Glazing: Transparent Oil Layers for Luminosity and Depth

Jan van Eyck did not invent oil painting, despite what Giorgio Vasari claimed in 1568. But he did something with oil paint that no one had done before: he used thin, transparent layers of color to make painted objects look like they were lit from within. The pearls in the Arnolfini Portrait (1434) do not just look shiny. They look like they contain light. This is what glazing does, and it is the reason oil painting replaced tempera as the dominant medium in European art for the next 500 years.

Glazing is the application of a thin, transparent layer of oil paint over a dry, opaque underlayer. The glaze modifies the color and value of what is beneath it without covering it. Light passes through the transparent glaze, reflects off the opaque layer below, and passes back through the glaze again. This double passage of light through a colored film creates a depth and luminosity that cannot be achieved by mixing the same colors on a palette and applying them flat. The painting, as Marjolijn Bol put it in her 2023 book The Varnish and the Glaze, "illuminates itself from the inside out."

What Is Glazing and How Does It Work?

A glaze is a thin film of pigment suspended in oil medium, applied over a dry paint layer. The pigment particles in a glaze are spaced far enough apart that light can pass between them. When light enters the glaze, it is partially absorbed by the pigment, partially transmitted through to the layer below, and partially reflected back. The reflected light passes through the glaze a second time, picking up more color. The result is a color that has depth and transparency, like looking through colored glass, rather than the flat, opaque color you get from mixing paint on a palette.

The optical effect depends on the refractive index of the pigment relative to the binder. Linseed oil has a refractive index of approximately 1.48. When a pigment's refractive index closely matches that of the oil, light passes through easily and the glaze appears transparent. Pigments like phthalocyanine blue, dioxazine violet, and perylene red have refractive indices close to oil and are naturally transparent. Pigments like titanium white, with a refractive index around 2.7, scatter light and are opaque. This is why traditional glazing pigments are transparent earth colors, lakes, and certain synthetic organics rather than opaque mineral pigments.

According to research published by Natural Pigments, the Pigment Volume Concentration (PVC) also determines transparency. A lower PVC means more binder relative to pigment, producing a more transparent, glossy film. A higher PVC increases opacity but can weaken the paint film. Historical painters controlled PVC by adding more or less medium to their paint, and by choosing pigments with naturally transparent particle sizes and shapes. Origins and History

Glazing predates oil painting. Medieval painters used glazes of oil and resin over metal leaf and foil to imitate the translucency of gemstones, stained glass, and enamel. Marjolijn Bol's 2023 book The Varnish and the Glaze: Painting Splendor with Oil, 1100-1500, published by the University of Chicago Press, traces the history of varnishing and glazing from the 12th century onward. Bol argues that glazing began as a technique of material mimesis, making paint look like precious substances, and only later became a tool for representing the visible world. Van Eyck and his contemporaries in early 15th-century Bruges were the first to use glazing as the primary method for achieving visual realism. By building up multiple transparent layers over an opaque underpainting, they could render the translucency of skin, the depth of fabric, and the reflective properties of metal and glass with a precision that tempera could not match. The technique spread from Flanders to Italy, where Leonardo adopted it as the basis for sfumato.

A 2023 study published in the Journal of Cultural Heritage investigated the use of crushed glass particles in oil paint glazes from the 15th and 16th centuries. The research found that powdered glass was frequently mixed with red lake pigments in surface glaze layers to increase transparency and accelerate drying. The glass particles act as a transparent filler, increasing the translucency of the paint film without significantly altering its rheological properties. Key Artists Who Used Glazing

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441)

Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait (1434, National Gallery, London) is the foundational achievement of glazing in Northern Renaissance painting. The green of the woman's dress, the red of the bed, the brass of the chandelier, and the pearls on the necklace are all built up from multiple transparent glazes over opaque underlayers. Each surface has a different optical quality because each uses a different sequence of glazes. Van Eyck was not the first to glaze, but he was the first to make glazing the structural basis of an entire painting.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Leonardo adopted glazing from the Netherlandish tradition and used it as the technical foundation for sfumato. X-ray fluorescence analysis of seven Leonardo paintings in the Louvre revealed that his shadows are built from glazes of umber and dark pigments over a base of lead white mixed with tiny amounts of vermilion. Titian (c. 1488-1576)

Titian used glazing to create the rich, warm color that became the signature of Venetian painting. In Bacchus and Ariadne (1520-1523, National Gallery, London), the blue sky is built from multiple glazes of ultramarine over a white underlayer. The depth of the blue comes not from the pigment alone but from the optical effect of light passing through the transparent layers and reflecting back. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)

Rembrandt used glazing in combination with impasto to create surfaces that alternate between thick, opaque paint and thin, transparent layers. The 2025 Operation Night Watch study found red lake glazes in the costume of Lieutenant Van Ruytenburch in The Night Watch (1642), some mixed with crushed glass to increase transparency. Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)

Vermeer used glazing to create the luminous, quiet surfaces that define his interiors. The blue of the turban in Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665, Mauritshuis) is built from ultramarine glazes over a lighter underlayer. A 2020 microchemical analysis of Vermeer's lead white paints, published in Scientific Reports, found that he used a cerussite-rich subtype of lead white specifically for its blue-hued scattering properties, which he combined with glazes to achieve subtle optical effects. How to Spot Glazing in a Painting

Glazed surfaces have a depth that flatly painted surfaces lack. The color looks like it is coming from inside the paint film rather than sitting on top of it. If you look at a glazed area from an angle, you can sometimes see the separate layers as distinct films, especially in paintings that have aged and where the layers have begun to separate slightly.

The best place to see glazing is in the National Gallery in London. Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait shows glazing at its most precise. Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne shows it at its most colorful. Rembrandt's late works in the same collection show glazing combined with impasto. Comparing these three approaches in a single visit teaches you more about glazing than any textbook.

Glazing is the foundation of sfumato, which is essentially glazing pushed to an extreme of subtlety. Its opposite is scumbling, which uses thin, broken layers of opaque paint rather than transparent paint.
