Take any photograph class, any painting workshop, any design tutorial, and within the first hour someone will mention the rule of thirds. Divide your frame into nine equal rectangles by drawing two horizontal lines and two vertical lines at the one-third and two-third marks. Place your subject where the lines intersect. Place your horizon on one of the horizontal lines. The composition will look better. This advice is repeated so often that it has become the most widely known compositional guideline in visual art. It is also, as research has shown, less important than its popularity suggests. The rule of thirds is a useful starting point, but it is not a law, and its aesthetic effects are more complicated than the textbooks claim.
The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline that divides a rectangular frame into nine equal sections using two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. The four points where these lines intersect are called power points, and the lines themselves are called third lines. The guideline recommends placing the main subject or focal point of an image on or near one of these power points, and positioning important horizontal elements such as horizons along one of the horizontal third lines rather than at the center of the frame.
This entry covers what the rule of thirds is, where it came from, how artists and photographers use it, and what empirical research says about whether it actually improves compositions.
What Is the Rule of Thirds?
The rule of thirds produces an asymmetric composition. By placing the subject off-center, the guideline creates visual tension and directs the viewer's eye across the frame. A centered subject feels static and formal. An off-center subject feels dynamic and natural. The rule of thirds formalizes this intuition by specifying exactly how far off-center the subject should go: one-third of the way from an edge.
The four power points are at the intersections of the third lines. Placing a subject at a power point creates a visual anchor that draws the eye. The remaining space in the frame, the area not occupied by the subject, becomes active rather than passive. In a landscape photograph with the horizon on the lower third line, the sky occupies two-thirds of the frame and dominates the composition. With the horizon on the upper third line, the land dominates. The choice changes the meaning of the image.
The rule of thirds is related to but simpler than the golden ratio. The golden ratio divides a line at approximately 38/62 percent, while the rule of thirds divides it at 33/67 percent. The two are close enough that the difference is often imperceptible. Some writers have conflated the two, treating the rule of thirds as an approximation of the golden ratio. A 2024 historical investigation published by PetaPixel, conducted with a Villanova University history professor, traced the true photographic history of the rule of thirds and found that the conflation of the rule of thirds with the golden ratio was a mistake that first appeared in a 1955 issue of the British Journal of Photography. Origins and History
The Painterly Origins (18th-19th Century)
The idea that a subject should be moved away from the center of the frame predates the name "rule of thirds" by more than a century. The PetaPixel investigation found that from 1869 onward, photography textbooks recommended moving subjects away from the center and toward, but not too near, the edge of the frame. This was a practical tip, not a rigid system. It was based on the observation that centered subjects in photographs looked stiff and unnatural, while off-center subjects looked more dynamic.
The painterly tradition had its own proportional systems. The 1937 textbook Composition for Photographers by Haile was entirely based on a painterly approach, illustrated mostly with paintings, and did not mention the rule of thirds by name. It did, however, discuss the golden mean and its application to composition. Henri Cartier-Bresson's The Decisive Moment (1952) pushed back against rigid pictorialist approaches to photographic composition, arguing that photographers should trust their instincts rather than follow geometric formulas.
The Name "Rule of Thirds" (1942)
The PetaPixel research found that the name "rule of thirds" was first attached to the concept in 1942. Before that, the idea existed but was unnamed. The naming coincided with a shift in photography from pictorialism to modernism, and the concept lay largely dormant during the modernist period. It was Carleton Wallace, a crime novelist and prolific author of photography self-help books, who in The Complete Book of Photography (1958) created the subtle shift from "move the subject away from center" to "place the subject precisely on the intersection of third lines." This shift transformed a flexible guideline into a rigid rule.
Popularization (1960s-present)
From the 1960s onward, the rule of thirds became a standard feature of photography education. It appeared in textbooks, workshops, camera manuals, and eventually in the grid overlay built into digital camera viewfinders and smartphone camera apps. The widespread availability of the thirds grid on digital screens cemented the rule as the default compositional guideline for amateur photographers. The rule's simplicity is part of its appeal: it can be explained in 30 seconds and applied immediately, unlike the golden ratio, which requires understanding irrational numbers.
The Rule of Thirds in Painting
The rule of thirds is primarily associated with photography, but the underlying principle of off-center placement has a long history in painting. Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) placed subjects off-center in many of his interior scenes. The Milkmaid (c. 1657-1658, Rijksmuseum) places the figure slightly left of center, with the table and window creating a diagonal that draws the eye through the frame. Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665, Mauritshuis) places the figure's face at approximately the left third of the canvas.
J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) placed horizons on the lower third in many of his seascapes, giving the sky two-thirds of the canvas to fill with light and atmosphere. The Fighting Temeraire (1839, National Gallery, London) places the ship on the left third of the canvas, with the sun setting on the right third. The composition creates a sense of movement from left to right, the old ship being towed to its destruction.
Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) used off-center placement in his landscapes. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818, Hamburger Kunsthalle) places the figure at the vertical center but at the upper third of the canvas, with the landscape filling the lower two-thirds. The placement makes the figure appear to tower over the landscape while also being dwarfed by the sky above.
