In 1984, the Museum of Modern Art in New York opened an exhibition that became one of the most controversial in the museum's history. "Primitivism in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern," curated by William Rubin, juxtaposed more than 200 non-Western "tribal" objects with modern paintings and sculptures by Picasso, Matisse, Brancusi, and others. The exhibition was a popular success, but it drew fierce criticism. The art historian Thomas McEvilley, writing in Artforum, accused the exhibition of stripping non-Western objects of their cultural context and presenting them as raw material for Western modernism. The debate that followed has shaped every subsequent discussion of Primitivism. A 2025-2026 seminar at Leiden University, "Art and the Other: Primitivism in Perspective," continues this examination, asking whether Primitivism is "still a convincing framework to evaluate and compare art from different cultures" in the 21st century. Primitivism is the borrowing, adaptation, or appropriation of non-Western and tribal art by Western modern artists. The term refers to a pattern that began in the late 19th century, when European artists encountered African, Oceanic, and Indigenous American objects through colonial trade, ethnographic museums, and commercial galleries. Artists including Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and the German Expressionists found in these objects qualities they felt Western art had lost: directness, emotional power, abstraction from nature, and freedom from academic convention. The term "Primitivism" itself, with its implication that non-Western cultures were "primitive" or less developed, is now considered highly problematic. The Leiden University seminar notes that "as a direct product of Europe's imperial and colonial past, the term with its derogatory connotations fell out of favor by the late twentieth century and is now considered to be highly problematic."
This entry covers what Primitivism is, how it shaped modern art, which artists were involved, and how the concept is being critically reassessed today.
What Is Primitivism?
Primitivism in art refers to the Western interest in and borrowing from non-Western, tribal, or "primitive" art. The word "primitive" was used by 19th-century Europeans to describe art that they considered outside the Western tradition of naturalistic representation. The term was applied to African masks, Oceanic carvings, Indigenous American objects, and also to early Italian and Netherlandish painting, which was considered "primitive" relative to the High Renaissance. Robert Goldwater's 1938 book Primitivism in Modern Art, the first major scholarly treatment of the subject, used the term in this broad sense.
The concept has two dimensions that need to be separated. First, there is the historical fact: Western modern artists did encounter, collect, and borrow from non-Western art, and this borrowing had a demonstrable impact on their work. Second, there is the ideological framework: the assumption that non-Western art was "primitive" in the sense of being earlier, simpler, or more instinctive than Western art. The first is a matter of art history. The second is a matter of colonial ideology, and it is what makes Primitivism a contested concept.
Origins and History
Goldwater's Codification (1938)
Robert Goldwater, an American art historian, published Primitivism in Modern Art in 1938. The book was the first systematic study of how modern European artists had been influenced by non-Western art. Goldwater identified three types of Primitivism: the borrowing of formal elements (shapes, patterns, abstraction), the borrowing of emotional or expressive qualities (directness, intensity), and the borrowing of conceptual approaches (art as ritual, art as communal rather than individual). Goldwater's book established the framework that would dominate the field for decades, though its assumptions about "primitive" art have since been heavily criticized.
Gauguin and the South Pacific (1891-1903)
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was the first major modern artist to consciously seek inspiration in non-Western art. He abandoned his career as a stockbroker and his family in Copenhagen, moved to Pont-Aven in Brittany, and then sailed to Tahiti in 1891 in search of a culture he believed was uncorrupted by Western civilization. Gauguin's Tahitian paintings, including Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897), combine Western painting techniques with Polynesian subject matter and motifs borrowed from Maori, Javanese, and Buddhist art. Gauguin's Primitivism was self-conscious and ideological. He believed that Western civilization had become over-intellectualized and that "primitive" cultures retained a spiritual authenticity the West had lost. This belief was romantic and, in many respects, factually wrong. Tahiti had been a French colony for 50 years when Gauguin arrived, and the "untouched" culture he sought had already been profoundly affected by colonialism.
