In 1962, a Lithuanian-born graphic designer named George Maciunas organized a series of concerts in Wiesbaden, Germany. He called them the "Fluxus Internationale Festspiele Neuester Musik." The concerts featured a chemist named George Brecht performing a piece called Drip Music, which consisted of water dripping into a vessel. A musician named Nam June Paik performed One for Violin Solo, in which he slowly raised a violin over his head and smashed it to pieces on a table. A poet named Dick Higgins read from a telephone book. The audience did not know what to make of it. That was the point. Maciunas had named the movement Fluxus, from the Latin word for "flow," and the idea was that art should flow into life and life should flow into art until you could not tell them apart.
Fluxus was an international art movement that emerged around 1960 and remained active through the 1970s, with influence extending to the present. It was founded by George Maciunas, a graphic designer who was color-blind and had no formal training as an artist. Fluxus was not a style. It was an attitude: anti-commercial, anti-institutional, playful, and committed to erasing the boundaries between art and everyday life. Fluxus artists worked in what Dick Higgins called "intermedia": the spaces between established categories like music, poetry, painting, sculpture, and theater. They produced event scores, mail art, Fluxkits (boxes of everyday objects presented as art), performances, and publications. The movement was deliberately difficult to define, because defining it would have been exactly the kind of institutional gesture Fluxus opposed.

Fluxus is a collective, cosmopolitan, and participatory art movement that rejected the autonomous art object in favor of events, scores, and everyday actions. The movement was rooted in experimental music, particularly the work of John Cage, whose 1952 composition 4'33" consists of a performer sitting at a piano for four minutes and thirty-three seconds without playing a note. Cage's point was that the sounds of the environment are music, and that the boundary between music and noise is arbitrary. Fluxus extended this principle to all art: the boundary between art and life is arbitrary, and anything can be art if it is framed as such.
The Fluxus approach was characterized by several features. First, simplicity: Fluxus works used ordinary materials and required no special skill to produce. Second, brevity: many Fluxus event scores are a single sentence long. George Brecht's Three Chair Events (1961) reads: "Sitting. Occurrence. Chair." Third, humor: Fluxus was funny, absurd, and irreverent, treating the solemnity of the art world as a target for ridicule. Fourth, anti-commercialism: Maciunas organized Fluxus concerts in apartments and public spaces, not galleries, and he produced Fluxkits that were sold cheaply, undermining the market value of art. Fifth, intermedia: Fluxus artists worked between disciplines, blending music, literature, visual art, and performance in ways that made categorization impossible.
The Archiv der Avantgarden in Dresden describes Fluxus as "one of the most uncompromising artistic movements of the 20th century," which "broke with conventional art forms and allowed everyday life, forms of communication and playfulness to merge." The exhibition "Fluxurious! Art and Anti-Art from the 1960s to the 1990s" runs from November 8, 2025, through March 8, 2026, featuring works by George Brecht, Joseph Beuys, Charlotte Moorman, Dick Higgins, Ben Vautier, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Takako Saito, and Wolf Vostell. Fluxus emerged from a network of artists and composers who had been influenced by John Cage's classes at the New School for Social Research in New York, which he taught from 1956 to 1960. Cage's students included George Brecht, Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Allan Kaprow, and La Monte Young. Cage taught that music could be made from any sound, that chance could determine the structure of a composition, and that the distinction between art and life was a convention, not a law. These ideas became the foundation of Fluxus.
Maciunas began organizing Fluxus events in 1961, and the first official Fluxus festival took place in Wiesbaden in September 1962. The festival featured performances by Nam June Paik, George Brecht, Dick Higgins, Emmett Williams, and others. Maciunas published the first Fluxus manifesto in 1963, a hand-drawn document that called for "art to be made available to all" and for the abolition of the "art object" in favor of "art as an event." The manifesto was as much a provocation as a program, and Maciunas himself never adhered to it consistently.
The Centre Pompidou's exhibition "Fluxus by Chance," presented at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai from September 25, 2025, through February 22, 2026, emphasizes the accidental origins of the movement. The exhibition notes that Fluxus emerged "from the coming together of individuals who were not artists but became so through emulation." George Brecht was a chemist. Robert Filliou was an economist. La Monte Young was a musician. Emmett Williams was an anthropologist. Maciunas was a graphic designer. Their individual experiences offered a wealth of experimental potential, and Fluxus was a collective, cosmopolitan, and participatory adventure that sought to break down the boundaries and hierarchy between audience and artist. Maciunas was the founder, organizer, and self-appointed chairman of Fluxus. He designed Fluxus publications, organized festivals, assembled Fluxkits, and maintained a network of correspondents that kept the movement connected across continents. He was also a real estate pioneer who bought and renovated buildings in SoHo in the 1970s, creating artist cooperatives that transformed the neighborhood. Maciunas was color-blind, which meant that his visual art was primarily black and white. His Fluxus Manifesto (1963) is a hand-drawn collage of dictionary definitions and personal declarations. He died of pancreatic cancer in 1978 at age 47.