What Research Says About the Rule of Thirds
The aesthetic effectiveness of the rule of thirds has been tested empirically, and the results are mixed. A landmark 2014 study published in Art and Perception compared calculated rule-of-thirds values with subjective ratings from 30 participants. The study found that for photographs that followed the rule of thirds, subjective scores matched calculated values reasonably well. However, aesthetic ratings correlated only weakly with subjective rule-of-thirds scores and not at all with calculated values. For photographs rated as highly aesthetic and for a large set of paintings, calculated rule-of-thirds values were about as low as in photographs that did not follow the rule. The study concluded that "despite its proclaimed importance in artistic composition, the rule of thirds seems to play only a minor, if any, role in large sets of high-quality photographs and paintings." A 2024 preprint published on OSF explored whether the rule of thirds affects memory recall. Fifteen participants completed visual search and memory recall tasks with stimuli positioned at rule-of-thirds locations, central non-rule-of-thirds locations, and far locations. The results showed a significant improvement in accuracy for stimuli aligned with rule-of-thirds locations compared to central locations, suggesting that rule-of-thirds alignment may enhance memory encoding efficiency. However, no significant differences in reaction times were observed. Read the study at OSF.
A 2025 study published in the proceedings of the ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction evaluated rule-of-thirds composition in the context of AI-generated photography. The study found that AI-generated images showed better compliance with traditional composition techniques like the rule of thirds, while also highlighting the role of AI as a transformative tool in photography education and media production. A 2025 study published in the proceedings of the ACM Multimedia conference developed a rule-of-thirds detection system using interpretable geometric features. The researchers used machine learning to detect rule-of-thirds compliance in images, building on earlier computational approaches to composition analysis. Read the study at ACM Digital Library.
Key Artists and Their Use of Off-Center Composition
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)
Vermeer's interior scenes use off-center placement consistently. The Milkmaid (c. 1657-1658) and Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) place subjects at or near the third lines of the canvas. Vermeer's compositions feel natural and unforced, which is partly the result of this off-center placement. The empty space in his paintings is not wasted. It creates a sense of quiet and room that a centered composition would not allow.
J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851)
Turner used the lower-third horizon in many seascapes to give the sky visual dominance. The Fighting Temeraire (1839) and Rain, Steam and Speed (1844, National Gallery, London) both place key elements at the third lines. Turner's use of off-center composition was not formulaic. He adjusted the placement to serve the emotional effect of each painting, sometimes placing the horizon lower than the third line for more dramatic sky effects.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
Degas used off-center composition aggressively, influenced by Japanese prints and photography. The Ballet Class (1871-1874, Musee d'Orsay) places the dance teacher at the left third of the canvas, with the dancers arranged in a diagonal that moves the eye from foreground to background. Degas cropped his compositions in ways that painting had not traditionally used, cutting figures at the edges and placing the center of action off to one side. This approach was controversial in his time but became standard in modern painting and photography.
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004)
Cartier-Bresson is the photographer most associated with compositional precision, though he explicitly rejected rigid formulas. His concept of the "decisive moment" was about timing, not geometry. But his photographs frequently place subjects at or near the third lines. Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare (1932) places the leaping figure at the left third of the frame, with the reflection in the water creating a second compositional layer. Cartier-Bresson's compositions feel inevitable rather than calculated, which is the goal of any compositional guideline used well.
Gregory Crewdson (born 1962)
Crewdson's staged photographs use cinematic composition that frequently follows the rule of thirds. Beneath the Roses (2003-2005) series places figures at third-line intersections, with the surrounding environment filling the rest of the frame. Crewdson's work demonstrates that the rule of thirds is not just a photography tip but a compositional principle that can support complex narrative imagery.
How to Apply the Rule of Thirds
To apply the rule of thirds, imagine a 3x3 grid over your frame. Most cameras and smartphones can display this grid in the viewfinder. Place your main subject at one of the four intersections. If your image has a horizon, place it on one of the horizontal lines. If the sky is the main subject, place the horizon on the lower line. If the land is the main subject, place the horizon on the upper line.
For portraits, place the subject's eyes at or near the upper third line. This positions the face in the upper portion of the frame, with the body filling the lower portion. For landscapes, place the horizon on a third line and look for a foreground element to place at a power point. This creates depth by giving the viewer a near, middle, and far element to look at.
Once you know the rule, practice breaking it. Centered compositions can be powerful when the subject is symmetrical or when you want to convey formality. Placing the subject at the edge of the frame can create tension or a sense of movement. The rule of thirds is a default, not a requirement. The best compositions are the ones that serve the image, whether or not they follow any rule. You can read more about compositional principles in our entries on composition and balance.
The rule of thirds is connected to several other compositional and proportional concepts. Composition is the broader arrangement of all elements in a work, of which the rule of thirds is one guideline. Golden ratio is a related proportional system that produces a similar off-center effect with a slightly different ratio. Balance is the visual equilibrium that the rule of thirds helps create through asymmetric placement. Emphasis is the principle of directing the viewer's attention, which the rule of thirds serves by specifying where to place the focal point. Proportion is the broader concept of size relationships, including the 1:2 ratio that the rule of thirds creates. Negative space is the area around the subject that the rule of thirds activates by moving the subject off-center. Practice the Rule of Thirds
Turn on the grid overlay on your phone's camera. Take ten photographs with the main subject placed at a power point. Then take ten photographs with the subject centered. Compare them. You will likely find that the off-center compositions feel more dynamic and the centered compositions feel more formal. Neither is better. The choice depends on what you want the image to communicate. The rule of thirds gives you a default. Knowing when to break it is what makes you a photographer or painter rather than a technician.
