In 1861, a photographer named Carleton Watkins hauled a mammoth-plate camera, glass plates, chemicals, and a darkroom tent into the Yosemite Valley. The camera produced negatives 18 by 22 inches. The plates were heavy, fragile, and had to be coated with collodion and developed on site, while still wet. Watkins made 30 large-format photographs of Yosemite's granite walls and waterfalls during that trip, and the images he brought back to San Francisco were unlike anything the public had seen. They showed a landscape that most Americans knew only from written descriptions, and they showed it with a clarity and scale that painting could not match. Watkins's Yosemite photographs were presented to Congress in 1862 and directly influenced the decision to protect the valley in 1864, eight years before Yellowstone became the first national park. Landscape photography was not just recording scenery. It was creating the idea that certain landscapes were worth preserving.
Landscape photography is the practice of photographing natural scenery, and sometimes human-altered environments, as a form of artistic expression. The landscape photograph is not a passive record of a place. It is a constructed image, shaped by the photographer's choices about vantage point, timing, light, framing, and format. A landscape photographer may wait hours or days for the right conditions, may return to the same location dozens of times, and may use equipment chosen specifically for the demands of the terrain. The resulting image is as deliberate as a painting, even when it appears to be a simple record of what was there.

A landscape photograph depicts the natural environment or the built environment as its primary subject. The genre includes pristine wilderness, agricultural land, urban landscapes, industrial sites, and the altered landscapes where human activity and nature intersect. What unites these subjects is that the photographer treats the landscape itself as the subject, not as a backdrop for human activity.
Landscape photography overlaps with fine art photography but is defined by its subject matter. It also connects to landscape painting, which has a much longer history. When photography was invented in 1839, landscape painting was a dominant genre, and early landscape photographers consciously borrowed compositional strategies from painters. The difference is that the camera captures detail and tonal range that the human eye cannot perceive in a single glance, and this capacity changed what people expected a landscape image to contain.
The technical demands of landscape photography are specific. Large-format cameras, with their ability to control perspective and capture extraordinary detail, have been the tool of choice for many landscape photographers. Wide-angle lenses capture expansive vistas. Telephoto lenses compress distance and isolate details. The Zone System developed by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer was created specifically for landscape photographers working with black-and-white sheet film, allowing them to previsualize and control the tonal range of a scene from the deepest shadow to the brightest highlight.
Landscape photography began as a tool of exploration and survey. Governments and railroad companies hired photographers to document the American West, partly for practical purposes and partly to promote settlement. Carleton Watkins photographed Yosemite in 1861 and again in 1865-1866, producing mammoth-plate albumen prints of a quality that remain technically unsurpassed. Timothy O'Sullivan photographed the American West as part of the Wheeler Survey in 1871-1874, producing images of canyons and rock formations that were unlike any European landscape tradition. William Henry Jackson photographed Yellowstone in 1871 as part of the Hayden Geological Survey, and his photographs were used to convince Congress to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872.
In Britain, the tradition ran parallel. William Henry Fox Talbot's early photogenic drawings of his estate at Lacock Abbey, made in the 1830s, included landscape subjects. The Yale Center for British Art is presenting Sightlines: British Landscape Photography, 1840 to Now from July 23, 2026 to January 24, 2027, spanning nearly two centuries with over 100 photographic works. The exhibition ranges from Talbot's botanical studies to Bruce Davidson's industrial landscapes and Rachel Whiteread's charged images of altered environments. As curator Jackson Davidow notes, landscape photography "does more than document the world around us. It actively constructs it and shapes how we understand it." The Pictorialist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries treated landscape photography as an aesthetic practice, using soft focus and manipulative printing to make photographs that resembled paintings. In reaction, the Straight Photography movement of the 1920s and 1930s argued that photography should use its own capabilities: sharp focus, full tonal range, and precise detail. Edward Weston's photographs of the dunes at Oceano, California (1936) and his Point Lobos landscapes used large-format cameras to produce images of natural forms with a clarity and abstraction that Pictorialism could not achieve.
Ansel Adams is the most famous landscape photographer in history. His images of the American West, particularly Yosemite, are recognized worldwide. Adams used large-format cameras and the Zone System to control tonal range with scientific precision. Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941) is his most reproduced photograph: a dark sky, a white moon, a village glowing in the last light. Adams could not find his light meter when he made the image, so he used the known luminance of the moon to set his exposure. The photograph is a demonstration of what a landscape photographer can do when technical mastery meets a moment of extraordinary light.
In 1975, the exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape at the International Museum of Photography in Rochester, New York, redefined landscape photography. The exhibition, curated by William Jenkins, featured photographers including Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, and Stephen Shore, who photographed the American landscape not as wilderness but as a place shaped by suburban development, industrial activity, and human use. The show argued that the landscape was no longer pristine and that landscape photography should acknowledge this fact.
