In 1913, Robert Delaunay painted a circle. Not a picture of a circle, not a circle representing the sun or a wheel or a plate. Just a circle: concentric rings of color, blue and green and red and yellow, radiating outward from a center point on a white canvas. He called it Premier Disque, or First Disk. It was one of the first fully abstract paintings ever exhibited in Europe. A poet named Guillaume Apollinaire had already given the movement that produced it a name: Orphism, after the Greek musician Orpheus, whose lyre could charm the dead. Apollinaire thought painting should do what music does: move you without depicting anything at all.
Orphism was a short-lived abstract art movement that emerged in Paris between 1912 and 1914. It was named by the poet and critic Guillaume Apollinaire, who used the term to describe a group of painters who had moved beyond Cubism toward a painting based on color, light, and rhythm rather than representation. The central figures were Robert Delaunay and his wife Sonia Delaunay, along with the Czech-born painter František Kupka and the French artist Francis Picabia. What united them was the conviction that color itself could be the subject of a painting, not a description of something seen but a sensation produced directly on the retina and in the mind.

What Is Orphism?
Orphism is the name Apollinaire gave to a tendency in Parisian painting around 1912 that pushed toward pure abstraction through color. The term was elastic. Apollinaire variously described it as "the art of painting new compositions with elements not taken from reality as it is seen, but entirely created by the artist," as a school of painters who had "arrived at a more internal, less intellectual, more poetic vision of the universe," and as an art of "pure aesthetic pleasure." The definition shifted depending on which paintings Apollinaire had seen recently, which is one reason the label never fully stuck.
The Delaunays preferred their own term: Simultanism, or simultanéisme, invoking the overlapping experiences of the twentieth-century city. Robert Delaunay was fascinated by the concept of simultaneity, the idea that modern life bombards the senses with multiple impressions at once: electric lights, moving traffic, the Eiffel Tower seen from different angles. Sonia Delaunay applied the same principle across painting, textiles, book design, and clothing, making Simultanism a truly cross-disciplinary practice. Kupka rejected all categories. He was a mystic who believed that color and form could express spiritual truths directly, without the mediation of recognizable subjects.
The Guggenheim Museum's 2024-2025 exhibition "Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910-1930" was the first in-depth examination of the movement. Curated by Tracey Bashkoff and Vivien Greene, it featured 82 works by 26 artists installed across five levels of the museum's spiral rotunda. The curators used the term Orphism "in an elastic sense," reaching back to an 1864 book on color theory by the French chemist Michel-Eugene Chevreul and forward to a 1940s painting by Albert Gleizes. Historical Context and Origins
Orphism grew out of the same Parisian avant-garde that produced Cubism. Picasso and Braque, working in Montmartre between 1907 and 1914, had dismantled the Renaissance picture plane, replacing single-point perspective with fragmented, faceted forms. But Cubism in its Analytic phase (1908-1912) was almost monochromatic. Picasso and Braque used ochres, browns, and grays, treating color as secondary to structure. The Orphists reversed this priority. They kept the geometric fragmentation but flooded it with color.
Apollinaire coined the term in 1912, in response to exhibitions at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. In his review of the 1913 Salon des Independants, he declared: "The reign of Orpheus is beginning." He identified Robert Delaunay as the movement's leading figure and also attached the label to Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Leger, Francis Picabia, and Kupka, artists who had little stylistically in common but who shared an interest in pushing painting toward pure abstraction.
The movement drew on several intellectual sources. Chevreul's De la loi du contraste simultane des couleurs (1839), which described how colors appear to change when placed side by side, was read by both Delaunays. The Neo-Impressionist color theory of Seurat and Signac provided a technical foundation. The Blue Rider group in Munich, led by Wassily Kandinsky, contributed a spiritual dimension: the idea that abstract color could express inner states rather than outer appearances. Kupka, who had been painting abstract works since 1910, was in contact with both the Parisian and Munich avant-gardes.
