In the 1780s, a French painter named Pierre Henri de Valenciennes walked out to the bank of the river Rance in Brittany and painted what he saw. Not a sketch to take back to the studio. Not a compositional study to be worked up later. He painted a finished oil landscape on location, standing in front of the actual trees, water, and sky. This was not how painters worked. Landscapes were composed in studios from drawings and memory. Painting outdoors was something you did to gather material, not to make finished work. Valenciennes disagreed, and his The Banks of the Rance, Brittany is one of the earliest known plein air excursions in European art.
Plein air is the practice of painting outdoors, directly from the subject in front of you, rather than working from memory or studio sketches. The French phrase "en plein air" means "in the open air." The technique is defined not by a method of paint application but by a condition of practice: the painter works on location, responding to the actual light, atmosphere, and weather of the moment. Plein air is frequently associated with alla prima and wet-on-wet techniques because outdoor conditions force painters to work quickly, but plein air itself refers to the location, not the method.
This entry covers how plein air emerged, what made it technically possible, which artists defined it, and how to recognize plein air work when you see it in a museum.
Plein air painting is defined by its relationship to its subject. A studio painter translates a scene through memory, drawings, and compositional decisions made away from the source. A plein air painter responds to the scene in real time, with the actual light, color, and atmosphere present in the moment of painting. This creates a different kind of work: more immediate, more responsive to changing conditions, and often more optically accurate in terms of color and light.
The practice matters because it changed what paintings looked like. Before plein air became common, landscapes were idealized compositions built from studio studies. The colors were muted, the light was generalized, and the compositions followed academic formulas. Plein air painting introduced specific, observed light and color into landscape painting. The shimmering surfaces and broken color of Impressionism are direct consequences of painting outdoors, where the painter must capture fleeting effects before they change.
A 2024 comparative study published in TOJDAC examined the relationship between alla prima and plein air, finding that the two practices "frequently converge in visual outcome while remaining distinct in their technical and conceptual foundations." The study argues that plein air is a "situational practice, shaped by environmental exposure and the variability of natural light, atmosphere, and weather," while alla prima is a "material procedure, structured around the wet-in-wet manipulation of oil paint." The overlap occurs because outdoor painting often necessitates wet-on-wet application. Read the study at TOJDAC.
The conceptual foundations of plein air predate its 19th-century association with Impressionism. As the art historian Radisich has demonstrated in her analysis of 18th-century landscape painting, outdoor oil sketches were already understood as purposeful studies executed directly before nature. In the writings and pedagogical practice of Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, artists were encouraged to produce multiple studies of the same motif under differing conditions of illumination, acknowledging that natural light could not be replicated from one moment to the next. Valenciennes published his treatise Advice to a Student on Painting, Particularly on Landscape in 1800, arguing that the landscape painter "raising nature to a plane beyond itself, conveys profound and delightful sensations to our souls."
By the early 19th century, the practice of sketching outdoors had spread. John Constable returned again and again to the Suffolk countryside where he had grown up, painting plein air studies of the fields, skies, and mills around his father's property. His cloud studies from the 1820s, painted on Hampstead Heath with annotations of weather conditions and time of day, are among the most direct plein air studies in European art. Constable's studio paintings, like The Hay Wain (1821, National Gallery, London), draw on the optical accuracy of these outdoor studies.
The Barbizon School took plein air further. Theodore Rousseau, Jean-Francois Millet, and Charles-Francois Daubigny worked in the Forest of Fontainebleau, south of Paris, painting directly from nature. Rousseau's devotion to the forest extended to activism: he successfully petitioned Napoleon III to save the trees from logging. The Barbizon painters made plein air a way of life, not just a study method.
The technical breakthrough that made plein air practical for large numbers of painters was the invention of the paint tube. John G. Rand, an American painter working in London, patented the collapsible tin paint tube in 1841. Before Rand's invention, painters stored paint in animal bladders, which were messy, prone to bursting, and difficult to transport. The tin tube was portable, sealed, and kept paint workable for weeks. Renoir later said: "Without paint in tubes there would have been nothing of what the journalists were later to call Impressionists."
