When the electric spotlights in the Contarelli Chapel are turned off, you cannot see the paintings. This is not a failure of lighting design. It is the point. Caravaggio painted The Calling of Saint Matthew and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew for a chapel that was, in 1600, lit by narrow windows and candlelight. The darkness was the medium. The shaft of light in The Calling is not just a compositional device. It is a simulation of the actual light that would have entered the chapel and hit the canvas at a specific angle. Caravaggio painted for a space where darkness was the default condition and illumination was the exception.
Tenebrism is the use of extreme darkness as the dominant tone of a painting, with figures and objects emerging from shadow through shafts or pools of light. The word comes from the Italian "tenebroso," meaning dark or gloomy. Tenebrism is not the same as chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro uses light-dark contrast to model form. Tenebrism uses darkness as the primary field of the painting, with light appearing as a dramatic intrusion. In chiaroscuro, shadow describes form. In tenebrism, shadow is the environment.

The distinction between chiaroscuro and tenebrism is a matter of degree and function. Chiaroscuro is the general use of tonal contrast to model three-dimensional form. Every Renaissance painter who used light and shadow to describe volume was practicing chiaroscuro. Tenebrism is a specific intensification of chiaroscuro where the dark areas dominate the composition and the light areas are concentrated in shafts, spots, or pools rather than distributed across the surface.
In a chiaroscuro painting by Leonardo, the shadow areas are still legible. You can see what is in the darkness. In a tenebrist painting by Caravaggio, the dark areas are pure black or near-black. They contain no information. The figures exist only where the light hits them, and the surrounding space is an undifferentiated void. This is why tenebrism is sometimes called "dramatic chiaroscuro" or "extreme chiaroscuro." It is chiaroscuro pushed to a point where darkness stops describing form and starts functioning as absence.
A 2024 geometric analysis of Caravaggio's light and shadow technique, published in Applied Mathematics and Nonlinear Sciences, used curvelet transformation to analyze six paintings from different periods of his career. The study found that Caravaggio's early work is characterized by a high low-scale coefficient and a low high-scale coefficient, meaning more thick lines and fewer details. His later work shifts to a low scale coefficient and a high scale coefficient, meaning more fine lines and fewer thick lines. Tenebrism emerged in Rome in the late 1590s and is primarily associated with Caravaggio, though the roots of the approach go deeper. A 2024 study published in the journal Arts traced the origins of "affective darkness," the use of shadow to move viewers emotionally, back to Leonardo da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks (1483-1486) in Milan. The research argues that under the influence of Franciscan theology, Leonardo began using darkness not just to articulate form but to focalize the viewer's experience toward a sense of divine presence. Caravaggio arrived in Rome from Lombardy in the early 1590s. By 1599, he had received the commission for the Contarelli Chapel, and it was there that tenebrism arrived as a fully formed approach. The paintings he produced for the chapel, The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599-1600) and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew (1600-1601), use darkness as the primary field with light entering as a diagonal shaft from an upper source. The effect was shocking. Contemporaries described the paintings as too dark, too violent, too real. But the approach spread rapidly. Within twenty years, tenebrist painting had appeared in Naples, Spain, the Netherlands, and France.
A 2025 doctoral study published on Zenodo reexamined the Contarelli Chapel paintings through the lens of historical lighting conditions. The research reconstructed the material conditions of visibility in the chapel from Caravaggio's era to the 20th century, demonstrating that the paintings were designed for a space of near-total darkness. Caravaggio adapted his canvases to their architectural setting, using compositional lighting strategies that would make the paintings legible under the dim natural light of the chapel. Caravaggio is the inventor and defining practitioner of tenebrism. The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599-1600, Contarelli Chapel, Rome) is the canonical example: a shaft of light from the upper right illuminates Matthew and the figures around him while the rest of the canvas is consumed by darkness. Judith Beheading Holofernes (c. 1598-1602, Palazzo Barberini, Rome) uses tenebrism to heighten the violence of the scene. The blood, the expressions, the physical struggle are all concentrated in the pool of light, while the surrounding space is void. A 2024 study surveyed viewers' emotional responses to Caravaggio's tenebrist paintings, finding that Judith Beheading Holofernes evoked fear in 29.8% of respondents and that 61.7% associated the painting with the color red. Ribera, a Spanish painter working in Naples, was directly influenced by Caravaggio. His The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew (1634, National Gallery of Art, Washington) uses tenebrism to concentrate the viewer's attention on the saint's tortured body. Ribera's tenebrism is more brutal than Caravaggio's, with less theological justification and more raw physical suffering.
La Tour adapted tenebrism to candlelit scenes. Magdalene with the Smoking Flame (c. 1640, LACMA) and The Repentant Magdalene (c. 1640, National Gallery of Art, Washington) use a single candle as the light source, with everything outside its glow swallowed by darkness. La Tour's tenebrism is quieter and more meditative than Caravaggio's, but the structural principle is the same.
Gentileschi, who worked in Rome, Florence, and Naples, absorbed Caravaggio's tenebrism and made it her own. Judith Slaying Holofernes (c. 1612-1613, Museo di Capodimonte, Naples) uses the same tenebrist structure as Caravaggio's version but with an added physicality and fury that comes from Gentileschi's own experience. The darkness in her painting is not just absence. It is a space that contains rage.
Rembrandt's use of tenebrism is more subtle than Caravaggio's. In The Return of the Prodigal Son (c. 1668, Hermitage Museum), the figures emerge from a dark background, but the darkness is warm and luminous rather than absolute. Rembrandt never fully adopted Caravaggio's void-like blackness, but his late works use tenebrist principles to focus attention and create emotional depth.
Look at the proportion of dark to light. If more than two-thirds of the painting's surface is dark, and if the light areas are concentrated in shafts or pools rather than distributed evenly, you are looking at tenebrism. In ordinary chiaroscuro, the shadow areas still contain visible detail. In tenebrism, the dark areas are flat and empty. They are not describing anything. They are the ground against which the illuminated figures exist.
The easiest comparison is between Caravaggio and Rembrandt, both of whom can be seen at the National Gallery in London. Caravaggio's The Supper at Emmaus (1601) has a dark background that is essentially blank. Rembrandt's Belshazzar's Feast (c. 1635) has a dark background that still contains visible objects and spatial information. Both use chiaroscuro. Only Caravaggio uses tenebrism.
Tenebrism is the extreme form of chiaroscuro. It contrasts with sfumato, which uses soft, gradual transitions rather than abrupt contrast. Tenebrist paintings often use impasto in the illuminated areas to make the light catch the raised paint surface, increasing the contrast between lit and dark passages. Tenebrism is most powerful in the spaces it was painted for. The Contarelli Chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome is the best place to start. Caravaggio's three Matthew paintings hang in the chapel they were designed for, and the lighting conditions, even with modern spotlights, still convey the relationship between darkness and illumination that Caravaggio intended. If you can, visit when the spotlights are off and the chapel is lit only by natural light. You will understand immediately why Caravaggio painted the way he did.
For tenebrism in a museum setting, the Palazzo Barberini in Rome has Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes, and the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples has Gentileschi's version of the same subject.
