In 1951, the Argentine-Italian artist Lucio Fontana suspended a 100-meter loop of neon tubing from the ceiling of the Palazzo dell'Arte in Milan for the 9th Milan Triennial. The neon loop extended across the whole ceiling, a continuous sign of intersecting curves of light that critics at the time described variously as a lasso, an arabesque, and a piece of spaghetti. Fontana rejected all of these. "It is not a lasso, an arabesque, nor a piece of spaghetti," he said. "It is the beginning of a new expression." He called the work Spatial Light: Structure in Neon, and it was the first time an artist had used neon tubing as a fine art medium rather than for signage or advertising. Fontana had already predicted the move two years earlier, in 1949, when he wrote: "There can be no evolution in art that still uses stone and colour. It will be possible to make a new art with light (neon, etc.), television, projection."
Neon art is art that uses electrified gas-filled glass tubes as a sculptural and light medium. The tubes are hand-bent into shapes, words, or abstract forms and filled with noble gases, typically neon for red-orange light or argon for blue, with phosphor coatings producing other colors. When high voltage is applied, the gas ionizes and glows. The result is a medium that is simultaneously drawing, sculpture, and light source. Neon tubes are made by heating glass to the point where it can be bent by hand over a pattern. The glassblower shapes the tube, attaches electrodes to each end, evacuates the air, and backfills the tube with a noble gas at low pressure. When a high-voltage transformer sends current through the gas, the gas ionizes and emits light. Pure neon produces a red-orange glow. Argon, with a drop of mercury, produces blue. By coating the inside of the tube with phosphor powders, manufacturers can produce dozens of colors from green to pink to white. The color is determined by the gas and the coating, not by the glass itself.
The distinction between neon and fluorescent light matters in art history. Fluorescent tubes, the kind Dan Flavin used, are industrial products containing a gas mixture that includes neon and argon, with a phosphor coating on the inside. Neon tubes are hand-blown and filled with a single gas. Both are gas-discharge lights, and artists have used both, but the hand-blown quality of neon gives it a sculptural character that fluorescent tubes lack. Fluorescent tubes are readymade objects, pulled from a hardware store shelf. Neon tubes are made to specification, bent by a craftsperson following the artist's design.
Neon art occupies a peculiar position between sculpture and painting. The tubes are three-dimensional objects, but they are usually mounted on or near a wall, and the light they cast colors the surrounding space. The artwork is not just the tube itself but the colored light that fills the room. Dan Flavin described this quality when he said that his fluorescent works "bleed into the ambient space surrounding the fixture itself." Neon lighting was invented in 1910 by the French engineer Georges Claude, who displayed the first neon sign at the Paris Motor Show that year. By the 1920s, neon signs had spread to cities across the world, becoming the visual signature of urban nightlife. For four decades, neon was exclusively a commercial medium. The first artist to use it as fine art was the Czech kinetic artist Zdenek Pesanek, who incorporated neon tubes into abstract sculptures combining machinery and dismembered human torsos in the 1930s. Fontana's 1951 work at the Milan Triennial was the more recognized starting point. Fontana was already known for his Spatialist movement, which sought to overcome the divisions between architecture, painting, and sculpture. The neon ceiling was a "spatial environment" in which "colour, movement and space converged." Fontana's 1949 Black Environment, made with ultraviolet light at the Naviglio Gallery in Milan, was the predecessor: a gallery ceiling colored with violet, shadowy light in which vague phosphorescent shapes were hung. Fontana declared that "the spatial environment is the obvious solution for the introduction of change."
In the United States, neon art arrived through two distinct approaches. Dan Flavin began using fluorescent light in 1963 with the diagonal of May 25, 1963 (to Constantin Brancusi), a single yellow fluorescent tube mounted at a 45-degree angle against a gallery wall. Flavin called the tube his "diagonal of personal ecstasy." He restricted himself to commercially available fluorescent tubing in standard sizes, shapes, and colors, extracting banal hardware from its utilitarian context and inserting it into the world of high art. Flavin's work aligned him with Minimalism, alongside artists like Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt, who used industrial materials and geometric forms.
