In July 1914, a magazine appeared on London bookstalls with a bright magenta cover and a single word printed in bold black letters: BLAST. Inside its pages, a manifesto signed by Wyndham Lewis and his associates "blasted" a long list of British institutions, from the English weather to the Victorians to the art establishment, and "blessed" a shorter list of things they admired, including hairdressers and the sea. A month later, Britain was at war. The magazine was the opening salvo of Vorticism, the first and only true avant-garde movement in British art, and it was over almost before it began.
Vorticism was a British modernist art movement founded in 1914 by the painter and writer Wyndham Lewis. The American poet Ezra Pound coined the name, deriving it from the idea of a vortex: a center of energy, a point of maximum intensity around which forces swirl. Vorticism shared certain characteristics with Italian Futurism and French Cubism, but Lewis insisted it was neither. Futurism was too obsessed with speed and machines. Cubism was too passive, too occupied with still lifes of apples and mandolins. Vorticism was hard-edged, angular, and cold. It sought to depict the energy of modern industrial life through sharp, interlocking geometric forms.
This entry covers what Vorticism was, how it emerged in prewar London, which artists defined it, and why a movement that lasted barely five years left such a deep mark on British art.
What Is Vorticism?
Vorticism is defined by its visual language: angular, abstract forms arranged around an implied center of energy. Where Futurist paintings show things in motion (trains, dancers, racing cars), Vorticist paintings show things in tension. The forms do not move. They press against each other. They lock together like machinery. The overall impression is of arrested force, energy held in place rather than released.
The movement was organized around two institutions. The first was the Rebel Art Centre, established by Lewis at 38 Great Ormond Street in London in 1914, where classes, lectures, and exhibitions were held. The second was the magazine BLAST, which Pound called "the great magenta cover'd opusculum." BLAST published two issues: the first in June 1914, the second in July 1915. The first issue contained the Vorticist manifesto, reproductions of Vorticist art, and writing by Pound, Ford Madox Ford, and Rebecca West. The second issue, produced after most of the group's members had enlisted in the military, was thinner and more subdued.
A 2025 book by the Canadian art historian James King, Our Little Gang, reassesses Vorticism by placing its women pioneers at the center of the movement. King argues that Jessica Dismorr and Helen Saunders, the only two female Vorticists, were not peripheral figures but central contributors whose work was in some cases more rigorously abstract than that of their male peers. The book also documents the toxic dynamics within the group, including Lewis's cruelty toward Dismorr and his destruction of a painting by Saunders. Read the review at The Art Newspaper.
Historical Context and Origins
Vorticism emerged from a specific set of circumstances in London between 1910 and 1914. Roger Fry's Post-Impressionist exhibitions of 1910 and 1912 had introduced British audiences to Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso. The Italian Futurist Filippo Tommaso Marinetti gave a series of lectures in London in 1910 and 1912, promoting his movement's celebration of speed, violence, and technological progress. Lewis attended these lectures and initially showed sympathy for Futurism, but he rejected Marinetti's attempt to claim British artists as Futurist sympathizers.
The break with Futurism was explicit. In his autobiography Blasting and Bombardiering (1937), Lewis recounted meeting Marinetti in a lavatory after one of his lectures. Marinetti declared that Lewis was a Futurist. Lewis replied coldly: "Because I am not one." He told Marinetti that the Futurists insisted too much on the machine: "You're always on about these driving-belts, you are always exploding about internal combustion. We've had machines here in England for a donkey's years. They're no novelty to us." Vorticism was positioned as a Northern, cold-blooded alternative to the hot-blooded Latin enthusiasm of Futurism. Where Futurism felt the machine age from within, Vorticism regarded it from the outside, critically.
Vorticism was also a reaction against Cubism. Lewis accused Picasso of being a "miniature naturalistic sculptor of the vast natures-morte of modern life," complaining that Cubism remained tied to representation. The BLAST manifesto derided Cubist still lifes as "machines without a purpose." Vorticism aimed to substitute a new reality for the old one, not merely fragment it. Key Artists and Pioneers
Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957)
Lewis was the founder, theorist, and self-appointed leader of Vorticism. Born in Canada, raised in Britain, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His painting Workshop (c. 1914-1915, Tate) places angular shapes suggestive of beams, windows, picture frames, and building facades on top of and into each other. Lewis said it was a portrait of a city in industrial England. The forms are sharp, the colors are muted, and the overall effect is of a structure under compression. Lewis was also a writer, and his novels Tarr (1918) and The Apes of God (1930) are as much a part of his Vorticist project as his paintings.
