What Is Ceramics and How Does It Work?
Ceramics begins with clay, a naturally occurring material composed of fine-grained minerals, primarily hydrous aluminum silicates, that becomes plastic when mixed with water. Plasticity is the key property: wet clay can be shaped, and it holds that shape until it dries or is fired. When clay dries, the water evaporates and the particles bind together through a process called leather-hardening. The object is now fragile but can be handled, carved, and decorated. When clay is fired in a kiln at temperatures between 600 and 1,400 degrees Celsius, the mineral particles undergo chemical changes that permanently transform the material. At low temperatures, the clay becomes earthenware, porous and relatively soft. At higher temperatures, the clay vitrifies, meaning the minerals partially melt and fuse together, producing a denser, less porous, and more durable material.
The three main ceramic bodies are defined by their composition and firing temperature. Earthenware is fired between 900 and 1,100 degrees Celsius. It remains porous after firing, which means it must be glazed to hold liquids. Terracotta (Italian for "baked earth") is a type of earthenware, typically red-brown from iron oxide content. Stoneware is fired between 1,200 and 1,300 degrees Celsius. It vitrifies partially, becoming dense and non-porous without glazing. Porcelain is fired between 1,260 and 1,400 degrees Celsius. It vitrifies completely, producing a white, translucent material that is the most refined and technically demanding ceramic body.
Glazes are glass-forming coatings applied to ceramic surfaces. A glaze is a mixture of silica (the glass former), fluxes (which lower the melting point), and stabilizers (which control the glaze's flow). When fired, the glaze melts into a thin glass layer that bonds to the clay surface. Glazes provide waterproofing, color, and surface texture. The chemistry of glazes is complex, involving variables of temperature, atmosphere (oxidation or reduction), and the interaction of metallic oxides that produce color. Iron oxide produces greens, blues, browns, and blacks depending on the firing atmosphere. Copper oxide produces reds in reduction and greens in oxidation. Cobalt oxide produces blue.
Origins and History
The earliest known ceramic objects are the Gravettian figurines from Dolni Vestonice in the Czech Republic, dating to approximately 28,000 BCE. The most famous, the Venus of Dolni Vestonice, is a small female figure fired in a simple kiln. These are not vessels but sculptural objects, suggesting that ceramics began as art rather than utility.
The first pottery vessels appeared during the Jomon period in Japan, around 14,000 BCE. Jomon pottery is among the oldest in the world, predating agricultural settlement. The Jomon people were hunter-gatherers who produced elaborately decorated vessels with impressed cord patterns (jomon means "cord-marked"). In China, ceramics reached extraordinary technical sophistication during the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. Song dynasty Ru ware, Guan ware, and Ding ware are considered the pinnacle of Chinese ceramics, with subtle glazes and refined forms that have never been surpassed. The development of porcelain during the Tang dynasty, using kaolin clay fired at high temperatures, gave China a monopoly on porcelain production that lasted until the 18th century. The Jingdezhen kilns became the center of porcelain production, supplying the imperial court and exporting across the world.
In Korea, the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) produced celadon ware with jade-green glazes that were prized in Chinese imperial courts. The Joseon dynasty (1392-1897) shifted to white porcelain, reflecting Confucian aesthetics of restraint and simplicity. In the West, ancient Greek pottery (c. 1000-300 BCE) developed black-figure and red-figure techniques, where figures were painted in slip (liquid clay) that turned black during firing, against the red clay ground. The Islamic world developed tin-glazed earthenware, which produced a white opaque surface suitable for painted decoration. This technique spread to Italy, where it became maiolica, to the Netherlands, where it became Delftware, and to France, where it became faience. The 16th-century Iznik pottery of Ottoman Turkey, with its red clay body and brilliant underglaze colors, is among the most accomplished ceramics of the period.
In the 20th century, the studio pottery movement rejected industrial production in favor of individual craft. Bernard Leach, who trained in Japan and established the Leach Pottery in St Ives, England, in 1920, bridged Eastern and Western ceramic traditions. Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, both working in London after fleeing Nazi Europe, brought modernist aesthetics to ceramics, producing vessels that were functional in origin but sculptural in effect. Lucie Rie (1902-1995)
Rie fled Vienna for London in 1938 and established a studio that produced some of the most influential ceramics of the 20th century. Rie's work bridges functional pottery and sculptural object, demonstrating that a vessel can be both useful and formally inventive. Peter Voulkos (1924-2002)
Voulkos broke ceramics out of the functional vessel tradition in the 1950s and 1960s. His large-scale stoneware sculptures, built from thrown and hand-built sections, slashed, punctured, and assembled, brought Abstract Expressionist energy to clay. Voulkos taught at the Otis Art Institute (now Otis College of Art and Design) and the University of California, Berkeley, where his influence shaped a generation of American ceramic artists.
Betty Woodman (1930-2018)
Woodman combined ceramic vessels with painted decoration in works that referenced Etruscan, Greek, and Baroque ceramics while engaging with painting and sculpture. Takuro Kuwata (b. 1984)
