collection, New York) are among the finest surviving examples. Woven in wool and silk with silver and gold threads, the seven hangings depict a hunt for a unicorn across dense, flower-strewn landscapes. The botanical accuracy of the plants, over a hundred species identifiable, suggests that the designers studied from life.

In the 17th century, the French royal workshops at the Gobelins (established 1662 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert under Louis XIV) and Beauvais (established 1664) centralized tapestry production under state control. The Gobelins workshop, still active in Paris today, produced some of the most technically accomplished tapestries ever made. Raphael's Acts of the Apostles cartoons, woven in Brussels in the 1510s and later copied at the Gobelins, set a standard for pictorial tapestry that lasted centuries.

The 20th century saw tapestry reinvented as a contemporary art medium. In France, Jean Lurcat (1892-1966) led a revival of tapestry as a fine art form after World War II, designing cartoons that were woven at Aubusson. Lurcat's Le Chant du Monde (1957-1966, Angers) is a series of ten tapestries addressing the atomic age and the threat of nuclear destruction, demonstrating that tapestry could engage with contemporary themes, not just historical and decorative ones.

Key Artists and Masterworks

The Hunt of the Unicorn Tapestries (c. 1495-1505)

These seven hangings at the Cloisters in New York are the most famous medieval tapestries in existence. The Unicorn in Captivity panel, showing the unicorn chained to a pomegranate tree within a fenced enclosure, is among the most reproduced images in art history. The technical sophistication of the weaving, with its hundreds of identifiable plant species and its subtle color transitions, represents the peak of late Gothic tapestry production.

Jean Lurcat (1892-1966)

Lurcat's Le Chant du Monde (1957-1966) reinvented tapestry as a medium for contemporary political and existential themes. The series, woven at Aubusson, uses bold colors and simplified forms that are well suited to the woven surface. Lurcat also reformed the cartoon-to-weaving process, designing works specifically for the medium rather than translating paintings into tapestry.

Melissa Cody (b. 1983)

Cody, a Navajo weaver, creates tapestries that combine traditional Diné weaving techniques with contemporary patterns and digital aesthetics. Her work uses the Germantown revival style, characterized by bright, aniline-dyed yarns and complex geometric patterns, and pushes it into territory that references pixel art and digital culture. Cody's work was included in the 2024 Whitney Biennial, and she is among the contemporary artists featured in the exhibition You Stretched Diagonally Across It: Contemporary Tapestry at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia in 2026. Sarah Rosalena (b. 1982)

Rosalena, an artist and associate professor of computational craft at UC Santa Barbara, creates tapestries that bridge Indigenous weaving traditions and digital technology. Her Threading the Boundless: Omnidirectional Terrain (2025), commissioned by LACMA for the David Geffen Galleries, is a 27-foot tapestry woven on an industrial jacquard-rapier loom. The work uses handweaving patterns distorted through computer-generated satellite imagery of planetary terrains, combining over 12,000 warp threads with materials ranging from soft mohair to metallic yarns. Hussein Shikha (b. 1995)

The Baghdad-born, Antwerp-based artist creates jacquard-woven tapestries that combine digital image-making with southern Iraqi visual culture and Mesopotamian mythology. His series They Who Saw Nothing but Beauty, made during a residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie, consists of seven jacquard-woven tapestries depicting moments connected to the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala. Shikha notes the historical connection between the Jacquard loom's punched cards and early computing: "The pixel, in a sense, descends from the loom." Read the profile at Creative Boom.

The Jacquard Loom and the Digital Connection

The Jacquard loom, invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804, mechanized the pattern-weaving process using punched cards to control which warp threads were raised for each weft pass. This innovation is significant beyond textile history: the punched card system directly influenced Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, one of the earliest concepts for a programmable computer. The connection between weaving and computing is not metaphorical. It is historical. Contemporary artists like Rosalena and Shikha explicitly work at this intersection, using digital tools to design patterns that are then woven on industrial jacquard looms, closing a loop that runs from the early 19th century to the present.

Tapestry Today

Tapestry is experiencing a renewed moment in contemporary art. The 2026 exhibition You Stretched Diagonally Across It: Contemporary Tapestry at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, organized by curator Su Wu, featured 25 artists expanding tapestry beyond its traditional boundaries. The exhibition included works made with barbed wire, pine needles, and the loom itself as a material, challenging conventions of what a tapestry can be. The exhibition traveled from Dallas Contemporary to Philadelphia, with newly commissioned works by local artists Qualeasha Wood and David Hartt. Read about the exhibition at Fabric Workshop and Museum.

At the National Gallery of Australia, the 2026 exhibition Arthur Boyd: Tapestries revealed the story of 20 tapestries commissioned by the Australian painter from Portuguese weavers in the 1970s. The weavers worked from small photographic transparencies, never seeing the original pastel drawings, and produced 2.5 by 3.4 meter tapestries with approximately 4.5 million handwoven stitches each. The exhibition highlighted the collaborative, interpretive nature of tapestry production, where every color and texture requires the weaver's judgment. Read about the exhibition at ArtsHub.

See Tapestry in Person

Tapestry must be seen in person to be understood. Photographs flatten the woven surface and eliminate the tactile quality that defines the medium. Start with the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries at the Cloisters in New York, where the density and detail of medieval weaving is visible up close. Then visit the Gobelins workshop in Paris, which still produces tapestries using traditional techniques and is open for scheduled visits. For contemporary practice, look for the traveling exhibition You Stretched Diagonally Across It and visit LACMA in Los Angeles, where Sarah Rosalena's 27-foot commission is installed.