A 2025 study published in the Storia della Critica d'Arte journal reexamined plein air painting between Rome and Paris in the early 19th century, arguing that the outdoor "etudes" produced during this period were not merely study materials but "truly autonomous works capable of launching the success of the veduta that would gradually replace the traditional classicist landscape." The study traces how these small oils on paper or canvas, painted directly from nature, entered the art market and collecting circles as early as the beginning of the 19th century. Valenciennes is the father of plein air as a practice. His The Banks of the Rance, Brittany (1780s, Musee des Beaux-Arts, Rennes) is one of the earliest known finished oil paintings made outdoors. He taught his students to paint multiple studies of the same view under different light conditions, a practice that directly influenced the Impressionists' series approach decades later.
Constable's plein air studies of the Suffolk countryside and Hampstead Heath are the foundation of his studio work. His cloud studies from 1821-1822, painted outdoors with notes on weather and time, are remarkable for their specificity. The Hay Wain (1821, National Gallery, London) translates the optical accuracy of these studies into a finished studio composition.
Monet is the painter most associated with plein air. His Impression, Sunrise (1872, Musee Marmottan Monet, Paris), which gave Impressionism its name, was painted from a window overlooking the harbor at Le Havre. His series paintings, the Haystacks (1890-1891), Rouen Cathedral (1892-1894), and Water Lilies (1896-1926), were all begun on location. Monet would work on multiple canvases simultaneously, switching from one to another as the light changed.
Pissarro was the most consistent plein air painter among the Impressionists. He worked outdoors throughout his career, even in old age when he had to paint from a window due to an eye condition. His Hoarfrost at Ennery (1873, Musee d'Orsay, Paris) was painted on location and shows the specific, observed light of a winter morning.
Sargent used plein air for both landscapes and figure paintings. Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-1886, Tate, London) was painted outdoors in the Cotswolds, with Sargent working during the brief period each evening when the light was right. The painting took two years to complete because he could only work for a few minutes each day.
Plein air paintings have identifiable characteristics. They tend to be smaller than studio compositions, because they had to be portable. The brushwork is often more direct and less finished, because the painter was working against changing light. The colors are more specific and optically accurate, capturing a particular moment rather than a generalized ideal. And the compositions are often simpler, because the painter did not have time to build complex arrangements on location.
In the Musee d'Orsay, compare Monet's plein air studies with his larger studio works. The studies are looser, smaller, and more direct. The studio works are more composed but draw their color and light from the outdoor studies. In the National Gallery in London, look at Constable's cloud studies alongside The Hay Wain. The studies are pure observation. The finished painting is a composition built from that observation.
Plein air work also tends to show broken color and visible brushwork, because the painter was applying paint directly and quickly rather than building up smooth, blended layers in the studio. The surface of a plein air painting is a record of decisions made in real time, under pressure from changing conditions.
Plein air is closely associated with alla prima painting, because outdoor conditions often require completing a painting in a single session. Wet-on-wet technique is frequently used in plein air work for the same reason. Broken color is the characteristic surface of plein air painting, as painters lay down pure color directly to capture observed light. The technique connects to the broader tradition of chiaroscuro in its attention to light, though plein air is concerned with observed natural light rather than theatrical or constructed lighting.

Plein air paintings are best understood as a group, because the practice produced a recognizable type of work: small, direct, optically specific. Start with Constable's cloud studies at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which show plein air observation at its most pure. Then go to the Musee d'Orsay in Paris for the Impressionist galleries, where Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley show what plein air became when it was elevated from study method to finished work. End at the Tate in London with Sargent's Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, which shows how plein air could be used for figure painting as well as landscape.
If you want to understand why plein air changed painting, stand in front of a Monet landscape and a 17th-century Italian landscape in the same museum. The Italian painting will show an idealized, composed view with generalized light. The Monet will show a specific moment, with specific colors and specific atmospheric conditions. That difference is what plein air brought to Western painting.