Picasso and African Art (1907)
Pablo Picasso's encounter with African art is the most consequential moment in the history of Primitivism. In May or June 1907, Picasso visited the Trocadero Museum of Ethnography in Paris (now the Musee de l'Homme) and saw African masks and sculptures. He later told Francoise Gilot: "The masks were not sculptures like any other. Not at all. They were magic things. The Negro pieces were intercessors, mediators, against everything, against unknown, threatening spirits." The visit directly influenced Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), the painting that launched Cubism. The two right-hand figures in the painting have faces derived from African masks, with frontal and profile features combined in a single face. Picasso's borrowing was not a matter of copying forms. It was a fundamental rethinking of how a painting could represent the human figure, using the conceptual approach of African art (which combined multiple viewpoints in a single image) rather than the Western tradition of single-viewpoint naturalism.
The question of whether Picasso's use of African art was appropriation or homage has been debated for decades. Picasso himself was contradictory on the subject. He acknowledged the influence but resisted being labeled an African-inspired artist, reportedly saying: "African art? Never heard of it." The 2025 exhibition "Imaginary Ancestors" at Almine Rech Gallery in New York restaged the 1933 Durand-Ruel exhibition of Fang sculptures alongside paintings by Derain and Pechstein, and presented contemporary works by Joe Bradley, Ana Mendieta, and Erika Verzutti alongside pieces from Picasso's personal collection of African art. German Expressionism and "Primitive" Directness
The German Expressionist groups Die Brucke (founded 1905) and Der Blaue Reiter (founded 1911) embraced non-Western art as a model of direct, unmediated expression. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Erich Heckel collected African and Oceanic sculptures and incorporated their angular forms and bold colors into their woodcuts and paintings. The Brucke artists saw in "primitive" art a rejection of bourgeois refinement that matched their own anti-academic stance. Kirchner's Street, Dresden (1908) shows the influence of African sculpture in its elongated figures and mask-like faces.
The 2025-2026 exhibition "Telluric and Primitive" at the Museo Carmen Thyssen Malaga (October 7, 2025 to March 1, 2026) traces a specifically Spanish version of Primitivism, from the School of Vallecas in the 1920s through Miquel Barcelo. The exhibition shows how Spanish artists "went back to cave, indigenous and primitive art in a historical context that was pushing for a fresh start" after the Civil War, using earth, primal signs, and organic forms as sources of artistic renewal. The 1984 MoMA Exhibition and Its Critics
William Rubin's 1984 exhibition "Primitivism in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern" at MoMA was the largest and most ambitious attempt to present the relationship between non-Western art and modernism. The exhibition displayed tribal objects alongside modern paintings and sculptures, arguing for formal "affinities" between them. Thomas McEvilley's critique in Artforum argued that the exhibition stripped tribal objects of their ritual and cultural meanings, presenting them as if their value lay only in their formal resemblance to Western modernism. The criticism exposed the asymmetry at the heart of Primitivism: Western artists were credited with innovation for borrowing forms that non-Western artists had developed within specific cultural contexts, and those contexts were ignored.
The Leiden University seminar notes that Rubin's exhibition "evidenced to a large audience the striking similarities between more than two hundred non-Western 'tribal' and Western modern art objects" but that "critics questioned the decision to juxtapose artworks by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso" with anonymous tribal objects, "raising questions of non-Western contributions and their modality of recognition in the fruition of modern art."
Key Artists and Works
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)
Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897) is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Spirit of the Dead Watching (1892) is in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. Gauguin's Tahitian paintings are the foundational works of Primitivism, combining Western technique with non-Western subject matter and ideological commitment to the "primitive" as a corrective to Western civilization.
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The painting's two right-hand figures have faces derived from African masks, and the overall composition reflects the influence of Iberian sculpture and African carving. Picasso's personal collection of African art, held at the Musee Picasso in Paris, includes objects from present-day Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, and Gabon.
