Michelangelo said that every block of stone contains a statue, and that the sculptor's job is to discover it by removing what does not belong. Whether he actually said this or not, the sentiment captures the essence of carving. You start with a solid block and you take material away. You cannot add it back. Every cut is permanent, every mistake is visible, and the finished form exists as a presence hidden inside the material, waiting to be released. This is what makes carving the most demanding and the most direct of all sculptural processes.
Carving is a subtractive sculptural technique in which the artist removes material from a solid block to reveal a three-dimensional form. The materials carved include stone (marble, limestone, sandstone, alabaster), wood (oak, limewood, walnut, boxwood), ivory, bone, and various synthetic materials. Carving is the oldest sculptural method, with examples dating back to the Paleolithic period. It requires different tools for different materials: chisels and mallets for stone, gouges and knives for wood, and small burins for ivory and bone. Unlike modeling, which builds up form by adding material, carving can only subtract. This one-way process demands that the sculptor plan the form in advance and work with the grain, flaws, and physical properties of the specific block.

What Is Carving and How Does It Work?
Carving begins with the selection of a block. The sculptor studies the material for flaws, grain direction, and natural shape. Some carvers, following Michelangelo's philosophy, let the block suggest the form. Others work from a prepared model, using calipers or a pointing machine to transfer measurements from the model to the block.
Stone Carving
Stone carving proceeds in stages. The roughing-out stage uses a point chisel, a steel rod with a pointed tip, struck with a hammer or mallet to knock off large chunks of unwanted stone. A pitching tool, with a broad flat edge, splits the stone along natural fracture lines. Once the general form is established, a toothed chisel (also called a claw chisel) removes material more precisely, leaving parallel grooves that can be smoothed. Flat chisels refine the surface, and rasps and rifflers, metal tools with rough surfaces, smooth it further. For final polishing, abrasives like pumice or emery are rubbed against the stone until the surface achieves the desired sheen.
The Victoria and Albert Museum documents that stone-carving tools have remained largely unchanged since antiquity. Marble and alabaster can be polished with pumice to a smooth, translucent surface, while coarser stones like sandstone are typically left with a textured finish. Read more at V&A.
Wood Carving
Wood is carved with different tools. The design is drawn on a split tree-trunk or board. A broad axe roughs out the form, then flat chisels, gouges, and skew-bladed firmers refine it. A firmer is a chisel with a hooked end designed for cutting folds in drapery. Wood must be carved with attention to the grain: cutting against the grain causes tearing and splintering, while cutting with the grain produces clean surfaces. The heartwood at the center of the log is removed if possible, because it is prone to cracking as the wood dries. After carving, the surface is smoothed with sandpaper or abrasives and may be painted, gilded, or left natural.
The choice of wood was traditionally regional. In southern Germany, limewood was favored for its soft, even texture. Oak was used in northern Germany, the Netherlands, northern France, and England. Walnut was preferred in France. In Italy, Spain, and Alpine regions, poplar and pine were common.
Origins and History
Paleolithic Carving
The earliest carved sculptures date from the Upper Paleolithic period, approximately 40,000 to 10,000 BCE. The Venus of Willendorf (c. 25,000 BCE), a small limestone figure of a female form, is one of the most famous. The faceless Cycladic figurines of the Aegean (c. 3300-1100 BCE), carved from marble with simple geometric forms, represent a later development. A 2024 study in PLOS One experimentally replicated Paleolithic bas-relief carving techniques, finding that pecking and engraving leave distinctive traces while scraping and polishing produce overlapping surface signatures. Ancient Egypt and Greece
Egyptian sculptors carved limestone, sandstone, and harder stones like granite and diorite using copper and bronze tools with abrasive sand. The seated scribe statues and the colossal statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel demonstrate the range of scale and finish possible in carved stone. Greek sculptors developed marble carving to its highest refinement. The Parthenon sculptures (c. 447-432 BCE), carved from Pentelic marble under the direction of Phidias, show drapery, anatomy, and expression with a precision that has never been surpassed. The Venus de Milo (c. 130-100 BCE), carved from Parian marble, demonstrates the translucency that makes marble the preferred material for figurative sculpture.