Ono was a central Fluxus figure, though she was never officially a member of any group. Her Grapefruit (1964), a book of event scores, is one of the most important Fluxus publications. The scores are brief instructions: "Light a match and let it go out." "Imagine the clouds dripping." "Draw a map to get lost." The book was reprinted in 2000 and has influenced generations of artists. Ono's Cut Piece (1964), performed at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York, involved the artist sitting motionless on stage while audience members cut pieces of her clothing off with scissors. The work transferred control from the artist to the audience, a gesture that embodied Fluxus's participatory ethos.
Paik was a Korean-born artist who brought Fluxus into the electronic age. Trained as a composer in Tokyo and Munich, he began modifying television sets in 1963, distorting their images with magnets to create abstract patterns. His TV Buddha (1974) shows a Buddha statue facing a television camera that displays the statue's live image on a monitor, creating an infinite loop of self-observation. Paik's work bridged Fluxus and video art, and he is often called the father of video art. His Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S. (1995, Smithsonian American Art Museum) uses 336 television monitors to outline the United States, each state playing video footage relevant to its identity.
Brecht was a chemist who became one of the most influential Fluxus artists. His event cards, small white cards with brief typed instructions, are among the most concise artworks ever made. Exit reads: "Determine the number of possible ways to exit the room. Leave in all possible ways." Three Aqueous Events reads: "Water. Clear water. Water." Brecht's work demonstrates the Fluxus principle that the idea is the artwork and the performance is optional: the event card can be read, performed, or simply known to exist.
Beuys was a German artist associated with Fluxus who expanded the movement's ideas into what he called "social sculpture," the idea that society itself is a work of art and that every person is an artist. His I Like America and America Likes Me (1974) involved Beuys living in a gallery with a coyote for three days. His How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare (1965) involved Beuys walking through a gallery with his face covered in honey and gold leaf, whispering explanations of his paintings to a dead hare he carried in his arms. Beuys's work was more theatrical and mythological than most Fluxus, but his commitment to dissolving the boundary between art and life was pure Fluxus.
Higgins was a poet, composer, and publisher who coined the term "intermedia" in 1965 to describe works that fall between established genres. His Something Else Press, founded in 1963, published works by Fluxus artists and others in editions that were affordable and widely distributed. Higgins's Pattern Poetry research and his own compositions, including The Thousand Symphonies (1968), in which an orchestra plays from scores that have been shot through with bullet holes, exemplify Fluxus's blend of humor, violence, and formal experimentation.
The event score is the characteristic Fluxus form. An event score is a brief written instruction for an action, usually simple, often absurd, and always performable by anyone. The score is the artwork. The performance is a realization of the artwork, but it is not the artwork itself. This makes Fluxus event scores the direct ancestors of Conceptual Art, which similarly privileged the idea over the object. The difference is that Fluxus scores are usually playful and physical, while Conceptual Art is more often cerebral and linguistic.
Fluxkits are the other characteristic Fluxus form. A Fluxkit is a small box or case containing everyday objects, printed materials, and small artworks, assembled by Maciunas and sold by mail order. The kits were designed to be handled, opened, and used, not displayed behind glass. They contained things like matches, balls, printed cards, plastic containers, and small games. The Fluxkit is the Fluxus equivalent of a painting: a portable, self-contained artwork that you interact with rather than look at.
The Leicester Gallery at De Montfort University presents "residue...what remains" from February 6 through June 7, 2026, curated by choreographer Sue Schroeder. The exhibition brings together works by more than seventy international artists, including John Cage, Alison Knowles, and Anna Halprin, and includes a live performance of Philip Corner's Piano Activity, in which a group of artists use saws, hammers, and chisels to destroy a piano. The exhibition provides a rich overview of Fluxus legacies and the group's ongoing influence on contemporary visual arts, dance, theatre, film, music, and performance. Fluxus's influence on contemporary art is pervasive, though often unacknowledged. The movement's insistence that art can be an action rather than an object, that the audience can be a participant rather than a spectator, and that everyday materials and situations are valid subjects for art, all became foundational principles of contemporary practice. Performance art, Conceptual Art, installation art, and mail art all owe direct debts to Fluxus.
The movement also anticipated the dematerialization of art in the digital age. If the artwork is an instruction, a score, or an idea, then it can be transmitted by email, social media, or any communication channel. Fluxus mail art, in which artists sent small works through the postal system, was a precursor to the networked art practices of the internet era. The Fluxus Fete, a three-day celebration held February 26-28, 2026, at the Bern Academy of the Arts and Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, marked the culmination of a multi-year research project called "Activating Fluxus," supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The event brought together artists, scholars, and audiences to explore Fluxus's playful, experimental, and boundary-pushing practices through lectures, panels, and performances that activated scores and reinterpreted Fluxus works. Fluxus works are scattered across major collections. The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds Fluxkits and works by Maciunas, Brecht, and Ono. The Tate holds works by Paik and Beuys. The Smithsonian holds Paik's Electronic Superhighway. The Archiv der Avantgarden in Dresden holds an extensive collection of Fluxus multiples, Fluxkits, and archive material. The Jean Brown papers at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles include a major collection of Fluxus correspondence and ephemera.
If you want to experience Fluxus, do not just look at the objects. Read the scores. Perform them, if only in your imagination. The works are designed to be activated, not just displayed. Stand in front of a Fluxkit and imagine opening it, handling the objects inside, playing the games. That act of imagination is what Maciunas intended.
