On April 15, 1900, the Paris Universal Exposition opened to the public. Over the next seven months, 50 million people visited the fairgrounds along the Seine. They saw the largest Ferris wheel in the world, a moving sidewalk, electric lights illuminating entire buildings for the first time, and pavilions from every major nation. They saw the first public projection of a motion picture. They ate at restaurants serving food from Algeria, Indochina, and Senegal, France's colonial possessions. The exposition was the high-water mark of the Belle Époque, the period of peace, prosperity, and cultural innovation that France enjoyed from 1871 to 1914. No one at the fair knew that this world would be destroyed fourteen years later by a war that would kill 1.4 million French soldiers.
The Belle Époque, French for "Beautiful Era," was a period of French and European history that began with the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 and ended with the outbreak of World War I in 1914. It was characterized by optimism, regional peace, economic prosperity, and an extraordinary flowering of art, literature, music, and technology. The term was not used during the period itself. It was applied retrospectively, after the devastation of two world wars made the pre-1914 years look like a golden age. The historian Dominique Kalifa, in his book The Belle Époque published by Columbia University Press, argues that the term was not widely used until the 1950s, during the postwar economic boom known as the "Thirty Glorious Years." The Belle Époque was not an art movement. It was a historical period, and it produced a wider range of art than any single movement could contain. During these four decades, Paris was the cultural capital of the Western world. The city saw the final flowering of Impressionism, the rise of Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Fauvism, and the beginnings of Cubism. It saw the construction of the Eiffel Tower, the Paris Métro, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, and the Opéra Garnier. Three Universal Expositions, in 1878, 1889, and 1900, brought millions of visitors to Paris and showcased the latest innovations in art, technology, and commerce.
The period was made possible by political stability. After the Franco-Prussian War and the violent suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871, the French Third Republic settled into a period of relative calm. A series of short-lived governments held power, but the regime itself was stable. Industrial output tripled. Railways expanded. Wages rose. The middle class grew, and with it a market for art, entertainment, and consumer goods. The Belle Époque was the era of the department store, the café-concert, the bicycle, the automobile, and the electric streetlamp.
It was also an era of inequality. The prosperity was concentrated in the upper and middle classes. The working class that built the Eiffel Tower and staffed the factories lived in crowded conditions. The colonial expansion that enriched France was built on exploitation. The optimism of the Belle Époque was real, but it was not universal.
The physical Paris that we recognize today was largely built during the Belle Époque. Baron Haussmann's renovation of the city, begun under Napoleon III in the 1850s and 1860s, had replaced medieval streets with grand boulevards, parks, and public squares. During the Belle Époque, these new public spaces became the setting for a culture of leisure and display. The boulevards were filled with cafés, theaters, and department stores. The parks were filled with people strolling, sitting on benches, and watching each other.
The Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Exposition, was the period's most controversial structure. At 300 meters, it was the tallest building in the world and the first structure in Paris taller than Notre-Dame. Many Parisians hated it. Guy de Maupassant reportedly ate lunch in the tower's restaurant every day because it was the only place in Paris where he did not have to see it. The tower became a symbol of the Belle Époque's faith in engineering and progress.
Hector Guimard's Art Nouveau Métro entrances, installed beginning in 1900, brought the new organic style into the daily life of Parisians. The entrances were cast in iron and shaped like plant stems, with lamps that looked like flower buds. By 1912, the enthusiasm for the style had faded, and the city began replacing them with simpler designs. A few survive, most notably at the Porte Dauphine station.
The Belle Époque produced an extraordinary range of art. The period began with the Impressionists still active. Claude Monet was painting his Haystacks series (1890-1891) and his Rouen Cathedral series (1892-1894) during the height of the Belle Époque. Pierre-Auguste Renoir was producing his most popular works, including Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881). Edgar Degas was painting ballet dancers and racecourses, scenes of Parisian leisure.
The 1880s and 1890s saw the rise of Post-Impressionism. Vincent van Gogh lived in Paris from 1886 to 1888, absorbing the influence of Impressionism before moving to Arles. Paul Cézanne was working in isolation in Provence, painting the Mont Sainte-Victoire landscapes that would later influence Cubism. Georges Seurat developed pointillism, exhibiting A Sunday on La Grande Jatte at the final Impressionist exhibition in 1886.