Helen Saunders (1885-1963)
Saunders was one of only two female Vorticists and, according to James King's 2025 study, the more rigorously experimental of the group. Her Abstract Composition in Blue and Yellow (c. 1915) uses squares, triangles, and hexagons that look animated, as if a bizarre figure were struggling up a steep hill. Saunders dispensed with descriptive titles, letting the abstraction speak for itself. Lewis painted over her work Atlantic City (c. 1915), an act of destruction that King's book documents. A lost painting by Saunders was identified beneath a Lewis canvas in 2022, confirming that Lewis had literally painted over her work.
Jessica Dismorr (1885-1939)
Dismorr was the other female Vorticist. She exhibited in both Vorticist exhibitions and contributed to BLAST. Her drawings in the magazine use the same sharp, angular forms as Lewis's work but with a lighter touch. Dismorr suffered from mental illness later in life and died by suicide in 1939. King's book argues that Lewis's cruelty toward her, including a letter in which he told her she was "a dull person," contributed to her marginalization within the movement and within art history.
William Roberts (1895-1980)
Roberts was the youngest Vorticist and the one who left the most vivid record of the movement. His painting The Vorticists at the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel: Spring, 1915 (1961-1962, Tate) is a retrospective group portrait painted decades after the fact. It shows Lewis as a monumentally proportioned figure presiding over his disciples like a Christ at the Last Supper, with Ezra Pound sporting a pre-Dali moustache. The painting is both affectionate and satirical, and it is the closest thing we have to a group portrait of the movement.
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915)
Gaudier-Brzeska was a French sculptor who became a Vorticist associate. His carvings, including Red Stone Dancer (1913, Tate) and Carved Head of Ezra Pound (1914), translate Vorticist angularity into three dimensions. He was killed in action in Belgium in June 1915 at age 23. His death, along with the enlistment of nearly every other Vorticist, effectively ended the movement.
Edward Wadsworth (1889-1949)
Wadsworth was a painter and printmaker whose woodcuts are among the most accessible Vorticist works. His View of a Town (1914) and other woodcuts use bold black-and-white geometric forms that translate the Vorticist aesthetic into a print medium. During World War I, Wadsworth served as a camouflage officer, painting dazzle patterns on warships, a job that applied his Vorticist training to military purposes.
Exhibitions and Timeline
Vorticism had only two exhibitions during its lifetime. The first was at the Dore Gallery in London in June 1915, where around fifty works were shown by Lewis, Wadsworth, Roberts, Etchells, Saunders, Dismorr, and others. The second was at the Penguin Club in New York in January 1917, organized by the collector John Quinn with Ezra Pound's assistance. This exhibition introduced Vorticism to an American audience and highlighted the transatlantic exchange of ideas that shaped the movement. The Tate Britain 2011 exhibition "The Vorticists: Manifesto for a Modern World," co-organized with the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, brought together over 100 works and used new research to examine both exhibitions. Read the press release at Tate.
The Estorick Collection in London mounted "Blasting the Future! Vorticism in Britain, 1910-1920," which traveled to the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. The exhibition examined Vorticism's turbulent relationship with Futurism and included all the major Vorticists alongside sympathetic figures like Jacob Epstein and David Bomberg. Legacy and Influence
Vorticism's direct influence was limited by its brevity. The movement effectively ended in 1916 when Lewis enlisted in the army. By the time he returned in 1918, the artistic landscape had shifted. Dada had emerged in Zurich, and the postwar mood was different from the prewar excitement that had produced BLAST. Lewis continued to paint and write, but he never revived the movement.
However, Vorticism's importance in British art history is outsized relative to its duration. It was the first attempt on British soil to launch an avant-garde art movement, and it demonstrated that British artists could engage with European modernism on their own terms rather than imitating it. The Vorticist emphasis on angular, geometric abstraction fed into British modernism between the wars, particularly in the work of David Bomberg and the Unit One group. The movement's use of text and image together in BLAST anticipated the interdisciplinary practices of later movements like Fluxus and Conceptual Art.
See Vorticism in Person
The Tate holds the largest collection of Vorticist works in the world, including Lewis's Workshop, Roberts's The Vorticists at the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel, and works by Wadsworth, Saunders, and Dismorr. The Estorick Collection in London specializes in early twentieth-century Italian and British modernist art and has exhibited Vorticist works alongside Futurist pieces. The Courtauld Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum also hold Vorticist prints and drawings.
If you want to understand Vorticism, start with BLAST. The magazine itself is the most complete statement of the movement's ideas, and facsimile editions are available in major library collections. Then go to Tate Britain and look at Lewis's Workshop. The painting is small, but the compression of forms inside it gives a physical sense of what Lewis meant by a vortex: not movement, but pressure.
