In October 1825, a young English-born painter named Thomas Cole took a steamboat up the Hudson River to the village of Catskill. He hiked into the Catskill Mountains and sketched Kaaterskill Falls, Lake with Dead Trees, and the view from Fort Putnam. When he returned to New York City, he hung three small paintings in the window of a bookshop on Broadway. A Revolutionary War painter named John Trumbull saw them, bought one for $25, and told two other artists to go see them. Cole became a celebrity overnight. Those three paintings launched the Hudson River School, the first truly American art movement.
The Hudson River School was a group of landscape painters based in New York City, active from about 1825 to the 1870s, who depicted the American wilderness with a combination of Romantic drama and naturalistic detail. The movement was founded by Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and carried forward by his student Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), Asher B. Durand (1796-1886), Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), and others. Their paintings of the Hudson River Valley, the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and later the American West and South America established landscape painting as a national art form.

The name "Hudson River School" was coined in the 1870s, probably by the New York Tribune art critic Clarence Cook or the landscape painter Homer Dodge Martin. It first appeared in print in 1879, and it was initially used disparagingly, as the style had fallen out of favor among collectors who preferred the plein-air naturalism of the Barbizon School. The label has never been supplanted, though, and it fairly characterizes the group: its New York headquarters, its landscape subject matter, and often literally the Hudson River itself.
The movement was not a formal school. Its members belonged to the National Academy of Design, socialized at the Century Club, and by 1858 many worked at the Tenth Street Studio Building in Greenwich Village, the first purpose-built artist workspace in New York. Several built homes along the Hudson River. The group shared an aesthetic vision influenced by European Romanticism, particularly the concept of the Sublime: the idea that nature's grandeur and terror could produce feelings of awe and spiritual reflection.
The Thomas Cole National Historic Site in Catskill, New York, celebrated the 200th anniversary of Cole's first trip to the Catskills in 2025. The site noted that Cole's paintings and writings advocated for the preservation of the natural landscape and gave rise to the country's identity of "America the beautiful." Thomas Cole emigrated from England to the United States in 1818 at the age of seventeen. He took his first extended sketching trip up the Hudson in the autumn of 1825, stopping at West Point and then at Catskill landing. He hiked west into the Catskill Mountains and painted the first landscapes of the area. The first review of his work appeared in the New York Evening Post on November 22, 1825. The brilliant autumn colors of the American landscape inspired him, and his close friend Asher Brown Durand became a prominent figure in the school.
Cole's style was marked by dramatic forms and vigorous technique, reflecting the British aesthetic theory of the Sublime. In the representation of American landscape, the application of the Sublime was virtually unprecedented. Cole's predecessors had not seriously addressed the wildness of native scenery. The wilderness theme had earlier gained currency in American literature, especially in James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking" novels, which were set in the upstate New York locales that became Cole's earliest subjects.
After a European tour, Cole's ambitions swelled. He produced monumental allegorical series including The Course of Empire (1833-1836, New-York Historical Society) and The Voyage of Life (1840, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute). These works combined scenic American subjects with historical and religious preoccupations. Cole died suddenly in Catskill in 1848, where he had moved in 1836, starting a tradition followed by many Hudson River School artists who built homes in the region.
After Cole's death, Asher B. Durand became the acknowledged leader of the New York landscape painters. He rose to the presidency of the National Academy of Design in 1845 and published a series of "Letters on Landscape Painting" in 1855-1856, which codified the standard of idealized naturalism. Durand had seen the plein-air work of John Constable in England and held Constable's naturalism up as the standard for young landscape painters, gently relegating Cole's dramatic style to the past. Cole is the founder of the Hudson River School. His View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm (1836, Metropolitan Museum of Art), known as The Oxbow, is one of the most famous American landscape paintings. It shows the Connecticut River Valley split between wild forest on the left and cultivated farmland on the right, with a tiny self-portrait of the painter at his easel in the foreground. Cole's The Course of Empire (1833-1836) is a five-painting allegory showing the rise and fall of a civilization, from savage state to desolation.
