In 2024, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened an exhibition called We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art. The title is literal. Mesoamerican artists adorned the surfaces of buildings, clay vessels, textiles, bark-paper pages, and sculptures with color, and by doing so, they believed they were making the world. Color mapped the order of the cosmos, of time and space. The exhibition followed two lines of inquiry: technical analysis of pigments, and Indigenous conceptions of art and image. It argued that histories of colonialism and industrialization in the "color-averse" West had minimized the deep significance of color in the Indigenous Americas. The show included over 250 objects spanning 3,000 years, many rarely or never seen before in the United States, with major loans from the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia in Mexico.

Rockefeller Wing in May 2025 after a multiyear renovation, with nearly 700 items representing the artistic legacy of Indigenous artists from across the Americas before 1600 CE. Pre-Columbian art is conventionally divided into two major regions: Mesoamerica and the Andes. Mesoamerica covers central and southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. The Andes covers the Pacific coast and highlands of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and parts of Chile and Colombia. Each region produced distinct artistic traditions, though there were trade contacts and cultural exchanges between them.
A key concept in Pre-Columbian art is that the objects were not "art" in the Western sense. They were functional objects used in ritual, political, and social contexts. A Maya ceramic vessel was used for drinking cacao during ceremonies. An Aztec stone sculpture was placed in a temple or at a sacred site. An Inca textile was worn as a garment or offered as a tribute. The Western category of "art" was imposed on these objects by collectors and museums, and recent scholarship has worked to restore their original cultural contexts.
The Olmec were the first major civilization of Mesoamerica, based in the Gulf Coast region of Mexico. Their art is known for colossal stone heads, some over nine feet tall and weighing 20 tons, carved from basalt. The heads are portraits of individual rulers, each with distinctive facial features and helmet-like headgear. The Olmec also produced small jade figurines and celts with were-jaguar imagery, combining human and feline features. The Olmec style established conventions that influenced all later Mesoamerican art.
Teotihuacan, located northeast of Mexico City, was one of the largest cities in the ancient world, with a population of over 100,000. Its art is characterized by mural painting, ceramic sculpture, and architectural monumentality. The Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon dominate the city's layout. The Teotihuacan mural tradition includes depictions of the Storm God (Tlaloc), feathered serpents, and processional figures rendered in flat, stylized forms with bright mineral pigments. The 2025 LACMA exhibition included mural fragments from Teotihuacan, showing how color was engineered from natural materials to map the cosmic order.
The Maya civilization, spanning southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras, produced the most sophisticated visual culture of ancient Mesoamerica. Maya art includes monumental stone sculpture (stelae depicting rulers), ceramic vessels with painted scenes, jade masks, and codices. The Aztec Empire, centered at Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico City), was the last great Mesoamerican civilization before Spanish contact. Aztec art is known for monumental stone sculpture, including the Coatlicue statue (c. 1500, National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City), a nearly nine-foot-tall sculpture of the earth goddess with a skirt of snakes, a necklace of human hearts and hands, and a head formed by two serpents. The Sun Stone (c. 1500), often called the Aztec Calendar Stone, is a 12-foot basalt disk carved with the Aztec cosmological system. The Met's 2025 reinstallation of its Rockefeller Wing includes bold imperial styles of the Mexica, one of the two largest empires of the ancient Americas.
The Mixtec people of Oaxaca produced painted manuscripts called codices, which are among the few surviving Pre-Columbian books. The Codex Laud, held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, is a book of divination made from bark paper (amate) with painted figures and calendrical symbols. The 2025 Nelson-Atkins Museum exhibition Painted Worlds: Color and Culture in Mesoamerican Art provided a rare close-up look at the Codex Laud, one of only about 15 surviving texts that predate Spanish colonization, made newly accessible through tactile and digital experiences. The Chavin culture, based in the northern highlands of Peru, produced stone sculpture and goldwork that established conventions for Andean art. The Lanzon, a granite sculpture of a feline-human deity housed in a temple at Chavin de Huantar, is the most important Chavin object. Chavin art uses abstract, geometric forms to depict supernatural beings with feline, avian, and human features.