The Renaissance
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) transformed marble carving from a craft into a performance of individual genius. His David (1501-1504), carved from a single block of Carrara marble that had been abandoned by two previous sculptors, stands 17 feet tall. Michelangelo carved it in approximately two years, working from a wax model and using the direct carving method. His Pieta (1498-1499) in St. Peter's Basilica shows a surface finish so polished that the marble appears to have skin-like translucency. Michelangelo's Slaves (c. 1513-1534), a series of unfinished figures emerging from blocks of marble, deliberately expose the carving process, showing how the sculptor worked from the front toward the back, releasing the figure from the stone.
Beyond Europe
Carving traditions exist in every culture with access to hard materials. African wood carving, particularly the masks and figures of West and Central Africa, influenced European modernists including Picasso and Matisse. Japanese wood carving reached extraordinary refinement in the Heian and Kamakura periods, with sculptors like Unkei (c. 1151-1224) producing wooden figures with crystal eyes and painted surfaces. The Maori of New Zealand developed jade carving traditions that produce intricate hei-tiki pendants and weapons. Pre-Columbian cultures in Mesoamerica carved jade, obsidian, and volcanic stone with techniques that did not use metal tools but relied on abrasion with harder stones.
Key Sculptors
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
Michelangelo is the sculptor most associated with marble carving. His David (1501-1504), Pieta (1498-1499), Moses (c. 1513-1515), and the Slaves series demonstrate a range from polished finish to deliberately rough stone. Michelangelo claimed to carve without models, working directly from the image in his mind, though evidence suggests he used wax sketches and drawings. His unfinished works are as instructive as his finished ones, showing the sequence of roughing out, refining, and polishing.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)
Bernini brought marble carving to a level of virtuosity that still astonishes. His Apollo and Daphne (1622-1625) in the Galleria Borghese shows Daphne's fingers turning into leaves, her bark forming around her body, all carved from a single block of marble. The Rape of Proserpina (1621-1622) shows Pluto's fingers pressing into Proserpina's thigh, the marble rendered with a softness that seems to defy the material's hardness. Bernini's carving pushed the illusion of flesh, fabric, and movement further than any sculptor before or since.
Tilman Riemenschneider (c. 1460-1531)
Riemenschneider was the master of late Gothic wood carving in Germany. His altarpieces, including the Altarpiece of the Holy Blood (1501-1505) in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, show figures carved in limewood with a precision and emotional directness that bypasses the ornate quality of much Gothic sculpture. Riemenschneider often left his wood unpainted, a radical choice at a time when polychrome finishing was standard, allowing the carving itself to carry the expression.
Henry Moore (1898-1986)
Moore carved directly in stone and wood, following the doctrine of "truth to materials" promoted by his teacher Eric Gill. Moore's Reclining Figure (1929), carved in Hornton stone, shows the influence of pre-Columbian Mexican sculpture and the Chacmool form. Moore believed that direct carving, without a pointing machine or assistants, produced a more honest relationship between sculptor and material.
Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975)
Hepworth, like Moore, practiced direct carving. Her Single Form (1961-1962), a bronze cast from a carved prototype, stands outside the United Nations in New York. Her carved works in wood and stone, such as Pelagos (1946), show strings pulled taut across carved curves, combining carving with tension to create forms that reference landscape and the human body simultaneously.
Carving is one of the three fundamental sculptural methods, alongside modeling (additive, using soft materials) and assemblage (constructive, combining found objects). The subtractive nature of carving means that mistakes cannot be corrected by adding material, making it the least forgiving of the three. Carving connects to lost-wax casting, since carved sculptures can serve as models for bronze casts, and to marble and clay as material references. The woodcut and wood engraving printmaking techniques also involve carving, though into blocks rather than sculptural forms.

When you look at a carved sculpture, look for tool marks. On unfinished or partially finished works, you can see the progression from point chisel marks to toothed chisel grooves to smooth surfaces. On marble, look for the slight translucency at the edges of forms, where light penetrates the surface before refracting back.
