In 2026, the Yale Center for British Art opens "John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined," a landmark exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of Constable's birth. The show brings together his cloud studies, plein air sketches, and monumental "six-footers" including Hadleigh Castle, one of the most iconic English landscape paintings ever made. What the exhibition reveals, for the first time at this scale, is the full arc of Constable's creative process: rapid outdoor studies building toward huge canvases refined over years. Constable was not painting scenery. He was painting his childhood, his home, and his grief over a place he could no longer inhabit after his wife's death. That is what landscape painting does at its best. It turns ground into meaning.
Landscape painting is the depiction of natural scenery as the primary subject of a work of art, rather than as a backdrop for figures, narratives, or religious scenes. Rivers, mountains, forests, skies, fields, and coastlines become the content of the painting. The genre includes pure landscapes, where no human figures appear or where figures are minor elements, as well as pastoral scenes, marine paintings, and city views that share the landscape's concern with place and atmosphere. Landscape painting emerged as an independent genre in different cultures at different times: in China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, and in the West as a major fine art form in the 18th and 19th centuries.
This entry covers what landscape painting is, how it developed across cultures, which artists defined it, and how a genre once considered inferior to history painting became one of the most powerful modes of artistic expression.
What Is Landscape Painting?
A landscape painting makes the natural world the subject rather than the setting. Before landscape became an independent genre, scenery served as background. In Renaissance religious paintings, hills and trees framed the Madonna. In Dutch genre scenes, a window onto a canal provided depth. Landscape painting reverses this hierarchy. The land, the sky, the water, and the light are the point. Figures, if present, are small, incidental, or there to provide scale.
The genre encompasses several subcategories. Pure landscape shows nature without significant human presence. Pastoral landscape depicts rural life, often idealized, with shepherds, flocks, and cottages. Marine painting focuses on seas, ships, and coastlines. Topographical landscape documents a specific place with accuracy. The sublime landscape, a Romantic variant, shows nature as overwhelming and terrifying: storms, avalanches, vast mountains, raging seas. Each subcategory carries different assumptions about what nature is and what painting it should accomplish.
The National Gallery in London defines landscape as "the depiction of natural scenery" and notes that it "became a popular subject for painters in the seventeenth century." Read the full definition at the National Gallery. Smarthistory's analysis of Song Dynasty landscape painting notes that "the Chinese term for landscape, shanshui, literally means mountain and water," reflecting a cosmological understanding of nature that differs fundamentally from the Western tradition. Origins and History
Chinese Landscape Painting (Song Dynasty, 960-1279)
The oldest continuous tradition of landscape painting as an independent fine art genre comes from China. During the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), imperial patronage and the collecting practices of the court encouraged artists to develop landscape painting into a sophisticated art form with its own theory, techniques, and philosophical foundations. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City holds one of the finest collections of Song Dynasty landscape painting outside China, including Li Cheng's A Solitary Temple Amid Clearing Peaks (Northern Song period), a monumental hanging scroll that presents a mountainous terrain so vast that the human figures are barely visible. The 2026 exhibition "Legendary Landscapes: Sublime Visions from China's Song Dynasty" at the Nelson-Atkins brings these works into focus, showing how Song painters used multiple visual perspectives to present each painting as a microcosm of the universe. Song Dynasty landscape painting was rooted in the connection between the natural world and spiritual practice. Shanshui painting was not about recording a view. It was about expressing the relationship between humans, nature, and the cosmos. Painters used ink on silk or paper, working in monochrome or with slight color, and the scale of the landscapes was often enormous. Handscrolls could extend to several meters, inviting the viewer to "travel" through the painted terrain by unrolling the scroll section by section. The Southern Song (1127-1279), after the court relocated south, produced more intimate landscapes reflecting the warmer, gentler terrain of the south.
