In 1965, an artist named Joseph Kosuth installed a folding chair on the floor of a gallery. On the wall behind it, he mounted a photograph of the same chair. Next to the photograph, he mounted a dictionary entry defining the word "chair." He called the work One and Three Chairs. The actual chair, the photograph of the chair, and the definition of "chair" were all present at once, and none of them was more the artwork than the others. The real artwork was not any of the three objects. It was the idea they generated: the question of what a chair is, and what it means to represent one, and what it means to define one. Kosuth had made art out of a philosophical problem, and the physical objects were just illustrations.
Conceptual Art is an art movement in which the idea or concept is more important than the physical object. It emerged in the mid-1960s in the United States and Europe and remains active today. Conceptual artists use language, photography, instructions, maps, diagrams, and everyday materials to produce works that can be realized in multiple forms or not realized at all. The physical artifact, if there is one, is secondary to the thought it embodies. Sol LeWitt wrote in his 1967 essay "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art": "The idea becomes a machine that makes the art." That sentence is the movement's most quoted statement and its clearest description.

Conceptual Art is art in which the concept is the work. The physical form of the artwork is either secondary or entirely unnecessary. A Conceptual artwork can be a written statement, a set of instructions, a photograph, a document, a performance, or a temporary installation. It can also be nothing visible at all: just an idea, communicated through text or through the context of an exhibition.
The movement was a reaction against the dominance of the art object in the postwar art world. Abstract Expressionism had made the painted canvas the supreme artistic achievement. Minimalism had reduced the object to its most basic physical properties. Conceptual Art took the next step: it questioned whether the object was necessary at all. If the idea is what matters, then the object is just a container for the idea, and the container can be discarded.
Kosuth articulated this position in his 1969 essay "Art After Philosophy," one of the movement's foundational texts. He argued that art after Duchamp was fundamentally a conceptual activity: the readymade had shown that the choice of an object could be the artistic act, and that the object itself was irrelevant. Kosuth wrote that art's value is not aesthetic but tautological: art is art because it defines itself as art, not because it is beautiful or well-crafted. Conceptual Art has multiple origins. Marcel Duchamp's readymades, beginning with Bicycle Wheel (1913) and culminating in Fountain (1917), established the principle that the artist's selection of an object could constitute the artwork. The Dada movement of the 1910s and 1920s attacked the conventions of art through performance, collage, and provocation. The Fluxus movement of the 1960s, influenced by John Cage's experimental music, used event scores and simple actions as artworks. All of these fed into Conceptual Art, but the movement's immediate catalyst was the exhaustion of painting in the mid-1960s.
Sol LeWitt's "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art," published in Artforum in 1967, was the movement's first manifesto. LeWitt wrote: "In Conceptual Art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work. When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art." LeWitt's wall drawings, first executed in 1968, demonstrated this principle: the artist wrote a set of instructions, and trained drafters carried them out on the wall. The same instructions could produce different drawings depending on who executed them and where, but they were all the same artwork because they all embodied the same idea.
The Art & Language collective, founded in 1968 in Coventry, England, by Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, and Harold Hurrell, placed language at the center of art. They published journals of theoretical texts that were themselves the artwork. Joseph Kosuth joined the group in 1969, followed by Mel Ramsden and Charles Harrison. Kosuth is one of the central figures of international Conceptual Art. His One and Three Chairs (1965, Museum of Modern Art, New York) is the movement's signature work: a chair, a photograph of the chair, and a dictionary definition of "chair," all presented as equivalent. His Proto-Investigations series, including One and Three Mirrors and Clock: One and Five (both 1965), applies the same structure to other objects. In these works, meaning emerges through the relationship between image, object, and text, while the viewer becomes an active participant in interpretation. Kosuth's 2026 Venice exhibition at Casa dei Tre Oci, titled "The exchange value of language has fallen to zero," presents seminal works from the 1960s and 1970s alongside a newly commissioned neon installation. The exhibition includes The Fifth Investigation (1969) and The Seventh Investigation (1970), the latter installed on the Canal Grande, extending conceptual ideas into public space.
LeWitt bridged Minimalism and Conceptual Art. His wall drawings are executed from written instructions that anyone can follow. Wall Drawing #118 (1971) instructs: "On a wall surface, any continuous stretch of wall, using a hard pencil, place fifty points at random. The points should be evenly distributed over the area of the wall. All of the points should be connected by straight lines." The drawing is different every time it is installed, but it is always the same artwork because the instructions are the artwork. LeWitt produced over 1,200 wall drawings before his death, and they continue to be installed in museums and galleries worldwide.