Robert Adams's photographs of the Colorado landscape, including The New West (1974), show tract houses, shopping centers, and highways encroaching on open land. The images are not polemical. They are quiet, formally precise, and deeply sad. Richard Misrach's Border Cantos and Petrochemical America projects photograph the environmental damage caused by industry along the Gulf Coast and the U.S.-Mexico border. Joel Sternfeld's American Prospects (1978-1983) used an 8x10 camera to photograph the American landscape with humor and an eye for serendipitous encounters, balancing natural splendor with evidence of environmental destruction and suburban encroachment.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City is presenting American Prospects and Landscape Photography, 1839 to Today, opening in August 2026, with 80 works that explore the changing relationship with the natural world. Sternfeld's color photographs serve as the focal point, contextualized by works from Carleton Watkins, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, and William Eggleston. Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York presented Manifest and Sublime from July 8 to August 7, 2026, an exhibition spanning the history of American landscape photography from Carleton Watkins's mammoth plate albumen prints of Yosemite to Binh Danh's contemporary daguerreotypes of the same location. The exhibition traced how the American landscape has been depicted from pristine wilderness to commodified space, including work by Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, Richard Misrach, Mitch Epstein, and Sky Hopinka. Watkins's mammoth-plate photographs of Yosemite, made between 1861 and 1866, are the foundation of American landscape photography. His image Yosemite Valley from the "Best General View" (1866) captures the valley's granite walls with a clarity and tonal range that still astonishes. Watkins used a camera that produced 18-by-22-inch negatives, and the prints from those negatives show detail that no painter could match. His work was shown to Congress and directly influenced the protection of Yosemite in 1864.
Adams's Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941) is the most famous landscape photograph ever made. The image captures a village under a dark sky with a rising moon, the white crosses of a cemetery glowing in the last light. Adams used an 8x10 view camera and set the exposure based on the known luminance of the moon. His Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park (1944) shows the valley emerging from clouds after a storm, with Half Dome visible in the distance. Adams's work is held in every major photography collection in the United States.
Weston's landscape work, though less famous than his still lifes and nudes, is equally significant. His photographs of the dunes at Oceano, California (1936) use the large-format camera to capture the curves and textures of sand with an abstraction that approaches pure form. Weston was a member of Group f/64, which advocated for sharp focus and full tonal range as the basis of photographic art. His Point Lobos photographs of rocks and cypress trees on the California coast show the same precision applied to landscape.
Robert Adams's The New West (1974) photographed the Colorado landscape as it was being transformed by suburban development. His images of tract houses, parking lots, and newly planted trees against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains are not angry. They are observant. Adams shows a landscape that is neither pristine nor destroyed but somewhere in between, and he asks the viewer to look at it honestly. His work is held in the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery and the Getty Museum.
Sternfeld's American Prospects (1978-1983) used an 8x10 camera to photograph the American landscape in color, with an eye for the accidental juxtapositions that reveal how Americans live in and alter their environment. McLean, Virginia, December 1978 shows a fireman buying a pumpkin at a farm stand while a house burns in the background. The image is not staged. Sternfeld came upon the scene while photographing the landscape and made the picture. The photograph is a landscape that contains a human drama, and it asks whether the two can be separated.
Contemporary landscape photography is increasingly engaged with environmental questions. The tradition that began with Watkins and Adams, who used photography to advocate for the protection of wilderness, has evolved into a practice that documents climate change, industrial extraction, and the transformation of the land by human activity. Edward Burtynsky's large-format photographs of quarries, oil fields, and manufacturing sites, including the Anthropocene project (2018), use the visual language of landscape photography to show landscapes that have been entirely reshaped by industry. David Maisel's aerial photographs of mining sites and dried lake beds produce images that are visually beautiful and environmentally devastating at the same time.
The Yale Center for British Art's Sightlines exhibition in 2026 makes this point explicitly. The show includes 19th-century botanical studies alongside contemporary images of industrial landscapes, arguing that landscape photography has always been a tool for understanding the relationship between people and the land, and that this relationship has become more urgent as environmental degradation accelerates.
Landscape photography connects to several other glossary entries. Fine art photography is the broader practice it belongs to. The Zone System was developed by Ansel Adams specifically for landscape photography with large-format film. Landscape painting is the older tradition from which landscape photography borrowed its compositional strategies. Film photography and digital photography are the two dominant mediums. When you look at a landscape photograph, pay attention to where the photographer stood. The vantage point is the first decision a landscape photographer makes, and it determines everything that follows. Watkins stood in the valley floor and looked up. Adams stood at a specific point on a road and caught the moon at a specific angle. Robert Adams stood at the edge of a subdivision and looked toward the mountains. Each position is a statement about what the photographer wanted to say about the land.
