Arte Povera: Worthless Materials and the Reclamation of Reality (1966-1972)

In 1967, an Italian art critic named Germano Celant organized an exhibition at the La Bertesca gallery in Genoa. He called it "Arte Povera e IM Spazio," which translates to "Poor Art and Im Space." The artists in the show used materials that no one had ever put in a gallery before: burlap sacks, lead ingots, live plants, blocks of wax, piles of earth, neon tubes, and raw cotton. Celant wrote in the catalogue that these artists were engaged in a "guerrilla war" against the dehumanizing forces of consumerism. They were taking back "possession of reality" by using materials that had no commercial value, no polish, no pretense. Arte Povera was an Italian art movement active from 1966 to 1972. The thirteen artists associated with the movement were Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini, and Gilberto Zorio. They worked in cities across Italy, primarily Turin, Milan, Rome, and Genoa, and they were united by a refusal of the slick, industrial aesthetic that dominated American Minimalism and Pop Art in the 1960s.

What Is Arte Povera?

Arte Povera is art made from humble, everyday, and impermanent materials. The artists used what Celant called "poor" elements: earth, rags, coal, twigs, stones, water, fire, wax, lead, neon, and found objects. These materials were chosen because they carried no art-historical baggage. They were not oil paint, not bronze, not marble. They were the stuff of hardware stores, farms, and construction sites. By putting them in galleries, the Arte Povera artists forced viewers to confront the materials themselves: their weight, their texture, their temperature, their smell.

The movement was also a political gesture. Italy in the 1960s was experiencing rapid industrialization and a consumer boom that the Arte Povera artists viewed with suspicion. American Pop Art celebrated consumer culture. American Minimalism used industrial fabrication to produce pristine geometric objects. Arte Povera rejected both positions. Historical Context and Origins

Arte Povera emerged in Italy during a period of intense social and political upheaval. The postwar economic boom had transformed northern Italy into an industrial powerhouse, but the benefits were unevenly distributed. Student protests, labor strikes, and political violence escalated through the late 1960s. The Arte Povera artists were working in this charged atmosphere, and their use of raw, unrefined materials was a deliberate rejection of the polished products of Italian industrial design that had become an international symbol of the country's economic recovery.

Celant coined the term "Arte Povera" in an article published in the magazine Flash Art in November 1967. The first exhibition under that name was held at Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa. Celant organized two further exhibitions that consolidated the group: "Arte Povera + Azioni Povere" in Amalfi in 1968 and "Arte Povera. Conceptual, Im Spazio" at the De Foscherari gallery in Bologna in 1968. The Amalfi exhibition was held on the beach and in the streets, with artists creating temporary installations from rocks, rope, and found materials. By 1972, when Celant organized the final Arte Povera exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Lucerne, the movement had run its official course, though most of the artists continued to work in the same vein for decades.

The Bourse de Commerce exhibition in Paris, which ran from October 2024 through January 2025, was the most comprehensive Arte Povera survey in recent years. Curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, a recognized specialist in the movement and former director of the Castello di Rivoli, it assembled more than 250 works by all thirteen protagonists. Key Artists and Pioneers

Jannis Kounellis (1936-2017)

Kounellis was born in Greece and moved to Rome in 1956. His early works, the Alfabeto paintings (1960-1963), feature stenciled letters and symbols extracted from urban signage, which the artist sang in performances in his studio. By the late 1960s, he had abandoned canvas entirely. His Untitled (1967, various collections) features twelve live horses installed in the gallery, a work that literally brought life into the art space. His later works incorporated iron, coal, cotton, jute sacks, and fire, often juxtaposed in ways that evoke industrial labor and agrarian life. Mario Merz (1925-2003)

Merz is best known for his igloos, structures built from metal armatures covered with glass, clay, mud, or branches. The igloos, which he began making in 1968, are both "symbols of the world and of small homes," as Merz described them, shelters that exist at the border of full and empty. Many incorporate neon tubes displaying the Fibonacci sequence, the mathematical progression in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...). For Merz, the Fibonacci sequence represented the infinite generative power of nature. The Bourse de Commerce exhibition placed Merz's igloos in relation to the glass hemicycle atop the museum's rotunda, creating what the curator called "correspondences between the works and the spirit of the place." Michelangelo Pistoletto (b. 1933)

Pistoletto's mirror paintings, begun in 1962, are polished stainless steel surfaces bearing photographic silkscreen images. The viewer sees both the image and their own reflection, making the work incomplete without the spectator's presence. His Venus of the Rags (1967, various collections) places a classical statue of Venus facing a pile of discarded clothing, juxtaposing high art and waste, permanence and transience. The work is one of the most iconic Arte Povera pieces, and it captures the movement's central tension: the collision between Italy's classical heritage and the disposable culture of the postwar consumer society.

Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994)

Boetti explored systems, chance, and collaboration. His early works from the 1960s, including Manifesto (1967), which lists the members of Arte Povera, and Mimetico (1967), exhibited in Genoa during the first Arte Povera show, use industrial materials sourced from hardware stores. His later Mappe series, begun after a trip to Afghanistan in 1971, are embroidered world maps made by Afghan women, each country colored with its flag. The maps are simultaneously political, geographical, and decorative, and they raise questions about authorship since Boetti delegated their production to craftspeople he never met. Giovanni Anselmo (1934-2023)

Anselmo's works use gravity and physical force as their subject. Untitled (Sculpture That Eats) (1968, various collections) consists of a block of granite with a smaller stone balanced on top, held in place by a head of lettuce inserted between them. As the lettuce dries out and shrinks, the smaller stone slips, and the sculpture must be reassembled. The work is a demonstration of gravity, time, and decay, all at once. Torsion (1968) is a twisted cloth bound with a metal bar, a frozen image of physical force.

Giuseppe Penone (b. 1947)

Penone is the youngest of the Arte Povera artists and the one most directly engaged with nature. His Alpi Marittime series (1968) involved interventions in a forest near his native village in Piedmont: he cast his hand in bronze and gripped a tree trunk, leaving the cast attached as the tree grew around it. His Tree of 12 Meters (1980-1982) is a carved wooden beam from which he carved away the outer growth rings to reveal the sapling at the center, reversing time to show the tree as it was decades ago.

Marisa Merz (1926-2019)

Marisa Merz, the only woman in the original Arte Povera group, worked with aluminum foil, nylon, and copper wire. Her Living Sculpture (1966) consists of rolled aluminum sheets suspended from the ceiling, forms that she also shaped into shoes and household objects. Her nylon installations, hanging webs of thread that fill gallery spaces, are weightless and ethereal, the opposite of the heavy iron and stone of her male counterparts. Her inclusion in the Bourse de Commerce exhibition alongside the other twelve artists confirmed her place in the movement after decades of marginalization.

How to Spot Arte Povera in a Museum

Look for raw materials. If the artwork is made of earth, stone, wood, wax, lead, burlap, neon, fire, water, or live plants, and it is installed in a gallery rather than a construction site, it is likely Arte Povera or influenced by it. The materials are not transformed. They are the same materials you would find in nature or a hardware store. The point is that they are ordinary, and the artwork does not pretend otherwise.

Look for the relationship between natural and industrial materials. Many Arte Povera works combine organic and synthetic elements: a tree branch and a neon tube, a pile of stones and a steel frame, a block of wax and an electric light. The contrast between these materials is part of the work's meaning. It reflects the tension between pre-industrial and industrial Italy that the movement was exploring.

Look for impermanence. Arte Povera works often change over time. Anselmo's lettuce dries out. Penone's trees grow. Kounellis's coal can be replaced. The works are not meant to last forever in their original state. They are processes, not objects, and their deterioration is part of their meaning.

Finally, look at how the work occupies space. Arte Povera works are often large, installed directly on the floor or leaning against walls, and they transform the gallery into an environment rather than a display space. Merz's igloos create rooms within rooms. Kounellis's installations fill entire walls with iron and coal. The viewer walks through the work, not around it.

Legacy and Influence

Arte Povera's influence on contemporary sculpture is incalculable. The movement's use of humble materials, its emphasis on process and impermanence, and its refusal of commercial polish opened the door for installation art, environmental art, and process art. Artists like Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley, and Doris Salcedo owe direct debts to the Arte Povera precedent. The movement also established the principle that sculpture can be made from anything, a principle that underlies most contemporary three-dimensional art.

The movement's political dimension, its resistance to consumerism and industrial standardization, resonates with contemporary concerns about sustainability and the environmental cost of industrial production. The Arte Povera artists were using recycled and natural materials decades before these practices became widespread in art. Their insistence on the value of humble materials anticipates current debates about waste, ecology, and the relationship between art and the environment.
