Rough Paper: The Heavily Textured Surface for Expressive Watercolor

Paint a wash on rough paper and the pigment does not spread evenly. It catches on the raised peaks of the surface and skips the deep valleys. The result is a broken, mottled, irregular wash that looks like it painted itself. This is the point. Rough paper does the textural work for you. A single sweep of a loaded brush across rough paper produces the kind of granulation that would require multiple layers and careful technique on a smoother surface. Rough paper is watercolor paper that has been left to dry with minimal pressing during manufacturing, producing the heaviest and most pronounced surface texture of the three standard watercolor paper types. How Rough Paper Is Made

How Rough Paper Handles Paint

The earliest watercolor papers, made from cotton and linen rags at mills like Whatman in England, were naturally textured. When hot pressing was developed to produce smooth paper for printing and illustration, the original, less-pressed surface became known as "rough" to distinguish it from the new smooth and moderately pressed surfaces.

The English watercolor school of the late 18th and early 19th centuries embraced rough paper for landscape painting. J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) used rough paper for many of his later watercolors, where the texture of the surface contributes to the atmospheric, almost abstract quality of the work. His Storm at Sea (c. 1840-1845) and the Swiss watercolor studies of the 1840s show how rough paper can suggest the chaos of water and weather without detailed rendering. Rough vs. Cold Pressed vs. Hot Pressed

Rough paper is the most textured of the three standard watercolor surfaces. Cold pressed is moderately textured, the most popular choice for general watercolor work. Hot pressed is smooth, chosen for fine detail and botanical illustration. Rough paper is the specialty surface for expressive, textural, and atmospheric work where the surface itself becomes part of the image.

The trade-off with rough paper is detail. Fine lines are difficult because the brush skips across the peaks. Botanical illustration is nearly impossible on rough paper. Portraits and architectural subjects that require precision are better suited to cold pressed or hot pressed. But for landscapes, skies, water, and any subject where texture and atmosphere matter more than precision, rough paper is the best choice.

How to Use Rough Paper

Rough paper rewards loose, confident brushwork and punishes fussy detail. Work with larger brushes and broader strokes. Let the texture of the paper create the effects rather than trying to control every mark. For skies, a single wash on rough paper will produce more atmospheric variation than multiple layers on a smoother surface. For rocks and terrain, dry brushing on rough paper creates natural texture without effort.

Rough paper is available in the same weights as other watercolor papers. 140 lb (300 gsm) is standard, though the heavy texture can make the paper feel more substantial than cold pressed at the same weight. 300 lb (640 gsm) rough paper is also available and is particularly good for large-scale landscape work because it does not require stretching.