European Landscape (16th-17th Century)
In Europe, landscape painting emerged as an independent genre more slowly. During the Renaissance, scenery was subordinate to narrative. Leonardo da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks (1483-1486) features a landscape of extraordinary geological detail, but the landscape serves the religious subject. Joachim Patinir, a Flemish painter active in the early 16th century, is often cited as the first European painter to make landscape the primary subject. His Landscape with the Flight into Egypt (circa 1515) gives the biblical figures a tiny corner of the canvas while the panorama of mountains, rivers, and bizarre rock formations fills the rest.
The Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century produced the first major school of European landscape painting. Jacob van Ruisdael painted turbulent skies, windmills, and flat Dutch countryside with a seriousness that elevated scenery to high art. Meindert Hobbema, his student, specialized in wooded landscapes with sunlit clearings and winding paths. The Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller, subject of a 2026 exhibition at the National Gallery in London, taught himself landscape painting by copying these Dutch 17th-century masters. The British School and the Elevation of Landscape (18th-19th Century)
Landscape painting reached its European peak in Britain between 1750 and 1850. Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), though known primarily as a portraitist, painted landscapes throughout his career that combined close observation of the English countryside with a compositional sense borrowed from Claude Lorrain. The 2026 exhibition "Gainsborough, Turner and Constable: Inventing Landscape" at Gainsborough's House in Sudbury brings together more than 40 paintings, watercolours, and drawings to show how these three artists "elevated landscape from a secondary backdrop to a subject in its own right." John Constable (1776-1837) broke with the picturesque tradition by making direct observation of nature his life's work. His cloud studies, painted rapidly outdoors at Hampstead Heath between 1821 and 1822, are among the most scientifically attentive paintings in art history. He labeled them with weather conditions and times of day. His large canvases, including The Hay Wain (1821) and Hadleigh Castle (1829), translated this observational data into monumental compositions that conveyed the feeling of the English countryside with unprecedented accuracy.
J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) pushed landscape toward the sublime. His early watercolours were topographically precise, but his later oils dissolved recognizable scenery into light, atmosphere, and color. Snow Storm: Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth (1842) is a vortex of paint that barely resolves into a ship and a storm. Turner was painting not what the landscape looked like but what it felt like to be inside it.
Romantic and Hudson River School Landscapes
In Germany, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) painted landscapes as spiritual statements. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818) shows a solitary figure on a mountain peak, his back to the viewer, gazing into a sea of mist. The painting is not about the mountains. It is about the human confrontation with the infinite, staged through landscape. Read more about Friedrich in our entry on Romanticism.
In the United States, the Hudson River School, active from the mid-1820s to the late 19th century, produced vast landscapes of the American wilderness. Thomas Cole, the school's founder, painted the Catskill Mountains and the Connecticut River Valley with a Romantic's eye for drama. Frederic Edwin Church, his student, traveled to South America and the Arctic, painting Heart of the Andes (1859) and Aurora Borealis (1865) on canvases over five feet wide. These paintings presented the American continent as a new Eden, untouched and sublime.
Key Artists and Works
Guo Xi (circa 1020-1090)
Guo Xi was a Northern Song painter whose Early Spring (1072) is one of the masterpieces of Chinese landscape painting. A monumental hanging scroll in ink and color on silk, it shows mountains emerging from mist with tiny figures and buildings barely visible in the valleys. Guo Xi wrote about landscape painting in theoretical terms, arguing that a painter should capture the "truth" of nature rather than its surface appearance. His treatise on mountain water painting influenced Chinese landscape theory for centuries.
Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682)
Ruisdael was the greatest Dutch landscape painter of the 17th century. View of Haarlem with Bleaching Grounds (circa 1670) shows the Dutch flatlands under a sky that fills two-thirds of the canvas, with linen laid out to bleach in the fields below. The Jewish Cemetery (circa 1654-1655) transforms a graveyard into a meditation on decay, with ruined tombs beside a torrent and dead trees against a stormy sky. Ruisdael's skies are not backdrops. They are the emotional engine of the painting.
