Edition: The Set of Identical Prints From a Single Plate or Screen

In July 2026, Ai Weiwei released a print called "A Tree." It was his first drawing in more than 50 years. The print was a one-color silkscreen with a hand-embossed border on Somerset Velvet White paper, produced by CIRCA and available for purchase between July 9 and September 9, 2026. It came with a numbered, stamped, and dated certificate of authenticity and cost 450 pounds. An edition is a set of identical prints produced from a single matrix: a copper plate, a woodblock, a lithographic stone, a silkscreen, or a digital file. Each print in the edition is called an impression. The edition size is the total number of impressions produced, and in modern practice this number is fixed before printing begins. Each impression is numbered, typically as a fraction: the top number is the impression's position in the sequence, and the bottom number is the total edition size. What Is an Edition and How Does It Work?

An edition begins with a matrix. In etching, the matrix is a copper plate. In woodcut, it is a carved block of wood. In lithography, it is a limestone block or aluminum plate. In screen printing, it is a mesh screen with a stencil. The artist prepares the matrix, and then impressions are pulled from it. Each impression transfers the image from the matrix to paper. Because the matrix wears down slightly with each impression, prints made early in the run may be sharper than those made later, though modern materials and techniques have largely eliminated this variation.

Once the edition is printed, the matrix is typically destroyed or cancelled. A cancelled plate may be scored with a line to prevent further printing. A Brief History of Editioning

Numbering editions is a recent practice. For most of printmaking's history, prints were not numbered at all. Rembrandt pulled impressions from his copper plates as he needed them, revising the plates between runs. There was no fixed edition size. Whistler produced etchings in small batches, varying the inking and paper from batch to batch. The idea that an edition should be a fixed, numbered set of identical impressions emerged in the late 19th century and became standard practice only in the mid-1960s.

The numbering system was a response to the commercialization of printmaking. As prints became collectible, buyers needed assurance that the supply was limited. A numbered edition with a declared size provides that assurance. The practice was codified by print publishers and galleries in the 1960s, particularly in the American screen printing boom led by studios like ULAE and Gemini G.E.L., which produced editions for artists like Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella.

Picasso's printmaking career illustrates the transition. His early etchings and lithographs were not numbered. By the time he began working with the Mourlot studio in the 1940s and 1950s, editions were being numbered, though the practice was not yet universal. Edition Size and Value

Edition size directly affects price. Smaller editions command higher prices because they are scarcer. The Ipek example points to a tension within the concept of an edition. An edition is supposed to be a set of identical impressions. But when the artist intervenes on each print after pulling it, as Ipek did by hand-engraving a cut on the surface of each sheet, the prints are no longer identical. They are unique works that share a common base. This hybrid practice, somewhere between an edition and a series of unique works, is increasingly common in contemporary printmaking.

Types of Editions

A limited edition has a fixed, declared number of impressions. Once the edition is complete, no more are printed. An open edition has no set limit: impressions are produced as long as there is demand. Open editions are generally less valuable because the supply is theoretically unlimited. A timed edition, like the Ai Weiwei "A Tree" release, is available for a fixed period, and the edition size is determined by how many are sold during that window. This model, enabled by digital sales platforms, creates a different kind of scarcity: the buyer does not know the final edition size at the time of purchase.

A posthumous edition is one printed after the artist's death, usually from a matrix the artist prepared during their lifetime.