The 1890s belonged to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He painted the nightlife of Montmartre, the cabarets, the dance halls, and the brothels. His At the Moulin Rouge (1892-1895) shows the artist himself among the patrons of the famous cabaret, his face distorted and grotesque. Toulouse-Lautrec's posters, printed in color lithography, turned the advertising of entertainment into fine art. His poster for the Moulin Rouge, Moulin Rouge: La Goulue (1891), shows the dancer La Goulue kicking her legs as a crowd watches. The poster was pasted all over Paris and made Toulouse-Lautrec famous overnight.
The period also produced a school of painters who documented the life of the Parisian elite. Jean Béraud painted Parisian street scenes and café interiors with photographic precision. Giovanni Boldini painted "swagger portraits" of society women, his brushwork loose and theatrical. John Singer Sargent, an American living in Paris and London, painted the portraits that defined the era's style. His Madame X (1884), a portrait of Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, caused a scandal at the Paris Salon for its low neckline and suggestive pose. Toulouse-Lautrec was the painter of Belle Époque nightlife. His posters and paintings of the Moulin Rouge, the Folies Bergère, and the brothels of Paris documented the entertainment culture of the period with honesty and without judgment. He was a fixture of Montmartre, where he drank alongside the dancers and performers he painted. His lithographs revolutionized poster design and influenced the development of Art Nouveau.
Monet's late work is a Belle Époque phenomenon. The Haystacks (1890-1891), the Rouen Cathedral series (1892-1894), and the Water Lilies series (begun 1896, continued until his death) were all produced during this period. Monet's garden at Giverny, which he began cultivating in 1883, became his primary subject. The water garden with its Japanese bridge was itself a product of the Belle Époque's fascination with Japanese art and design.
Rodin was the dominant sculptor of the Belle Époque. The Thinker (1880, enlarged 1904) was originally conceived as part of The Gates of Hell, a monumental doorway based on Dante's Inferno. The Burghers of Calais (1884-1895) was commissioned by the city of Calais to commemorate six citizens who sacrificed themselves during the Hundred Years' War. Rodin's sculpture rejected the smooth idealism of academic sculpture in favor of rough, expressive surfaces that showed the artist's hand.
Bernhardt was not a visual artist but the most famous actress of the period, and she shaped the visual culture of the Belle Époque. Alphonse Mucha's posters of Bernhardt, beginning with Gismonda in 1894, defined the Art Nouveau style. Bernhardt commissioned Mucha for six years, and his posters of her in roles like La Dame aux Camélias and Medea were the most visible artworks in Paris.
Bonnard was a member of the Nabis, a group of Post-Impressionist painters who worked in Paris during the 1890s. His France-Champagne poster (1891) won him immediate recognition and led to a career in painting and printmaking. Bonnard's interiors and street scenes capture the domestic and public life of Belle Époque Paris with warmth and intimacy.
The Belle Époque ended on August 3, 1914, when Germany declared war on France. The war that followed killed 1.4 million French soldiers, devastated the northern regions of France, and destroyed the optimism that had sustained the period. The world that emerged after 1918 was different in every respect. The carefree culture of the cabarets and boulevards gave way to the disillusionment of the 1920s and the economic collapse of the 1930s.
The term "Belle Époque" was applied to the period in retrospect, as a way of contrasting the peace and prosperity before 1914 with the devastation that followed. The nostalgia for the period has been a powerful force in French culture, producing films, books, and exhibitions that celebrate its art and atmosphere. But the nostalgia can obscure the inequality, colonialism, and political instability that were also part of the period.
The Musée d'Orsay in Paris, housed in the former Gare d'Orsay built for the 1900 Exposition, holds the world's largest collection of Belle Époque art. The museum's collection includes works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Bonnard. The Musée de l'Orangerie holds Monet's late Water Lilies installations. The Musée Rodin preserves the sculptor's house and studio in Paris. The Eiffel Tower still stands, as do the surviving Guimard Métro entrances.
