Watercolor Paper: The Surface That Makes Watercolor Possible

Walk into any art supply store and you will find watercolor paper sold in three surface textures, three standard weights, two fiber contents, and a confusing array of brand names. Arches, Fabriano, Saunders Waterford, Canson, Strathmore. The choices seem endless, but they all come down to three decisions: what the paper is made of, how thick it is, and what texture it has. Get those three right and everything else follows. Get them wrong and your paint will buckle the sheet, granulate in ugly ways, or fail to absorb at all.

Watercolor paper is a thick, absorbent paper specifically designed for water-based media. It is made from either cotton fibers, wood pulp, or a blend of both, with sizing added to control how quickly paint soaks into the surface. Unlike regular paper, watercolor paper is built to hold large amounts of water without disintegrating, buckling, or allowing pigment to spread uncontrollably. The three surface textures are hot pressed (smooth), cold pressed (lightly textured), and rough (heavily textured). What Is Watercolor Paper and Why Does It Matter?

Regular paper buckles badly when wet. The fibers are not built for it. Watercolor paper, by contrast, is made from fibers that are long, strong, and naturally absorbent. When water and pigment hit the surface, the paper absorbs the water while the sizing controls the rate of absorption, giving the painter time to blend, lift, and layer before the paint sets. The texture of the surface, called the "tooth," determines how pigment settles. A smooth surface lets paint sit on top, giving more blending time. A textured surface causes pigment to pool in the valleys and skip the peaks, creating natural granulation.

The difference between cheap and good watercolor paper is not subtle. A 100% cotton sheet from Arches handles wet-on-wet washes, glazing, dry brushing, and lifting with a responsiveness that wood pulp paper cannot match. Paint sits on the surface longer, colors appear more vibrant, and the paper can be scrubbed and reworked without pilling. Wood pulp paper, by contrast, is adequate for practice but will yellow over time and cannot withstand heavy washes or aggressive lifting.

History and Origins

Paper was invented in China by Cai Lun around 105 AD, made from hemp and ramie rags, rope scraps, and paper mulberry fibers. The technology spread along the Silk Road to the Islamic world by the 8th century and reached Europe by the 12th century. Early European paper was made from linen and hemp rags, which produced strong, durable sheets. Watercolor as a medium gained prominence in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, used for topographical studies, botanical illustration, and landscape painting. J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Girtin, and John Sell Cotman pushed watercolor from a tool for sketches into a major painting medium. The paper they used was made from cotton and linen rags, produced by mills like Whatman, which introduced the wove surface in the 1750s. James Whatman the Elder developed the wove wire mold at Turkey Mill in Maidstone, Kent, producing paper without the ribbed pattern left by traditional laid molds. This smooth, even surface was better suited to watercolor than laid paper.

The industrial revolution changed paper production. The Fourdrinier machine, introduced in the early 1800s, could produce paper in continuous rolls rather than individual sheets. The Hollander beater, introduced in the 1600s but widely adopted in the 19th century, chopped fibers into shorter lengths, producing paper that was less strong than stamp-milled paper but faster to make. By the mid-19th century, wood pulp began replacing rag fibers in commercial paper production because wood was cheaper and more abundant. Wood pulp paper, however, contains lignin, which causes yellowing and deterioration. For watercolor, cotton rag paper remained the professional standard.

In the 20th century, several European mills established the quality standards that still define professional watercolor paper. Arches, a French mill operating since 1492, began producing watercolor paper in the 19th century and is now owned by Canson. Fabriano, an Italian mill operating since 1264, developed the cylinder mold machine. St Cuthberts Mill in England produces Saunders Waterford paper. These mills use cylinder mold machines that replicate the texture and quality of handmade paper at industrial scale.

Fiber Content: Cotton vs. Wood Pulp

100% Cotton Paper

Cotton fibers are long, flexible, naturally white, and nearly pure cellulose with very little lignin. This makes them chemically stable and highly durable when wet. Cotton paper can hold large amounts of water, resists multiple washes without warping, and withstands scrubbing and lifting without pilling. It is also naturally acid-free, which means it will not yellow or become brittle over time. Most professional watercolor paper is 100% cotton. Arches, Fabriano Artistico, and Saunders Waterford are all 100% cotton papers. The main drawback is cost. A single sheet of 140 lb Arches costs several dollars, compared to cents for wood pulp paper.

Wood Pulp Paper

Wood pulp paper is cheaper because wood is more available and easier to process. But wood fibers are shorter and contain lignin, which causes yellowing and deterioration. Even after processing to remove lignin, wood pulp paper is weaker and less durable than cotton. It is adequate for practice, sketching, and learning, but not for finished work that needs to last. Strathmore 400 Series and Canson Montval are popular wood pulp or blend papers used by students.

Blended Paper

Some papers combine cotton and wood pulp to reduce cost while improving performance. According to Etchr Lab's material testing, 50% cotton cold press paper performs closer to 100% cotton than to pure wood pulp paper in paint vibrancy and handling. These papers are a reasonable middle ground for artists who want better performance than wood pulp without paying full cotton prices.

Surface Textures

Watercolor paper comes in three surface textures, each suited to different techniques and styles.

Hot Pressed

Hot pressed paper is pressed through heated metal rollers, producing a very smooth, hard surface with minimal texture. Paint sits on the surface longer, giving more time to blend but less natural granulation. Hot pressed paper is the choice for botanical illustration, detailed realism, pen-and-wash, and any work requiring fine lines. Cold Pressed (Not)

Cold pressed paper, also called "Not" (meaning not hot pressed), is pressed through cold felt-covered rollers, creating a soft, pebbly texture. This is the most popular surface for watercolor. According to Dick Blick's buyer research, cold press is the default for 80% of watercolor painters because its medium texture works across the widest range of techniques. Rough

Rough paper goes through minimal pressing during manufacturing, leaving heavy, irregular peaks and valleys across the sheet. Paint catches on the raised peaks and skips the valleys, creating broken edges and granulation without any extra technique. Weights and What They Mean

Watercolor paper weight is measured in grams per square meter (gsm) or pounds per ream (lb). The weight indicates thickness and determines how much water the paper can hold before warping.

90 lb (185 gsm) is the lightest standard weight. It buckles easily when wet and requires stretching before use. It is suitable only for light washes and practice.

140 lb (300 gsm) is the industry standard. It handles washes well but may still buckle with heavy wet techniques. Most painters stretch or tape down 140 lb paper before working. This is the weight most professional watercolorists use for finished work.

300 lb (640 gsm) is the heaviest standard weight. It rarely buckles, even with heavy washes, and does not require stretching. It is expensive and harder to cut, but it allows for aggressive wet techniques and multiple layers without distortion.

How to Choose Watercolor Paper

For beginners, start with cold pressed 140 lb (300 gsm) 100% cotton paper. It is versatile, forgiving, and suitable for learning all techniques. For detailed work like botanical illustration, switch to hot pressed. For expressive landscapes and atmospheric effects, try rough. For practice and sketching, wood pulp or blend paper is perfectly acceptable.