Church was Cole's prize pupil, studying with him in the 1840s. By the late 1850s he was the most famous American landscape painter. Church combined Cole's dramatic vision with a new interest in science and exploration. His Heart of the Andes (1859, Metropolitan Museum of Art) is a ten-foot canvas depicting a South American landscape with botanical and geological specificity. In 1859, the New York exhibition of this painting attracted twelve thousand people in three weeks, each paying 25 cents to see it. Church was influenced by the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, whose writings encouraged painters to join expeditions and capture the beauty of the tropical world.
Bierstadt brought the Hudson River School to the American West. He studied in Dusseldorf and joined surveying expeditions to the Rocky Mountains and Yosemite. His The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak (1863, Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Among the Sierra Nevada, California (1868, Smithsonian American Art Museum) depict the western landscape with the same epic scale and dramatic lighting that Cole and Church applied to the East. Bierstadt's paintings were enormously popular and helped shape public perception of the American West as a vast, untamed paradise.
Durand was one of the three discoverers of Thomas Cole in 1825. Originally an engraver and portrait painter, he gradually took up landscape painting in the 1830s. His Kindred Spirits (1849, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art) shows Cole and the poet William Cullen Bryant standing on a rocky ledge overlooking a Catskill landscape. The painting was commissioned by Bryant as a tribute to Cole after his death. Durand's Letters on Landscape Painting advocated direct observation from nature and helped shift the school toward a more naturalistic approach.
Gifford and Kensett represent the second generation of the Hudson River School, often described as Luminist painters. Their work is characterized by calm water, soft atmospheric light, and smooth, almost invisible brushwork. Kensett's Lake George (1869, Metropolitan Museum of Art) shows a tranquil lake with distant mountains under a hazy sky. Gifford's A Gorge in the Mountains (1862, Metropolitan Museum of Art) uses warm light to bathe a wilderness scene in golden atmosphere. Kensett, Gifford, and Church were among the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1870.
Cole's The Oxbow (1836) is the painting that best captures the Hudson River School's dual vision of America. The left side of the canvas shows stormy, wild forest. The right side shows settled farmland under clearing skies. Cole painted himself into the foreground, looking back at the viewer from his easel. The painting argues that American landscape is both sublime and cultivable, a wilderness waiting to become a nation.
Church's Heart of the Andes (1859) is the most ambitious Hudson River School painting. It depicts a South American valley with a snow-capped volcano in the background, a cross in the foreground, and meticulously rendered tropical plants throughout. Church exhibited it in a darkened room with a single spotlight on the canvas, charging admission. The painting was the most well-attended display of a single artwork in the Civil War era.
Bierstadt's The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak (1863) shows a Native American encampment in a valley surrounded by towering peaks. The painting is over six feet tall and was exhibited to paying audiences in the same way Church displayed his major works. Bierstadt's western landscapes were criticized by some for their theatrical exaggeration, but they were enormously popular with the public.
Durand's Kindred Spirits (1849) is both a landscape and a memorial. Cole stands with Bryant on a rock overlooking a Catskill gorge, gesturing toward the view. The painting was sold at auction in 2005 to the Crystal Bridges Museum for a reported $35 million, making it one of the most expensive American paintings ever sold.
Kensett's Lake George (1869) represents the Luminist wing of the school. The surface of the lake is glassy, the light is soft, and the brushwork is nearly invisible. There is no drama here. The painting is about stillness and the spiritual quality of light on water.
The Hudson River School flourished between 1825 and roughly 1870. Cole's first sketching trip in 1825 and the immediate sale of his three paintings mark the beginning. The National Academy of Design was founded in 1825, with Cole as a founding member. The Tenth Street Studio Building opened in 1858, concentrating many of the painters in one location. Cole died in 1848, and Durand assumed leadership. The second generation, including Church, Bierstadt, Kensett, and Gifford, produced their finest work between 1855 and 1875.
The school declined in the 1870s as the Barbizon School's plein-air naturalism came into vogue among American collectors. The term "Hudson River School" was coined in the 1870s as a disparaging label for what was now seen as an outmoded style. Interest revived after World War I, likely due to nationalist attitudes, declined again until the 1960s, and has grown steadily since as the Hudson Valley has regenerated. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, holds one of the largest collections, with 13 landscapes by Cole and 11 by Church.
The Hudson River School established landscape painting as America's first national art form. Before Cole, American art was dominated by portraiture and history painting. After Cole, landscape became the vehicle for expressing American identity, and the school's paintings of wilderness helped shape the conservation movement that led to the national park system.
