In the summer of 1905, Henri Matisse and Andre Derain spent nine weeks in a fishing village called Collioure on the French Mediterranean. They painted the harbor, the boats, the hills, and each other. When they returned to Paris and hung their canvases at the Salon d'Automne that October, a critic named Louis Vauxcelles looked at the room, saw a classical sculpture sitting among the violently colored paintings, and wrote "Donatello chez les fauves." Donatello among the wild beasts. The name stuck. Fauvism was born, and it would become the first avant-garde movement of the 20th century.
Fauvism is a style of painting in which color is liberated from its descriptive function and used as an independent expressive force. A face can be green. A tree can be red. A sky can be orange. The Fauves did not invent color, but they stripped away the expectation that color should describe reality. Where the Impressionists had used broken color to capture the optical effects of light, the Fauves used pure, unmixed pigment straight from the tube to express emotional sensation. The movement lasted barely three years, from 1905 to 1908, but it opened the door to every color-driven movement that followed.

Fauvism is not a style with a manifesto or a set of rules. It was never an organized group. The artists who are now called Fauves were friends, colleagues, and rivals who happened to be painting in a similar way at the same time in Paris. What united them was a shared conviction that color could be the primary subject of a painting, not merely a tool for describing objects.
The technique is straightforward in principle. The painter selects colors based on emotional response rather than optical observation. If a subject feels warm, the painter uses warm colors regardless of what the subject actually looks like. If a shadow feels blue, the painter paints it blue, even if the actual shadow is gray. The paint is applied in flat, saturated areas, often straight from the tube with minimal mixing or blending. Brushwork is direct and visible. There is no attempt to create the illusion of three-dimensional form through gradual tonal transitions, as in academic painting. Form is suggested by the shape of color areas and the contrast between them.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's 2023-2024 exhibition Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism presented 65 works from that pivotal summer in Collioure and examined how the two artists manipulated color in radical ways. Fauvism emerged in Paris in the first years of the 20th century, a moment when the art world was still processing the shock of Post-Impressionism. Paul Cezanne had shown that painting could be built from patches of color rather than drawn outlines. Vincent van Gogh had demonstrated that color could carry emotional force. Paul Gauguin had abandoned natural color entirely, painting trees red and grass yellow in Tahiti. The Fauves absorbed all of this and pushed it further.
Gustave Moreau, a Symbolist painter and teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, was an important influence on Matisse and other Fauves. Moreau encouraged his students to use color imaginatively rather than descriptively. Matisse later said that Moreau "did not set us on the right roads but off the roads. He disturbed our complacency." Matisse also studied with the academic painter Adolphe William Bouguereau, but rejected the smooth, polished surfaces of academic painting in favor of direct, expressive color.
The immediate catalyst for Fauvism was the summer of 1905 in Collioure. Matisse invited Derain to join him in the small Mediterranean fishing village. They worked side by side, painting the same subjects and exchanging ideas. The light in Collioure was intense, and the colors of the landscape were vivid. Both artists responded by amplifying what they saw, pushing colors beyond anything the eye could observe. When they returned to Paris, Matisse's wife Amelie brought their paintings to the Salon d'Automne in a wheelbarrow.
The Salon d'Automne had been founded in 1903 as an alternative to the conservative Salon run by the Academie des Beaux-Arts. It was juried by artists themselves and provided a venue for avant-garde work. The 1905 Salon d'Automne was where Fauvism was publicly launched. Matisse's Woman with a Hat (1905), a portrait of Amelie with a green stripe down her face and colors that had no relationship to natural skin tones, became the focal point of the scandal. Matisse was the leader of Fauvism, though he would have rejected the label. He was the oldest of the group and the most theoretically grounded. Matisse saw color as a means of creating equilibrium in a painting. His Woman with a Hat (1905, SFMOMA) and Open Window, Collioure (1905, National Gallery of Art, Washington) are the defining works of Fauvism. The open window painting shows a view through a window to the sea, but the colors are entirely subjective: the boats are pink, the water is blue-green, the sky is a wash of pale color. Matisse continued to develop his use of color throughout his career, long after Fauvism ended. His The Red Studio (1911, MoMA) and his later cut-outs pushed color even further toward pure expression.
