The Riace Bronzes, two life-size Greek warriors pulled from the Mediterranean Sea in 1972, are among the most spectacular bronze sculptures ever found. They were made around 460 BCE using the lost-wax method, a process already ancient by that time. The figures stand over six feet tall, their muscles and facial features rendered with a precision that seems impossible for metal cast in a mold. The fact that a technique developed thousands of years earlier could produce work of this sophistication tells you something about the power and longevity of lost-wax casting.
Lost-wax casting, also called cire perdue (French for "lost wax"), is a metal casting process in which a sculpture is modeled in wax, encased in a heat-resistant mold, and then heated until the wax melts and drains out. Molten metal is poured into the resulting cavity, filling the space the wax occupied. When the metal cools, the mold is broken away, revealing the finished sculpture. The technique has been used for over 6,000 years, from the earliest copper ornaments of the Chalcolithic period to contemporary bronze foundries. It is the primary method for casting bronze sculpture, capable of capturing the finest detail of the artist's model.

There are two main variants: direct casting and indirect casting. In direct casting, the artist's original wax model is destroyed during the process. In indirect casting, a mold is made from the original model, and a wax copy is produced from that mold for casting, preserving the original.
The sculptor models the figure in beeswax, sometimes over a clay core for larger works. Wax rods called sprues are attached to the model to create channels for metal flow and air escape. The entire assembly is coated in layers of refractory clay, starting with a fine liquid slip that captures surface detail and building up to coarser layers for structural strength. The clay mold is dried and then heated in a furnace. The wax melts and pours out through the sprue channels, leaving a hollow cavity in the exact shape of the original model. Molten bronze is poured into the cavity through one sprue while air escapes through the others. After cooling, the clay mold is broken away, the sprues are cut off, and the bronze surface is finished by chasing, filing, and polishing.

Indirect casting solves the problem of losing the original model. A mold is made from the sculptor's original, usually in plaster or clay. From this mold, a hollow wax copy is produced. The wax copy is then sprued, invested in clay, and cast as in the direct method. Because the original model survives, the process can be repeated to produce multiple casts, and large sculptures can be cast in sections and assembled. The earliest sculptor known to have routinely used indirect casting was Antico of Mantua (c. 1460-1528), whose small bronzes show total mastery of the technique.
Bronze cannot be solid-cast in large sizes because the metal shrinks as it cools, and large solid castings crack. For life-size and monumental sculpture, the Greeks developed hollow lost-wax casting. A clay core is built up over an iron armature, coated with a layer of wax, and then encased in an outer clay mold. When the wax is melted out, the gap between the inner core and outer mold becomes the casting cavity. The resulting bronze is a thin shell, typically 3-10 mm thick, which is lighter and less likely to crack than a solid casting.
The oldest known lost-wax castings are gold artifacts found at the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria, dated to approximately 4550-4450 BCE. A copper amulet from Mehrgarh in present-day Pakistan, dated to around 4000 BCE, is the oldest known copper object cast by lost-wax. The Nahal Mishmar hoard in southern Israel, dated to around 3700 BCE, contains over 400 copper objects made by lost-wax casting. These findings, documented in academic studies of archaeometallurgy, push the origins of the technique back to the Chalcolithic period, earlier than previously assumed.
By 3500 BCE, Sumerian metalworkers in Mesopotamia were casting small copper and bronze figures using lost-wax. One of the earliest surviving examples is a small lion pendant from Uruk IV. In the Indus Valley, the "Dancing Girl" of Mohenjo-daro, dated to 2300-1750 BCE, is a lost-wax bronze casting that shows remarkable sophistication for its age. The Dhokra metalworkers of eastern India continue to practice a direct lost-wax tradition that may descend from these ancient practices.
The Greeks adopted lost-wax casting for large-scale bronze statuary by the Late Archaic period (c. 500-480 BCE). Before that, large bronze figures were made by sphyrelaton, hammering sheets of bronze over wooden forms and riveting them together. Lost-wax casting allowed for far more complex and naturalistic figures. The Riace Bronzes (c. 460 BCE), the Artemision Zeus or Poseidon (c. 460 BCE), and the Delphi Charioteer (c. 470 BCE) are all products of hollow lost-wax casting. Renaissance sculptors revived large-scale bronze casting, using both direct and indirect methods. The earliest known regular use of indirect casting in the Renaissance was by Antico of Mantua. Donatello's David (c. 1440s), the first freestanding nude sculpture since antiquity, was cast in bronze by the lost-wax method. Andrea del Verrocchio's Colleoni Monument (c. 1480-1488) in Venice pushed the scale of lost-wax casting to monumental equestrian proportions.
The most famous Renaissance bronze is Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa (c. 1554), cast in Florence. Cellini described the casting in his autobiography, giving us one of the few first-person accounts of a Renaissance lost-wax pour. He used the direct method, modeling the figure in wax and clay over an armature, and the casting nearly failed when the furnace overheated. Cellini's account conveys the drama and risk of the process.
Donatello's bronze David (c. 1440s) was the first freestanding nude sculpture cast in bronze since antiquity. The figure stands with a relaxed contrapposto, one hand on his hip, the other holding the sword that has just severed Goliath's head. The casting demonstrates that Renaissance foundries had recovered the technical capacity for complex hollow casting that had been lost in the Middle Ages.
Verrocchio's equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni in Venice (c. 1480-1488) is one of the largest bronze sculptures of the Renaissance. The horse and rider were cast in sections using the indirect method and assembled on site. The technical challenge of casting a rearing, muscular horse at this scale was enormous, and the success of the project established Venice as a center of bronze casting.
Cellini's Perseus (c. 1554) in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence is the most technically ambitious bronze of the 16th century. The figure of Perseus holds the severed head of Medusa in one hand, his other arm raised, one leg bent. The composition is structurally complex, with thin bronze supports hidden in the design. Cellini cast it in a single pour using the direct method, a feat that his autobiography describes with dramatic intensity.
The Dutch sculptor Adriaen de Vries, working in Prague, used the direct lost-wax method for his Juggling Man (c. 1610). The Getty Center has documented his process in detail, showing how de Vries built an iron armature, coated it with clay and wax, and cast the figure in a single pour. His willingness to risk the direct method, when indirect casting offered a safer alternative, speaks to his confidence and ambition. Read more at Getty.
Rodin used the indirect lost-wax method to cast his bronze sculptures from plaster and clay originals. The Thinker (original c. 1880, enlarged 1904) was cast in bronze using the sand casting method for the large version, but many of Rodin's smaller works were cast by lost-wax. Rodin's foundry, the Alexis Rudier foundry and later the Georges Rudier foundry, produced casts from his plaster models throughout his career and posthumously.
Lost-wax casting is the primary method for casting bronze sculpture. It is related to other casting processes that use clay and wax as modeling materials. The technique connects to modeling, since the wax original is modeled by hand, and to carving, since wax can also be carved. The finished bronze often receives a patina, a chemical treatment that colors the surface. Repousse is an alternative metalworking technique that shapes sheet metal by hammering rather than casting.

When you look at a cast bronze, look for the seams where sections were joined, the areas where sprues were cut away and filed smooth, and the surface patina. On direct casts, you can sometimes see the fingerprints of the sculptor preserved in the wax model and translated into bronze.
