What Is Orientalism?
Orientalism has two meanings. In art history, it refers to the body of Western artworks depicting the East, produced primarily between 1800 and 1920. In cultural theory, following Said, it refers to a system of thought that constructs the East as the West's opposite: irrational where the West is rational, sensual where the West is disciplined, static where the West is progressive. The two meanings overlap but are not identical. A painting can be Orientalist in subject matter without fully embodying Said's ideological critique, and Said's critique addresses literature, scholarship, and politics as much as painting.
In painting, Orientalism covers several subgenres. The harem scene, which depicted the private quarters of Muslim women, was one of the most popular and most problematic. Since Western male artists could not enter harems, these scenes were largely fantasy, based on hearsay, imagination, and models posed in studios. The bazaar and street scene depicted public life in Middle Eastern and North African cities, often with ethnographic detail. The religious scene showed mosques, Sufi ceremonies, and pilgrimages. The military and political scene depicted battles, ambassadors, and colonial encounters. The landscape showed deserts, mountains, and ancient ruins.
Origins and History
Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign (1798)
Orientalism as a major artistic phenomenon begins with Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Egypt in 1798. Napoleon brought 167 scholars and scientists with his army, including the mathematician Gaspard Monge and the naturalist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Their work produced the Description de l'Egypte, a massive multi-volume publication (1809-1829) documenting Egyptian antiquities, natural history, and contemporary life. The publication introduced European audiences to Egyptian visual culture and sparked a wave of artistic interest in the Middle East. The Met's 2026 exhibition opens with this event.
Delacroix and the Romantic East (1830s-1860s)
Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) traveled to Morocco in 1832 as part of a French diplomatic mission. He spent six months in Morocco and Algeria, filling notebooks with drawings and watercolors of people, architecture, and landscapes. The trip transformed his palette. He wrote: "The Greeks and Romans are here at my door, in the Arabs who wrap themselves in a white blanket and look like Cato or Brutus." Delacroix's Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (1834), now in the Louvre, shows three Algerian women in a richly decorated interior. Unlike later harem scenes, Delacroix had actually visited the space, and the painting conveys a dignity and specificity that later, more fantastical Orientalist works lack.
Ingres and the Imagined Harem
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) never traveled to the Middle East. His La Grande Odalisque (1814) shows a reclining nude in a Turkish setting, with a peacock fan, a turban, and a hookah. The painting is not a depiction of a real Ottoman woman. It is a Western fantasy of the East, using "Oriental" props to make the nude more exotic and therefore more acceptable to French viewers. Ingres's The Turkish Bath (1862), a late work, shows dozens of nude women in a circular composition, again entirely imagined. The painting is in the Louvre.
Gerome and Academic Orientalism
Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) was the most commercially successful Orientalist painter. He traveled to Egypt, Turkey, and Syria, and his paintings are characterized by meticulous detail and photographic precision. The Snake Charmer (circa 1879), now in the Clark Art Institute, shows a nude boy holding a python before a tiled wall, with an old man playing a flute. The scene is staged, not observed, and it exemplifies the problem Said identified: the East is presented as exotic, timeless, and available for Western consumption. Gerome's Bashi-Bazouk (1868-1869), in the Met's collection, shows an Ottoman mercenary in elaborate costume. Osman Hamdi Bey: The View from Within
Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) was an Ottoman painter, archaeologist, and museum founder who studied in Paris under Gerome and Boulanger. He painted Ottoman life from within, using the academic techniques he learned in Paris but applying them to his own culture. The Tortoise Trainer (1907) shows an old man in Ottoman dress watching tortoises, an allegory of patience and reform. At the Mosque Door (1879), acquired by the Met in 2025 through the Turkiye Centennial Fund, presents Ottoman cosmopolitan modernity from an insider's perspective. Said's Critique (1978)
Edward Said's Orientalism, published in 1978, argued that Western scholarship, literature, and art constructed the "Orient" as a homogeneous, static, and inferior counterpart to the West. Said wrote: "The Orient was almost a European invention, and had been since antiquity a place of romance, exotic beings, haunting memories and landscapes, remarkable experiences." The book transformed the study of Orientalist art. Where paintings by Ingres, Delacroix, and Gerome had been appreciated for their technical skill and exotic subject matter, post-Said they were read as documents of colonial power, products of unequal relationships between Western artists and the cultures they depicted.

Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863)
Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (1834) is in the Louvre. The Fanatics of Tangier (1838) is in the Musee d'Orsay. Delacroix's Moroccan sketches, held in the Louvre's Department of Graphic Arts, are among the most valuable records of his 1832 trip. His Orientalist works are distinguished by firsthand observation and a seriousness that later, more fantastical Orientalism often lacks.
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867)
La Grande Odalisque (1814) is in the Louvre. The Turkish Bath (1862) is in the Louvre. Ingres never visited the Middle East, and his Orientalist paintings are fantasies that use "Eastern" settings to justify the Western tradition of the female nude. The anatomical impossibility of La Grande Odalisque, whose spine is several vertebrae too long, has been widely discussed by art historians.
Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904)
The Snake Charmer (circa 1879) is in the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The Prisoner (circa 1861) is in the Musee d'Orsay. Gerome's meticulous technique and staged compositions made him the most popular Orientalist painter of his time, and the most criticized after Said.
John Frederick Lewis (1804-1876)
Lewis lived in Cairo for a decade (1841-1851) and painted Egyptian interiors with a level of detail and specificity that few other Orientalist painters achieved. The Hhareem (1850) shows a domestic interior in Cairo. Lewis's work is distinguished by his actual knowledge of Egyptian domestic life, though he still painted for a Western audience.
Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910)
The Tortoise Trainer (1907) is in the Pera Museum in Istanbul. At the Mosque Door (1879) is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hamdi Bey's work represents the possibility of an Orientalism turned inside out: a painter from the "Orient" using Western academic technique to depict his own culture with dignity and complexity.
Contemporary Reassessment
The 2026 exhibition at the Met is part of a broader reassessment of Orientalist art. Orientalism is related to Japonisme, the Western fascination with Japanese art, though Japonisme focused on a country that was never colonized by the West.
