That fragmentation, the way textured paper breaks a clean stroke into a dotted line, is the problem hot pressed paper solves. The surface is so smooth that a fine brush loaded with diluted paint will lay down a continuous line without interruption. Botanical illustrators, calligraphers, and realist watercolorists rely on this property. Without hot pressed paper, the precision of botanical art as we know it would not be possible.
Hot pressed paper is watercolor paper that has been pressed through heated metal rollers during manufacturing, producing a very smooth, hard surface with minimal texture. The heat and pressure compress the fibers tightly, creating a surface that feels almost slick. Paint sits on top of the surface longer than on textured papers, giving the painter more time to blend but also meaning that colors can appear less vibrant if the paint is applied too thinly. Hot pressed paper is one of three standard watercolor paper textures, alongside cold pressed and rough paper.

The manufacturing process determines the surface. After the paper pulp is formed into a sheet on a mold or wire screen, the wet sheet is pressed to remove water. For hot pressed paper, the sheet passes between heated metal rollers, sometimes called calenders, that apply both pressure and heat. The heat softens the fibers and the pressure compresses them flat. The result is a surface with almost no tooth. Run your fingertips across a sheet of hot pressed Arches and it feels like a sheet of fine vellum. Compare it to a sheet of cold pressed Arches and the difference is immediately apparent.
The degree of smoothness varies between manufacturers. Arches hot pressed is smooth but retains a slight, almost imperceptible grain. Fabriano Artistico hot pressed is similarly smooth. Some cheaper hot pressed papers can feel almost plastic-like, which makes them difficult to work with because the paint slides around without absorbing at all. The Blick Art Materials guide notes that hot pressed paper's smoothness means paint sits on the surface longer, allowing more control but less natural texture.
The smooth surface of hot pressed paper changes how watercolor behaves in three specific ways. First, paint sits on the surface longer because there are no valleys for the water to settle into. This gives you more time to blend and manipulate wet paint, which is useful for gradients and smooth transitions in botanical work. Second, because the paint does not sink into texture, colors can appear flatter or less vibrant compared to cold pressed paper, where pigment pools in the valleys and creates natural variation. Third, the smooth surface accepts fine lines and detail work without the broken strokes that textured paper causes.
The trade-off is control versus vibrancy. Hot pressed paper gives you precision but requires more skill to achieve the luminous, granulating effects that cold pressed paper produces naturally. Wet-on-wet techniques work differently on hot pressed paper. The paint spreads in a smooth, even film rather than granulating. For some subjects this is exactly what you want. For others, it looks flat and lifeless. The history of hot pressed paper is tied to the history of watercolor paper generally. James Whatman the Elder developed the wove surface at Turkey Mill in Maidstone, Kent, in the 1750s. Wove paper, made on a woven wire mold rather than a traditional laid mold, produced a smoother surface than laid paper. This was an early step toward the smooth surfaces that hot pressing would later perfect.
Botanical illustration drove the demand for smooth paper. In the 18th and 19th centuries, botanical artists like Pierre-Joseph Redouté and Franz Bauer produced works of extraordinary precision, documenting plant species for scientific and royal patrons. Redouté's Roses (1817-1824) and Liliaceae (1802-1816) contain watercolors of such fine detail that they could only have been executed on smooth paper. The smooth surface allowed Redouté to paint individual stamens, leaf veins, and petal edges with a precision that textured paper would have made impossible. In the 19th century, the development of cylinder mold machines by mills like Arches and Fabriano allowed for consistent production of smooth paper surfaces. The hot pressing process, running sheets through heated calenders, was refined during this period. By the early 20th century, hot pressed paper was a standard product available from all major European paper mills.
Botanical illustration is the tradition most dependent on hot pressed paper. The precision required to document plant species, with every stamen, pistil, and leaf vein accurately rendered, demands a smooth surface. Redouté (1759-1840), the most celebrated botanical illustrator, painted on smooth paper for his patron Empress Josephine at Malmaison. His contemporary Franz Bauer (1758-1840) was the first botanical artist employed at Kew Gardens, where he produced detailed watercolors on smooth paper that are still studied today. Modern botanical artists like Margaret Mee (1907-1988), who documented Amazonian flora, and Shirley Sherwood (born 1933), whose collection is housed at Kew, continue to work on hot pressed paper.
Realist watercolorists who work in fine detail also prefer hot pressed paper. Paul Cadden, a Scottish hyperrealist, uses hot pressed paper for his meticulously detailed watercolor drawings of urban scenes. The smooth surface allows him to render reflections, textures, and fine detail with a level of precision that cold pressed paper would disrupt.
Commercial illustrators, graphic designers, and calligraphers use hot pressed paper for its compatibility with pen, ink, and mixed media. The smooth surface accepts pen lines without feathering, and it works well with graphite, colored pencil, and light watercolor washes. The three watercolor paper textures exist on a spectrum from smooth to textured. Hot pressed is the smoothest, with almost no tooth. Cold pressed (also called Not) is in the middle, with a soft, pebbly texture created by pressing through cold felt rollers. Rough paper is the most textured, with heavy peaks and valleys from minimal pressing.
According to Dick Blick's research, cold press is the default for 80% of watercolor painters. Hot pressed is a specialty surface chosen when smoothness and precision matter more than natural texture and granulation. Rough is chosen when texture and expressive effects are the priority. Most professional watercolorists use cold pressed for general work and hot pressed for specific subjects that require fine detail.
Hot pressed paper behaves differently enough from cold pressed that it requires adjustment. Because paint sits on the surface longer, washes can be blended more smoothly, but they can also develop hard edges if the paint starts to dry unevenly. Work quickly on large areas and use a flat brush for even coverage. For fine detail, use a round brush with a good point. The smooth surface will hold the line without breaking.
Hot pressed paper is available in the same weights as other watercolor papers. 140 lb (300 gsm) is the standard, though the smooth surface can feel stiffer than cold pressed at the same weight.