The Art Newspaper noted in October 2024 that the Guggenheim show's most important historical contribution was returning Sonia Delaunay to the center of the story. "Unmentioned by Apollinaire and long treated as a historical footnote in Robert's career," the review stated, "she emerges here as the more inventive artist, adopting a transmedial, multidimensional approach to the style she and her husband called simultaneisme in an attempt to make it a truly living art." Key Artists and Pioneers
Robert Delaunay (1885-1941)
Delaunay is the artist most closely associated with Orphism. His Eiffel Tower series (1910-1912) transformed the Parisian landmark into a fractured, colorful form that seemed to vibrate on the canvas. The Guggenheim's conservation team cleaned the earliest work in the series, inscribed 1910 but now believed to have been completed in 1911, removing "years of accumulated grime" to reveal the painting's original color shifts. Simultaneous Contrasts: Sun and Moon (1913, Guggenheim Museum) is a radiant tondo evoking celestial bodies in orbit. Premier Disque (1913, private collection) is the most radically nonobjective painting of its moment: a pure circle of color with no reference to the visible world whatsoever.
Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979)
Sonia Delaunay was not mentioned by Apollinaire in his original list of Orphists, a omission that the Guggenheim exhibition corrected. Her Prismes electriques (1914, Guggenheim Museum) uses banded disks of color inspired by the electric lamps newly installed on the streets of Paris. She extended Simultanism beyond painting into textile design, book binding, and fashion. Her Prose du Transsiberien (1913), a collaboration with the poet Blaise Cendrars, was a two-meter-long folding book with abstract color designs alongside Cendrars's poetry. She opened a textile workshop in Paris in 1924 and designed fabrics for films and department stores, making Simultanism the only abstract art movement that also produced consumer goods.
František Kupka (1871-1957)
Kupka was painting abstract works before Delaunay. His Amorpha, Fugue in Two Colors (1912, National Gallery, Prague) was exhibited at the 1912 Salon des Independants and is one of the first entirely abstract paintings shown in public. It uses swirling forms in fuchsia and emerald that evoke a musical fugue translated into visual terms. Kupka was a mystic and a spiritualist who believed that abstract form could express cosmic truths. He rejected the Orphism label and had a de facto feud with Apollinaire, who left him out of the growing list of Orphists. The Guggenheim exhibition's co-curator Vivien Greene stressed that Kupka was "firmly working in an Orphist idiom" despite his rejection of the term. The Guggenheim also cleaned Kupka's Divertimento I (1935) for the exhibition, using new nanogel technology to remove decades of grime.
Francis Picabia (1879-1953)
Picabia's Edtaonisl (Ecclesiastique) (1913, Art Institute of Chicago) is a jigsaw arrangement of twisting coils and irregular planes with a mechanical sheen. The title is a mash-up of the words "etoile" and "danse," and the painting was supposedly inspired by an encounter with the dancer Stacia Napierkowska on a transatlantic crossing. Picabia later moved toward Dada and abandoned Orphism entirely, but his 1913 paintings are among the most visually complex works associated with the movement.
The Synchromists: Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell
Two American painters working in Paris developed a parallel approach. Macdonald-Wright and Russell called their movement Synchromism, and their paintings used rotating forms of color that look similar to Delaunay's disks. Apollinaire regarded them as part of the Orphist constellation. The Guggenheim exhibition included their work alongside the European Orphists, blurring the line between the two movements.
Legacy and Influence
Orphism's active period was extremely short. By 1914, the outbreak of World War I scattered the Parisian avant-garde. Delaunay was mobilized. Picabia left for New York. The movement never formally dissolved because it was never formally organized. It existed because Apollinaire said it did, and when Apollinaire stopped talking about it, it ceased to exist as a category.
The art historian Gordon Hughes, in his 2014 study of Delaunay, called Orphism "the only dead end in Alfred H. Barr Jr.'s infamous genealogy of modernism," the one ism that "goes exactly nowhere." The Artforum review of the Guggenheim show acknowledged this problem: Orphism produced some of the first abstract paintings in European art, yet its influence was eclipsed by Surrealism and Dada on one side and by the architectonic abstraction of De Stijl, Constructivism, and the Bauhaus on the other. But the Guggenheim exhibition argued that Orphism's influence was broader than the "dead end" label suggests. Sonia Delaunay's transmedial practice anticipated the dissolution of boundaries between fine art and design that became central to later movements. The Orphist emphasis on color as a primary expressive tool fed directly into the color field painting of Abstract Expressionism, particularly the work of Mark Rothko. And the idea that color could produce a response analogous to music influenced the development of Op Art in the 1960s, where optical effects of color and form create sensations of movement and vibration.
