Rag Paper: Cotton-Based Paper That Lasts for Centuries

Hold a sheet of rag paper next to a sheet of ordinary wood pulp paper and the difference is physical. The rag paper feels thicker, stronger, more flexible. Tear a corner off each and the rag paper resists, stretching before it gives, while the wood pulp paper snaps cleanly. Dip a corner of each in water and the rag paper holds together, wet and intact, while the wood pulp paper starts to dissolve. These are not subtle differences. They are the reason that documents from the 15th century, printed on rag paper, are still readable today, while newspapers from the 1950s, printed on wood pulp paper, crumble when you touch them.

Rag paper is paper made from cotton or linen rags, rather than wood pulp. The term "rag" refers to the raw material: discarded textiles, rope, and fabric scraps that were beaten into pulp and formed into sheets. What Is Rag Paper and Why Does It Last?

The longevity of rag paper comes down to chemistry. Cotton and linen fibers are nearly pure cellulose with very little lignin. Lignin is the natural polymer that binds wood fibers together in trees, and it is the enemy of paper permanence. When lignin is present in paper, it breaks down over time through oxidation, producing acids that yellow the paper and make it brittle. This is why old newspapers turn yellow and crack. Wood pulp paper, even after processing to remove lignin, retains enough of it to degrade over decades.

Cotton fibers, by contrast, contain almost no lignin naturally. Cotton is about 95% cellulose, which is chemically stable and does not produce acidic byproducts as it ages. Linen, made from flax, is similarly high in cellulose and low in lignin. Paper made from these fibers, if properly sized and stored, can last for centuries without significant deterioration. A 2023 study published in Carbohydrate Polymers analyzed historical rag papers and found that they had higher crystallinity than wood pulp papers, contributing to their durability. The study also found that historical rag papers had lower hemicellulose and pectin content than modern wood pulps, which relates to their condition and longevity. The wiki explains that rags were used because the value of raw fibers for textiles put them beyond the means of papermakers. History and Origins

China and the Silk Road (2nd-8th centuries)

The invention of rag paper is attributed to Cai Lun around 106 AD in Luoyang, China, when he beat hemp and ramie rags with rope scraps and paper mulberry fibers into pulp. Dunhuang and Turfan were major centers of rag paper production in the first millennium, possibly because their desert environment incentivized rag reuse over mulberry paper production. Rag paper production declined in China after the 10th century due to the rising cost of textiles. The Islamic World (8th-11th centuries)

Rag paper spread to the Islamic world through the Silk Road before the 8th century. Baghdad became a major production center. Arab papermakers developed "pure" rag paper made entirely from linen rags, which supplanted papyrus and parchment for most uses by the 11th century. The technology spread to Al-Andalus by the mid-10th century, with the Spanish city of Xàtiva becoming a major production center of linen rag paper by the 11th century.

Europe (12th-19th centuries)

Rag paper reached Christian Europe by the 12th century through Mediterranean trade. Amalfi paper was a significant Italian rag paper by the early 13th century. Following the invention of the printing press in the 15th century, paper demand surged, and rag shortages became a recurring problem. Paper mills in Italy, Holland, and later England competed for limited rag supplies. The Industrial Revolution made Western Europe the dominant rag paper producer, with urban ragpickers and industrial textile production providing ample raw material.

In England, the Whatman mill at Turkey Mill in Kent, established in the 1750s, produced some of the finest rag paper for watercolor and printing. James Whatman the Elder developed the wove surface, which produced paper without the ribbed pattern of traditional laid molds. Whatman paper was used by J.M.W. Turner and other English watercolorists.

The Shift to Wood Pulp (mid-19th century)

The invention of the rotary printing press in 1844 and the rise of mass literacy increased paper demand beyond what rag supplies could meet. In the 1850s, processes were developed to make paper from wood pulp, which was cheaper and more abundant than rags. Wood pulp paper rapidly displaced rag paper for newspapers, books, and commercial printing. However, the archival properties of wood pulp paper were dramatically inferior. Documents printed on wood pulp paper from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are now brittle and disintegrating, while documents printed on rag paper from the same period remain in good condition.

Rag paper survived as a specialty product for applications where permanence mattered: legal documents, currency, fine art paper, and conservation materials. U.S. currency is still printed on paper made from cotton and linen rags, manufactured by Crane and Company since the 19th century.

Rag Paper in Art

Watercolor Paper

The most common use of rag paper in art today is watercolor paper. Professional watercolor paper from brands like Arches, Fabriano Artistico, and Saunders Waterford is made from 100% cotton. The cotton fibers provide the strength and absorbency that watercolor requires, and the archival quality ensures that finished paintings will last for centuries if properly stored. Printmaking

Rag paper is also the standard for fine art printmaking. Etchings, lithographs, and screen prints are printed on cotton rag paper because it can withstand the pressure of the printing press without tearing and will not yellow or deteriorate over time. Drawing and Pastel

Rag paper is used for drawing and pastel work where archival quality is important. Some pastel papers, like those made by Hahnemuhle and Fabriano, use cotton rag bases with textured coatings that grip pastel pigment.

Conservation and Restoration

Conservators use rag paper for repairing and backing damaged documents and artworks. Japanese washi paper, made from kozo fibers, is also used in conservation, and the thinness and strength of both rag and washi papers make them ideal for this purpose. How Rag Paper Is Made Today

Modern rag paper is made from cotton linters, which are the short fibers left on cotton seeds after the long fibers have been removed for textile production. Some mills still use fabric scraps from textile factories. The AIC wiki notes that only a few handmade paper mills use rag cuttings today because large-scale rag collection no longer exists. These mills use 100% natural-fiber fabric scraps obtained from textile mills and clothing factories, and more often, cotton linters.

The manufacturing process involves beating the fibers in water to separate and fibrillate them, forming the pulp into sheets on a mold or machine, pressing the sheets to remove water, and drying. The beating process is important. Traditional stamp mills rubbed and frayed the long fibers, spreading them and creating strong inter-fiber bonds. The Hollander beater, introduced in the 1600s, chops fibers into shorter lengths, producing paper that is less strong than stamp-milled paper but faster to make. The AIC wiki notes that paper made from Hollander-beaten fibers is shorter-fibered, less fibrillated, and potentially weaker and less durable than stamp-milled paper.

Rag Paper vs. Wood Pulp Paper

The difference between rag paper and wood pulp paper is the difference between archival and disposable. Rag paper, made from cotton or linen, is chemically stable and lasts for centuries. Wood pulp paper, made from tree fibers, contains lignin that causes yellowing and deterioration. Even acid-free wood pulp paper, which has been treated to remove lignin and neutralize acids, is not as durable as cotton rag paper.

For any artwork intended to last, rag paper is the only sensible choice. For practice and sketching, wood pulp paper is acceptable. The price difference is significant: a sheet of 100% cotton rag watercolor paper costs several dollars, while a sheet of wood pulp paper costs cents. But the archival difference is measured in centuries.
