On March 4, 2026, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe launched a website called Access O'Keeffe. It was the culmination of a decade of work. The site contains records of more than 2,200 works by O'Keeffe, searchable by color, shape, or medium, with high-resolution images, exhibition histories, archival materials, and research data. It is built on a linked data platform using the open Linked Art data standard. More than 130 organizations contributed updated images and information, including the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo. The museum's director, Cody Hartley, said: "Access O'Keeffe transforms more than the way we interact with O'Keeffe's art and legacy. It revolutionizes the catalogue raisonne as we know it." A catalogue raisonne is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all known works by an artist. The French term means "reasoned catalogue" or "classified catalogue." It is the definitive reference for an artist's oeuvre: every painting, drawing, sculpture, or print attributed to the artist is listed with its dimensions, medium, date, provenance, exhibition history, bibliography, and current location. A catalogue raisonne is the closest thing the art world has to a complete biography of an artist's output. Inclusion in the catalogue is itself a statement of authenticity, and exclusion can destroy a work's value overnight.

The catalogue raisonne serves three functions. It is a scholarly tool, providing researchers with the data needed to study an artist's development. It is an authentication tool, since inclusion in the catalogue is a statement that the work is by the named artist. With Access O'Keeffe, we're flipping that idea on its head, transforming it into a living dialogue where new voices, discoveries, and perspectives can continuously reshape what we know about Georgia O'Keeffe." The platform allows visitors to browse by color, shape, or medium, trace historic exhibitions, and download images including letters O'Keeffe wrote and photographs she captured.
The Wildenstein Plattner Institute (WPI) has been a leader in digital catalogue raisonne publishing. In March 2026, WPI released the Eva Gonzales Catalogue Raisonne Project, the first digital catalogue raisonne for a female artist on its portal. Gonzales was one of the few women associated with the Impressionist movement. Schulman describes it as the result of about twenty years of research, noting that "lost or new works surface, as has been regularly the case since the launch of this digital catalogue raisonne in 2019." Compiling a catalogue raisonne is a multi-year or multi-decade project. The compiler begins by gathering every known work by the artist, drawing on museum collections, private collections, auction records, exhibition catalogues, archival documents, and earlier scholarship. In 2026, the O'Keeffe Museum transformed Lynes's work into the Access O'Keeffe digital platform, updating it with contributions from 130 institutions and making it freely available online. The catalogue raisonne is the backbone of art historical scholarship. It provides the data on which all other research depends: without knowing what an artist produced and when, you cannot study their development, their influences, or their legacy. For the art market, the catalogue raisonne is a gatekeeper. A painting that appears in the catalogue is considered authentic. A painting that does not is suspect. This gives the compiler enormous power, and that power is sometimes contested. The digital format is democratizing access. Where a print catalogue might exist in a few hundred library copies, a digital catalogue is available to anyone with an internet connection. The WPI's digital corpus methodology provides "full transparency on the progress of research," allowing users to see which works have been examined and which are still under review. This transparency was impossible in the print era.
The catalogue raisonne is connected to authenticity, since inclusion in the catalogue is itself an authentication. It depends on provenance research, which traces the ownership history of each work.