Derain was Matisse's partner in Collioure. His Charing Cross Bridge (1906, Musee d'Orsay) and The Turning Road, L'Estaque (1906, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) show Fauvism at its most exuberant. The Turning Road uses pure, unmixed colors applied in bold strokes to depict a road curving through a village. The trees are orange and red, the road is yellow, the sky is a patchwork of blues and greens. Derain also painted a portrait of Matisse during the Collioure summer, which was shown alongside Matisse's work at the 1905 Salon. After 1907, Derain moved away from Fauvism toward a more restrained, classical style.
Vlaminck was the most instinctive of the Fauves. He claimed never to have visited a museum before he started painting. His Restaurant de la Machine (1905, Musee d'Orsay) and Barges on the Seine (1905-1906, private collection) use thick, aggressive brushwork and colors squeezed directly from the tube. Vlaminck met Derain in 1900, and they shared a studio in Chatou, a suburb of Paris. Derain introduced Vlaminck to Matisse in 1901, and Vlaminck's raw approach to color influenced the direction the group took.
Braque was a Fauve before he became a Cubist. His Fauve paintings from 1906 to 1907, such as Landscape at L'Estaque (1906, Musee National d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou), show the saturated color and bold brushwork of the movement. Braque's Fauvism was more structured and controlled than Vlaminck's. By 1908, Braque had shifted to the muted browns and greens of early Cubism, working alongside Picasso. The transition from Fauvism to Cubism in Braque's work shows how quickly artists moved through movements in this period.
Van Dongen brought Fauvism to portraiture. His Woman with Black Stockings (1907, private collection) and his portraits of Parisian nightlife figures used aggressive, unnatural colors applied in broad, flat areas. Van Dongen's work was more commercially successful during the Fauve years than Matisse's, and his portraits of fashionable women helped spread the Fauve aesthetic to a wider audience.
Fauvism had no formal beginning and no formal end. The movement is generally dated from the 1905 Salon d'Automne to roughly 1908, when most of the artists involved had moved on to other approaches. In those three years, the Fauves produced some of the most color-intense paintings in Western art history.
The first phase was the Collioure summer of 1905. Matisse and Derain worked together, developing the approach that would define the movement. The second phase was the 1905 Salon d'Automne, where the work was publicly exhibited and named. The third phase was 1906 to 1907, when other artists adopted the style and it spread through group exhibitions at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. By 1908, Matisse was moving toward a more structured approach, Derain was experimenting with Cezanne-like form, Braque had begun working with Picasso on Cubism, and Vlaminck was retreating into a darker, more personal style.
The Kunstmuseum Basel's 2023 exhibition Matisse, Derain, and their Friends was the first survey exhibition on the Fauves staged in Switzerland in decades. The exhibition and its catalogue challenged the traditional male-dominated view of the movement, drawing attention to female artists on the Paris art scene including Emilie Charmy, Alice Bailly, and Marie Laurencin. Fauvism's influence is out of all proportion to its brief lifespan. The movement demonstrated that color could function independently of subject matter. This idea runs through German Expressionism, where the artists of Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter adopted Fauve color intensity for their own emotional purposes. Kandinsky, who exhibited with the Fauves, carried the principle further into pure abstraction. Matisse himself continued to develop the Fauve approach to color for the rest of his career, producing the cut-outs of the 1940s and early 1950s that are the ultimate distillation of color as subject.
The Grand Palais in Paris mounted a major Matisse exhibition in 2026, covering the last 13 years of the artist's life and including more than 300 works. The exhibition, organized by the Centre Pompidou, explored how Matisse's late cut-outs were the final expression of the color revolution that began in Collioure in 1905. Fauvism grew out of broken color and the color experiments of the Post-Impressionists. It is closely related to Expressionism, which took the Fauve use of color and applied it to more psychologically charged subjects.