Henri Matisse (1869-1954)
Matisse bought his first African sculpture in 1906, a Vili figure from present-day Republic of Congo, which he showed to Picasso. Matisse's Blue Nude (Memory of Biskra) (1907) shows the influence of African sculpture in its simplified, volumetric body. Matisse collected African and Islamic art throughout his life, and the influence is visible in his decorative patterns and flattened space.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938)
Kirchner's woodcuts and paintings from the Die Brucke period (1905-1913) show the influence of African and Oceanic sculpture in their angular forms, mask-like faces, and bold color. Street, Dresden (1908) is in the Museum of Modern Art.
Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957)
Brancusi's simplified, abstract sculptures were influenced by Romanian folk art, African sculpture, and Cycladic figures. The Endless Column (1938) in Targu Jiu, Romania, shows the influence of non-Western geometric abstraction. The 1984 MoMA exhibition presented Brancusi within his French context without mentioning his "folk primitive" Eastern sources, a gap that a 2024 article in the Journal of the Institute of Art History identifies as part of the broader erasure of Eastern European contributions to Primitivism. The Problem with Primitivism
The central problem with Primitivism is that it is a one-way street. Western artists borrowed from non-Western art and were celebrated for innovation. The non-Western artists who produced the borrowed forms remained anonymous, their cultural contexts ignored, their artistic traditions treated as raw material rather than as sophisticated systems with their own histories, theories, and purposes. The word "primitive" itself encodes this asymmetry. It implies that non-Western art is earlier, simpler, or less developed than Western art, when in fact African, Oceanic, and Indigenous American art traditions have their own complex histories, technical sophistication, and conceptual depth.
The 2025 exhibition "The Enspirited: Tribal Art and Art Brut in Conversation" at the Christian Berst gallery in Paris addressed this problem by placing tribal art and art brut (outsider art) side by side, noting that "both of these arts entail a decentering of the Western gaze and invite us to take into account a sovereign otherness, whether cultural or intimate." The exhibition's curator argued that both traditions "compel us to broaden the horizon of art history and, consequently, to reconsider the very definition of art." Primitivism is closely related to Orientalism, another Western borrowing from non-Western cultures, though Primitivism focused on African, Oceanic, and Indigenous art while Orientalism addressed the Middle East and North Africa. It connects to Cubism, which was directly shaped by Picasso's encounter with African art, and to Expressionism, particularly the German variant that embraced "primitive" directness. It relates to African art as the primary source of Primitivist borrowing, and to outsider art (art brut), which shares the decentering of the Western academic tradition. See Primitivism in Context
To understand Primitivism, you need to see both sides: the non-Western objects that influenced Western artists and the Western works they influenced. The Musee du Quai Branly in Paris holds the largest collection of African, Oceanic, and Indigenous American art in Europe, including many objects that Picasso and other modernists would have seen at the Trocadero. The Musee Picasso in Paris holds Picasso's personal collection of African art alongside his paintings. The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and the archive of the 1984 exhibition.
For the ongoing reassessment, the Leiden University seminar (2025-2026) includes a workshop at the Wereldmuseum on "exhibiting indigeneity and contemporary art," addressing the curatorial challenges of displaying non-Western art without repeating the errors of Primitivism. The 2025 exhibition "The Enspirited" at the Christian Berst gallery in Paris ran through October 26, 2025, and the "Telluric and Primitive" exhibition at the Museo Carmen Thyssen Malaga runs through March 1, 2026.
If you want to understand Primitivism, start at the Musee du Quai Branly to see the non-Western objects on their own terms, then go to the Musee Picasso to see how Picasso collected and used them, and finally go to MoMA to see Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. You will see the full arc of the problem: objects that were made for specific cultural purposes, collected by an artist who recognized their power, and transformed into a painting that changed the course of Western art.