Bruce Nauman took a different path. His The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths (1967) presented that sentence in neon letters, spiraling outward in a window of a former storefront in San Francisco. Nauman wanted the piece to be the opposite of typical neon signage: where commercial signage is specific and direct, art should be unclear. In Europe, neon was taken up by artists associated with Arte Povera, particularly Mario Merz, who used neon to write Fibonacci sequences in igloo structures. Joseph Kosuth used neon to explore the philosophy of language, presenting dictionary definitions as glowing text. In the 1990s, the Young British Artists brought neon into the mainstream of contemporary art. Tracey Emin began working with neon in the early 1990s, crafting text pieces that mimic her own handwriting. Works like I Know, I Know, I Know (2002), More Passion (2010), and The Last Great Adventure Is You (2014) use neon to convey emotion, experience, and thought with the intimacy of a handwritten note and the visual punch of a commercial sign.
Neon art continues to evolve. In July 2026, the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, Washington, opened Luminous Glow: The Neon Landscapes of Kelsey Fernkopf, the Seattle-based artist's largest solo exhibition to date. Fernkopf, who has bent neon in sign shops around the Pacific Northwest since 1987, creates site-specific installations that juxtapose the fragility of hand-bent neon glass within outdoor environments. The exhibition features large-scale freestanding neon sculptures along with photographs documenting his outdoor compositions, including a new image captured at Whatcom Falls in March 2026. In July 2026, Anne Katrine Senstad's solo exhibition VEIEJA ESCUELERA at Synesthesia brought together neon sculpture and text-based works examining capitalism and value systems. Her Ascension/Descension Graph no 11 (2026), the largest sculpture in a series she started in 2020, covers over 18 feet of gallery wall space in green, blue, and copper neon. Also in 2026, Karlos Gil's exhibition New Fog at Florit/Florit in Palma de Mallorca (June to September 2026) presented a series called De-Extinction, made from fragments of industrial neon signs recovered from urban advertising systems and displaced by LED technology. Gil preserves the original glass, gas, and color of what he calls "endangered luminous bodies," reanimating them as "archaeological remains of a vanished economy of signs." The work highlights a material reality: as LED technology replaces neon in commercial signage, the craft of neon glass-bending is becoming endangered, and artists are increasingly the ones keeping it alive. Fontana's Spatial Light: Structure in Neon (1951) at the 9th Milan Triennial was the first use of neon as a fine art medium. The 100-meter loop of neon tubing suspended from the ceiling launched a visual language that became integral to contemporary art. Fontana's earlier Black Environment (1949), made with ultraviolet light, was the first "spatial environment" in which the viewer experienced a moving pictorial environment rather than a static artwork. Flavin used commercially available fluorescent tubes in standard sizes and colors, creating works that are simultaneously sculpture and painting. His the diagonal of May 25, 1963 (to Constantin Brancusi) was his first work using fluorescent light alone. His later barrier works, like untitled (to Barnett Newman to commemorate his simple problem, red, yellow, and blue), used fluorescent tubes to divide gallery spaces with colored light. Flavin's Varese Corridor (1974), installed at the Villa Panza in Varese, Italy, uses colored neon to dematerialize the architecture itself. Nauman's The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths (1967) established text-based neon art. The spiral of neon letters, hung in a storefront window, set the template for using neon's commercial associations against themselves: where a neon sign sells a product, Nauman's neon sign sells nothing, or rather, it sells the idea that art itself might be a kind of truth-telling. The wistful optimism of the text is undermined by the florid neon medium, creating an irony that subsequent text-based neon artists have continued to explore.
Emin's neon text pieces, crafted to mimic her own handwriting, use neon to convey intimate emotion with the visual authority of a commercial sign. I Know, I Know, I Know (2002) uses aggravated repetition in red and blue neon. More Passion (2010) was donated to the Government Art Collection and hangs in 10 Downing Street. The Last Great Adventure Is You (2014) refers not to another person but to the self, as if spoken to a mirror. Emin's work demonstrates neon's capacity for vulnerability: the medium that usually advertises products is here advertising private feelings.
Merz, associated with Arte Povera, used neon to write the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...) in igloo structures made of found materials. The neon numbers, glowing against rough materials like mud, glass, and branches, created a dialogue between mathematical order and organic form. Merz's igloos, begun in the late 1960s, used neon as a structural element rather than text or pure light, integrating it into architectural forms that referenced both nomadic shelters and mathematical systems.
