
Color Theory for Art Appreciation: Warm, Cool, and Complementary Colors

Local color is the actual color of an object in neutral light, unaffected by shadows or reflections. Learn how painters from Cezanne to Hopper used it.
An apple is red. That statement seems simple enough. But stand in a room with a green lamp and the apple will look brown. Take it outside at noon and it will look bright, saturated red. Take it into a dark closet and it will look almost black. The apple has not changed. The light has changed. The red you think of as "the color of the apple" is its local color: the color it appears to have when viewed in neutral, white light, without the influence of colored illumination, shadows, or reflections from nearby objects. Painters spend years learning to separate local color from perceived color, because the difference between the two is the difference between painting what you know and painting what you see.
Local color is the actual, inherent color of an object as it would appear under neutral white light. It is the color you would name the object if someone asked you what color it is. Grass is green. A brick is red-brown. The sky is blue. These are local colors. They are stable properties of the objects, determined by the pigments or materials that make them up. But local color is rarely what a painter puts on canvas, because real-world lighting conditions almost never present objects in their local color. Instead, the painter must observe how light, shadow, and surrounding colors modify the local color, and decide how faithfully to reproduce those modifications.

Local color is the baseline color of an object. It is the color of the object's surface, determined by which wavelengths of light the surface reflects and which it absorbs. A red apple reflects long-wavelength red light and absorbs most other wavelengths. Under neutral white light, which contains all wavelengths equally, the apple appears red. This is its local color.
Perceived color is different. It is the color the eye actually sees, which is influenced by the color of the light source, the color of shadows, and the color of nearby objects reflecting light onto the surface. Under a warm tungsten lamp, the red apple looks more orange. Under a cool fluorescent light, it looks more purple. In the green shadow of a nearby plant, it looks brownish. The painter's job is to decide whether to paint the local color (what the object "is") or the perceived color (what the object "looks like" in this specific moment).
A 2025 study examined context effects on the perception of saturation in still-life paintings, using fruits in 17th-century Dutch still-life paintings as stimuli. The research found that surrounding contexts led to an increase in perceived saturation of central fruits. The effect was driven by object overlap, the presence of the same fruit type in the context, and surround variance. Chroma contrast between fruits and contexts decreased saturation significantly. The study demonstrates that perceived color is not the same as local color. The tension between local color and perceived color is one of the defining arguments in Western painting. For most of art history, painters painted local color. A robe was blue. A face was flesh-colored. A tree was green. The local color was applied uniformly, with darker versions (shades) for shadows and lighter versions (tints) for highlights. This approach produces paintings that are readable and stable but not optically accurate. The shadows in a Renaissance painting are the local color darkened with black, not the complex, warm-cool shadows that exist in reality.
The Impressionists broke this tradition. Claude Monet (1840-1926) argued that local color does not exist in painting, because every color we see is modified by light. His Haystacks series (1890-1891) proves the point. The same haystack, painted at different times of day, appears orange, pink, blue, or violet. None of these is the local color of the hay. They are all perceived colors, shaped by the specific light conditions at the moment of observation. Monet was saying: paint what you see, not what you know.
Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) took a different position. He believed in local color but used it as a construction tool rather than a descriptive one. In Mont Sainte-Victoire (1902-1906, Philadelphia Museum of Art), the mountain is built from patches of warm and cool color that correspond loosely to the local colors of the landscape: blue sky, green trees, warm earth. But Cezanne did not paint these colors as they appeared. He adjusted them, intensifying some and muting others, to create a composition where color itself builds form and space. Cezanne's local color is a starting point, not an end point.
Van Eyck is the supreme painter of local color. The Arnolfini Portrait (1434, National Gallery, London) renders every object with its local color applied in thin, translucent glazes. The green dress is green. The red bedspread is red. The wooden shoes are brown. Van Eyck's achievement was not to question local color but to render it with such precision and luminosity that the painting becomes a record of the material world. His technique of building up layers of oil glaze allowed him to paint local color that seemed to glow from within, as if the object itself were emitting light.
Monet denied local color in favor of perceived color. Impression, Sunrise (1872, Musee Marmottan Monet) does not paint the harbor in its local colors. The water is not blue. It is a series of warm and cool brushmarks that mix optically to suggest the effect of morning light on the surface. Monet's insistence on perceived color over local color was the philosophical foundation of Impressionism, and it changed how painters thought about color for the next century.
Cezanne used local color as a structural element. In The Basket of Apples (c. 1895, Art Institute of Chicago), the apples are red, green, and yellow, which are their local colors. But Cezanne did not paint them as he saw them in a specific light. He painted them as constructed objects, each apple a patch of color that builds the composition. The local color is the starting point, but the final color on canvas is a decision about form, balance, and spatial relationship.
Hopper used local color to create a sense of American realism. Nighthawks (1942, Art Institute of Chicago) shows a diner at night, with its interior lit by fluorescent light. The local colors of the figures' clothing, the counter, and the walls are clear and identifiable, but they are modified by the cool light of the diner and the warm darkness of the street outside. Hopper's genius was in showing how local color persists even under extreme lighting conditions. You can still tell that the counter is green and the walls are yellow-orange, even though the light has shifted them toward cooler versions of themselves.
Morandi reduced local color to its minimum. His bottles and jars are painted in tones so close to gray that the local color is barely detectable. A pale lavender bottle, a warm pink-gray jar, a cool cream box: these are local colors stripped of saturation, reduced to the faintest chromatic signal. Morandi proved that local color does not need to be loud to be present. Even at the edge of neutrality, the local color of each object is what distinguishes it from its neighbors.
The simplest exercise is to look at a white object in a colored room. A white ball on a green tablecloth, lit by a warm lamp, will appear pinkish on the lit side, greenish on the shadow side, and warm overall. Its local color is white. Its perceived color is everything else. A painter who paints the ball white has painted the local color. A painter who paints the ball pink, green, and warm gray has painted the perceived color.
Most contemporary painters work with perceived color, following the Impressionist insight that local color is a fiction. But some painters, particularly those working in realist and classical traditions, still begin with local color and then modify it. The decision is not about right or wrong. It is about what kind of painting you want to make. A painting built on local color feels stable, readable, and timeless. A painting built on perceived color feels specific, momentary, and optical.
A painter working outdoors, observing how colors shift over time, described the process: "Through direct observation and trying to mix the colors that I see, I start to understand what the perceived color of an object might be versus what the color actually is. Time of day makes all the difference for how the environment looks." The local color of a barn is red. But at sunset, the perceived color is orange. At dusk, it is purple. At noon, it is a flat, warm red. The painter must choose which of these colors to put on the canvas.
Local color is connected to several other color theory concepts. Color has three dimensions: hue, saturation, and brightness. Local color is the hue and saturation of an object in neutral conditions. Color temperature affects how local color is perceived: a warm light source shifts local color warmer, a cool light source shifts it cooler. Tone, or color mixed with gray, is often what happens to local color in shadow or under low light. Optical mixing allows painters to suggest perceived color by placing small marks of pure color side by side, letting the eye blend them. Place a colored object on a table. A red apple works well. Look at it under three different light sources: daylight from a window, a warm lamp, and a cool fluorescent or LED light. In each condition, mix the color you see and paint a small square. You will get three different colors. Now mix what you think the local color of the apple is: the red you would name if someone asked you what color it is. Compare all four squares. The local color square is the baseline. The other three are perceived colors, each modified by the light source. Understanding this difference is the first step toward painting color that is optically accurate rather than merely labeled correctly.