The Nasca culture of the southern coast of Peru is famous for the Nasca Lines, vast geoglyphs etched into the desert pampa. The lines depict animals, plants, and geometric forms, some up to 1,000 feet long. The 2025 Blanton Museum exhibition Between Mountains and Sea: Arts of the Ancient Andes noted that among various possible functions, these immense earthworks may have indicated regions possessing or void of underground water channels. The Moche culture of the northern coast of Peru produced the most naturalistic ceramic art of the ancient Andes. Moche ceramicists blended modeling, mold-making, painting, and relief to illustrate dramatic scenes of warfare, sacrifice, agricultural production, and fertility. Moche portrait vessels depict individual male warriors with such specificity that identifiable species of plants and animals have sparked great scholarly interest. The Moche also conceived of beings with attributes combining the human and non-human, such as the "Crab-Being" featured in the Blanton exhibition.
The Inca Empire, centered at Cusco in the Peruvian highlands, was the largest empire of pre-Columbian America, stretching from Ecuador to Chile. Inca art is known for its monumental stone architecture (Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuaman), its textile tradition, and its gold and silver work. Inca stonework uses precisely cut blocks fitted together without mortar, with surfaces so tight that a blade cannot be inserted between them. The Met's 2025 reinstallation includes a gallery dedicated to ancient Andean textiles, the first of its kind in the United States, with intricately woven garments and hangings, some over 2,000 years old, shown in state-of-the-art casework with periodic rotation of light-sensitive textiles and featherworks.
The Olmec Colossal Head 1 from San Lorenzo (c. 1200-900 BCE, Museo de Antropologia de Xalapa) is a basalt head over eight feet tall, carved with a ruler's individualized facial features. The head was transported over 80 miles from the quarry to the site, a feat that required enormous labor and organization. The surface shows the ruler wearing a helmet, possibly a ballgame protective device or a symbol of rulership.
The Maya Mask of the Sun God Kinich Ahau (c. 600-900 CE, tomb of Pakal at Palenque) is a jade mosaic mask found in the tomb of the Maya ruler K'inich Janaab' Pakal. The mask is made of over 200 jade fragments fitted together, with eyes made of shell and obsidian. Jade was the most precious material in Mesoamerica, more valuable than gold, and the mask represents the ruler in the guise of the sun god.
The Aztec Coatlicue statue (c. 1500, National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City) is a nearly nine-foot-tall stone sculpture of the earth goddess. The figure has a head formed by two serpents, a necklace of human hearts and hands, a skirt of snakes, and clawed feet. The sculpture is simultaneously terrifying and mathematically precise, with a bilateral symmetry that organizes the chaotic imagery into a coherent composition.
The Moche Portrait Head Vessel (c. 400-600 CE) shows a male warrior's face with such individualized features that scholars have identified the same person across multiple vessels. The Moche achieved a level of portraiture that was not matched in the Andes until the Spanish colonial period. The vessels were made using two-piece molds, allowing for production of multiple copies, but the portrait heads were individually finished.
An Inca uncu (man's tunic, c. 1450-1532 CE) is a woven garment with geometric patterns called tocapu, which may encode information about rank, territory, or identity. Inca textiles were made from the finest vicuna and alpaca wool, and the weaving technique, using a backstrap loom, produced fabrics of extraordinary density and fineness. The Met's new Andean textile gallery displays these garments with controlled lighting to preserve the fragile fibers.
Pre-Columbian art spans at least 3,000 years, from the earliest Olmec monuments (c. 1200 BCE) to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521 and the Inca Empire in 1532. The major periods in Mesoamerica are the Preclassic (2000 BCE to 250 CE), Classic (250-900 CE), and Postclassic (900-1521 CE). In the Andes, the periods are the Early Horizon (900-200 BCE), Early Intermediate (200 BCE to 600 CE), Middle Horizon (600-1000 CE), Late Intermediate (1000-1470 CE), and Late Horizon (1470-1532 CE).
