Terracotta: Fired Clay Sculpture from Ancient Greece to Canova

Niccolo dell'Arca's Lamentation over the Dead Christ, installed in the church of Santa Maria della Vita in Bologna around 1463, is one of the most violent pieces of sculpture ever made. Seven life-size figures, modeled in clay and fired, writhe and scream around the body of Christ. The Magdalen throws her head back in an open-mouthed scream, her hair flying in frozen arcs of terracotta. The figures are so physically intense that viewers sometimes step back when they encounter them for the first time. And they are made from mud. Not marble, not bronze, not ivory. Mud, shaped by hand and hardened by fire. Terracotta, which means "cooked earth" in Italian, is the most humble and the most expressive of sculptural materials, and dell'Arca's Lamentation proves that it can convey emotion as powerfully as any stone or metal.

Terracotta is fired, unglazed clay, typically earthenware, used for sculpture, architectural decoration, vessels, and tiles. The term comes from the Italian "terra cotta," meaning "cooked earth." Terracotta has been used for sculpture since prehistoric times and has been the most widely available sculptural medium across cultures and periods. In Western art, terracotta reached peaks of artistic achievement in ancient Greece, Etruscan Italy, Renaissance Florence, and eighteenth-century France. It was used both for finished sculpture and for preparatory models (bozzetti) that preceded works in marble or bronze.

What Is Terracotta and How Is It Made?

Terracotta is made from earthenware clay, which is fired at relatively low temperatures, between 900 and 1,100 degrees Celsius. The clay is shaped by hand, using coil-building, slab-building, or modeling techniques, or by pressing it into molds. After drying to the leather-hard stage, the surface can be refined, carved, or decorated with slip (liquid clay) or pigments. The piece is then fired in a kiln, which permanently transforms the clay through chemical changes that make it hard and durable.

The color of terracotta depends on the iron content of the clay. Most terracotta has a warm reddish-brown color, caused by iron oxide in the clay that oxidizes during firing. Terracotta from different regions has distinct colors: Italian terracotta tends toward a warm orange-red, while some English terracotta is paler and more buff-colored. The surface of unglazed terracotta is matte and slightly porous, with a texture that ranges from smooth to roughly textured depending on how the clay was finished.

Because terracotta is porous, it absorbs water if left unglazed. For sculptural purposes, this is usually not a problem, since the sculpture is displayed indoors or in a protected location. For architectural use, terracotta is often glazed to make it waterproof. Glazed terracotta, developed by the della Robbia family in fifteenth-century Florence, combines the sculptural qualities of terracotta with the durability and color of a ceramic glaze.

History of Terracotta Sculpture

Ancient World

Terracotta is the oldest sculptural medium after stone. The earliest known figurative sculptures, including the Venus of Dolni Vestonice (c. 27,000 BCE), were made from fired clay. In the ancient Mediterranean, terracotta was used for figurines, architectural decoration, and votive offerings. Pliny the Elder records that in the seventh century BCE, an exiled Corinthian merchant named Demaratus introduced the fashioning of figures from baked earth to Italy, an art that was "brought to perfection by Italy and especially by Etruria."

The first recorded artist names on the Italian peninsula belong to sculptors who worked in clay: Vulca of Veii and Gorgasus and Damophilus of Magna Graecia, who produced decorations for temples in Rome around the turn of the sixth to fifth centuries BCE. The Getty's catalogue of ancient terracottas from South Italy and Sicily notes that terracottas were "mass produced and finished by hand" and were "ubiquitous in the ancient Mediterranean," found in dwellings, graves, and sanctuaries. Greek terracotta figurines, produced from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period, were made using molds that allowed for mass production. The Tanagra figurines of the fourth century BCE, small draped women in graceful poses, were produced in workshops and exported throughout the Mediterranean. Roman terracotta production peaked during the Republican period and declined during the Empire, though figurines continued to be produced for votive and domestic use.

Renaissance Italy

In Renaissance Italy, terracotta was used for both preparatory models and finished sculpture. Donatello used terracotta for bozzetti and for finished works. Luca della Robbia developed the tin-glazed terracotta technique that made his family's workshop famous. Niccolo dell'Arca's Lamentation (c. 1463-1465) in Bologna demonstrated the expressive potential of terracotta for life-size figural sculpture. The medium was relatively cheap and readily available, which allowed sculptors to use it in preference to more costly materials like bronze, marble, or wood.

The Earth and Fire exhibition, held in London and Houston, brought together Italian terracotta sculpture from Donatello to Canova. The exhibition catalogue notes that terracotta "virtually knew no bounds in terms of expressive possibilities" but "fell into disfavour at the beginning of the nineteenth century with the prejudice against polychromy." Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries

In the eighteenth century, terracotta bozzetti began to be collected as independent works of art. Sculptors like Antonio Canova and Jean-Antoine Houdon produced terracotta models that were prized for their freshness and spontaneity. Canova's terracotta Cupid and Psyche (1787, Museo Correr, Venice) shows the rapid, gestural handling that distinguishes a bozzetto from a finished marble. The transition from preparatory model to collectible object reflects a broader shift in how sculpture was valued: the artist's process became as interesting as the finished product.

Niccolo dell'Arca (c. 1435-1494)

Niccolo dell'Arca's Lamentation over the Dead Christ (c. 1463-1465, Santa Maria della Vita, Bologna) is a group of seven life-size terracotta figures that is one of the most emotionally intense sculptures of the Italian Renaissance. The figures, modeled in clay and fired, show a raw physicality that marble could not achieve. The Magdalen's screaming face and flying hair are sculpted with a directness that comes from the speed and responsiveness of clay as a material.

Luca della Robbia (1399-1482)

Luca della Robbia invented the tin-glazed terracotta technique that became his family's signature. His Resurrection lunette (c. 1445) above the sacristy door of Florence Cathedral shows the brilliant, durable colors that the glazing technique produced. The della Robbia workshop produced hundreds of glazed terracotta reliefs for churches and public buildings across Tuscany, making terracotta one of the most visible sculptural media of the Renaissance.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)

Bernini used terracotta bozzetti to develop his marble and bronze sculptures. These small, rapidly modeled clay sketches capture the energy and movement of his compositions in a way that the finished marble cannot. The Harvard Art Museums and the Museo di Roma hold collections of Bernini bozzetti that show his working process, from initial idea to finished composition.

Antonio Canova (1757-1822)

Canova's terracotta models, like Cupid and Psyche (1787, Museo Correr, Venice), show the sculptor's process at its most spontaneous. The clay is handled with a speed and freedom that the finished marble does not possess. Canova's bozzetti were collected in his lifetime, marking the transition of terracotta from a working material to a collectible art form.