John Constable (1776-1837)
Constable's The Hay Wain (1821) shows a cart crossing the River Stour at Flatford, Suffolk. The painting was not well received in England but caused a sensation at the 1824 Paris Salon, where it influenced French Realists including Delacroix. Constable's cloud studies (1821-1822), painted on Hampstead Heath, are small oil sketches that record specific weather conditions with scientific precision. He wrote on the back of one: "Sept. 13, 1821. 11 morning. South west wind, very fine morning, following heavy rain."
J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851)
Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed: The Great Western Railway (1844) shows a train crossing Maidenhead Bridge through a rainstorm, the landscape dissolving into speed and atmosphere. The Fighting Temeraire (1839) shows a decommissioned warship being towed to a breaker's yard, the sunset behind it turning the Thames into a field of gold. Turner painted landscape as a vehicle for feeling, history, and the physical properties of light. Read more in our entry on Romanticism.
Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840)
Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818) is the most reproduced landscape painting of the Romantic era. A man in a dark coat stands on a rocky summit, facing away from the viewer, looking into a sea of mist that fills the valley below. The painting is small, about 95 by 75 centimeters, but its emotional scale is enormous. Friedrich painted the landscape as a site of existential confrontation, not scenic pleasure.
How to Look at a Landscape Painting
When you stand in front of a landscape painting, the first question to ask is: where is the painter standing? In Song Dynasty landscapes, the viewer occupies multiple positions simultaneously, as if flying over the terrain. In Dutch 17th-century landscapes, the viewpoint is typically from a hill or dike, looking across flatland. In Constable, you are at ground level, standing in the field. In Friedrich, you are on the mountain peak, and the painter has placed you there to make you feel something specific.
Second, look at the sky. In Ruisdael and Constable, the sky is where the emotional action happens. Cloud formations, light direction, and the ratio of sky to land tell you what the painting is really about. A landscape with two-thirds sky is a painting about weather and atmosphere. A landscape with two-thirds land is a painting about place and ownership.
Third, look for figures. If there are no figures, the painter is presenting nature as self-sufficient. If there are small figures, they provide scale and show the relationship between humans and the land. If the figures are large or central, the painting is not really a landscape. It is a genre scene or portrait with scenery.
Landscape painting connects to plein air painting, the practice of painting outdoors directly from nature that Constable pioneered and the Impressionists made standard. It relates to Romanticism, which produced the sublime landscape tradition of Friedrich and Turner. The Hudson River School was America's first major landscape painting movement. Chinese landscape painting connects to sumi-e and ink wash traditions. For broader context on how landscape fit into the hierarchy of painting subjects, read our blog post on the hierarchy of genres.
See Landscape Painting in Person
Landscape painting rewards in-person viewing more than almost any other genre. Reproductions flatten the atmospheric effects that make these paintings work. The sky in a Constable cloud study is built from layered glazes that produce a luminosity no screen can reproduce.
In 2026, several major exhibitions offer the chance to see landscape painting at its best. "John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined" opens September 3, 2026, at the Yale Center for British Art and runs until July 25, 2027. "British Landscapes: A Sense of Place" at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester runs from May 30 to November 1, 2026, with works by more than 60 artists spanning Gainsborough to Barbara Hepworth. "Legendary Landscapes: Sublime Visions from China's Song Dynasty" at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City presents world treasures of Chinese shanshui painting. For the Dutch tradition, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds the largest collection of Ruisdael and Hobbema landscapes. For the Romantic sublime, the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin holds the largest collection of Friedrich paintings, including Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.
If you want to trace the history of landscape painting, start with the Song Dynasty scrolls at the Nelson-Atkins, move to Ruisdael at the Rijksmuseum, then to Constable and Turner at the Yale Center for British Art or Tate Britain. You will see the same impulse across cultures and centuries: the desire to make the natural world the subject of serious art.