Weiner made art from language. His works are statements, painted or printed on walls, that describe situations or actions. ONE QUARTER EXTERIOR GREEN PAINT POURED INTO DITCH (1969) is a Weiner artwork. You can read the statement on a wall, or you can carry out the action it describes, or you can simply know that the statement exists. Weiner published a "Statement of Intent" in 1968 declaring that the artwork need not be built, that it could exist as language alone. His work is held in the collections of MoMA, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou.
Kawara's Date Paintings (the Today series, 1966-2013) are monochromatic canvases painted with the date on which they were made, in the language and format of the country where Kawara was working. He made nearly 3,000 of them over five decades. Each painting is a record of a day, and the series is a record of a life measured in days. Kawara also produced I Got Up (1968-1979), a series of postcards sent to friends listing the time he woke up each day, and I Am Still Alive (1970-2000), a series of telegrams with that message. The Raven Row gallery in London presented "Conceptual Art and Christine Kozlov" in 2026, including a date painting by Kawara reading "NOV.18,1967." Read the review at Burlington Contemporary.
Kozlov was an American Conceptual artist whose work has been rediscovered through the 2026 Raven Row exhibition in London. Her works use administrative materials: ring binders, printouts, telegrams, film canisters, typewritten sheets, photobooth strips. 271 Blank Sheets of Paper Corresponding to 271 Days of Concepts Rejected is a stack of blank pages that makes the time of failed creative labor physically apparent. Kozlov's work plays with opacity and communication, meticulously recording things that record nothing, a conceptual gesture that questions the relationship between information and meaning.
Baldessari combined photography, text, and painting in works that examine how images communicate. His I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art (1971) is a video and series of prints in which the artist writes that sentence over and over, like a schoolchild's punishment. Wrong (1967-1968) is a photograph of the artist standing in front of a palm tree, with the tree appearing to grow out of his head, accompanied by the word "Wrong" printed below. The work is a joke about compositional rules and a serious question about who decides what is correct in art.
Conceptual Art was never solely a Western movement. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul presents "This is (Not) Conceptual Art" from June 19 through October 11, 2026, examining Korean conceptual practices from the 1970s through the 2000s. The exhibition brings together 140 works by 28 artists and asks whether "conceptual art" can meaningfully describe Korean practices that never fully separated idea from material. Lee Kun-Yong's Logic of Place (1975) shows the artist drawing a circle on a field, pointing to it from outside and saying "there," stepping inside and saying "here," then exiting again. Ahn Kyuchul's Five Questions for an Unknown Artist (1991) uses doors marked "Art" and "Life" with a chair leg growing out of a flowerpot. Read more at Korea JoongAng Daily.
The MMCA exhibition argues that Korean conceptual art never went to the "bloodless finish" of the Western model, where the object disappears entirely. In Korea, the idea and the material stayed in the room together. This raises a larger question about Conceptual Art globally: in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia, conceptual practices often served political and social functions that the Western model did not anticipate. The MMCA will host a symposium in August 2026 with scholars including Alexander Alberro and Reiko Tomii to discuss Korean conceptualism within a global framework.
Look for text. If the artwork consists primarily of written language, printed statements, or dictionary definitions, it is likely Conceptual Art. The text may be the entire artwork, or it may be instructions for producing the artwork, or it may be documentation of an action that took place elsewhere.
Look for documentation. Conceptual artists often use photography, video, and written records to document actions or processes that are temporary or invisible. If you see a series of photographs showing an artist doing something mundane, like walking a line or stacking stones, accompanied by a text explaining what you are seeing, you are probably looking at Conceptual Art.
Look for the absence of traditional art objects. If the gallery contains documents, maps, diagrams, index cards, or typewritten pages instead of paintings or sculptures, the work is likely Conceptual. The materials are deliberately non-artistic. They come from offices, libraries, and filing cabinets rather than art supply stores.
Finally, read the label. Conceptual Art often requires explanation. The title, the date, and the description on the wall label may be more important than the object itself. If reading the label changes your understanding of what you are looking at, that is a Conceptual Art experience.
Conceptual Art changed the definition of art more fundamentally than any movement since Duchamp. It established the principle that art can be an idea, a proposition, or a question, and that the physical object is optional. This principle underlies most contemporary art practices: installation art, performance art, video art, and digital art all operate within the framework that Conceptual Art created.
The movement also democratized art production. If the idea is the artwork, then you do not need a studio, expensive materials, or technical skill to make art. You need an idea and a way to communicate it. This opened art to people who had been excluded by the traditional requirements of craft and training, and it expanded the range of what could be considered art to include almost anything.
