Color: Hue, Saturation, and Brightness in Visual Art

Color is the visual perception of different wavelengths of light. From Newton's spectrum to the Munsell system, learn how color works in art.

Isaac Newton did not discover color. He discovered that color is light. In 1666, he darkened his room at Cambridge, cut a slit in the shutter, and placed a glass prism in the beam of sunlight that fell across his desk. The white light separated into a band of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Newton proved that what we call color is the visual perception of different wavelengths of light, and that white light contains all the colors of the spectrum. Every artist who has ever mixed paint on a palette is working with the physics Newton described.

Color is one of the seven elements of art, alongside line, shape, form, value, texture, and space. It is the visual sensation produced when light of different wavelengths strikes the retina. In art, color has three primary properties: hue, saturation, and brightness. Understanding these three properties is the foundation of color theory, and color theory is the foundation of painting, design, and visual communication.

What Is Color in Art?

Color has three dimensions. Hue is the name of the color: red, yellow, green, blue, and so on. Hue corresponds to the dominant wavelength of light reaching the eye. Saturation, also called intensity or chroma, is the purity of the color. A fully saturated color is vivid and intense. A desaturated color is muted, closer to gray. Brightness, also called value or lightness, is how light or dark the color is. A pale yellow has high brightness. A deep navy blue has low brightness.

These three dimensions are the basis of the Munsell Color System, developed by the American painter Albert Henry Munsell in 1905. Munsell arranged colors in a three-dimensional model: hue around the circumference, saturation radiating from the center, and brightness along the vertical axis. The Munsell system is still used in art education, industrial design, and scientific research because it provides a precise, standardized way to describe any color.

A 2025 study published in BMC Psychology used the Munsell Color System to investigate how art and non-art students emotionally perceive color across hue, saturation, and brightness dimensions. The study found that brightness and saturation significantly influence emotional responses. Warmer colors, such as orange, elicited more positive emotional evaluations. Cooler colors, such as blue, received less positive ratings. Art students showed slight sensitivity to brightness and hue variations, while non-art students responded more strongly to saturation. Colors interact in predictable ways. The color wheel, first developed by Newton and refined by many theorists since, organizes hues in a circle. Primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Secondary colors, produced by mixing two primaries, are orange, green, and purple. Complementary colors sit opposite each other on the wheel: red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple. When placed side by side, complementary colors create maximum contrast and visual vibration. Analogous colors sit next to each other on the wheel and create harmony through similarity. Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) appear to advance toward the viewer. Cool colors (blue, green, purple) appear to recede.

Color Through Art History

The history of color in art is the history of pigment technology and color theory evolving together. For most of human history, artists were limited by the pigments available to them. Cave painters at Lascaux used charcoal, ochre, and hematite: black, red, and yellow. Egyptian artists added malachite green, lapis lazuli blue, and cinnabar red. The Romans used a broader palette but still relied on mineral pigments ground and mixed with binders.

The Renaissance brought a more systematic approach to color. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) wrote about color perspective, observing that distant objects appear bluer and paler than near objects, an effect now called atmospheric perspective. Titian (c. 1488-1576) built paintings from layers of translucent color glazes, creating depth and luminosity that could not be achieved with opaque paint alone. His Bacchus and Ariadne (1520-1523) uses a saturated blue sky made from ultramarine, the most expensive pigment of the era, ground from lapis lazuli imported from Afghanistan.

The 17th century saw the apex of chiaroscuro, the dramatic use of light and dark, which is fundamentally a use of color value. Caravaggio (1571-1610) painted figures emerging from darkness, using extreme value contrast to create drama and volume. Rembrandt (1606-1669) used warm, golden light against deep brown shadows, creating a color environment that is intimate and psychological.

The 19th century transformed color in painting. The invention of the metal paint tube in 1841 allowed artists to paint outdoors, where they could observe color in natural light. The Impressionists, including Claude Monet (1840-1926), Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), abandoned the studio palette of browns and grays in favor of the full spectrum. Monet's Impression, Sunrise (1872), the painting that gave the movement its name, uses complementary blue and orange to create a vibration that captures the effect of morning light on water.

A 2025 study published in the Journal of Vision analyzed the role of color in aesthetic appreciation of paintings using three datasets comprising over 73,000 paintings. The research found that top-rated paintings contain significantly more color variation than bottom-rated paintings across all datasets. Color diversity contributes to liking, and this effect is particularly strong in figurative styles where color is a key feature, such as Impressionism (correlation 0.308) and Rococo (correlation 0.330). The study also found that brightness variation correlates more weakly with liking, suggesting that color variation cannot be reduced to value alone. Read the study at Journal of Vision.

The Post-Impressionists pushed color further. Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) used color expressively rather than descriptively. The Night Cafe (1888) uses clashing reds and greens to communicate what Van Gogh called "the terrible passions of humanity by means of the two most discordant colors." Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) used color to build form, constructing volumes from patches of warm and cool color rather than from light and shadow. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and the Fauves used color as an independent expressive element, freed from any obligation to describe reality. Matisse's The Red Studio (1911) covers the entire canvas in a single, unmodulated red, dissolving the distinction between figure and ground.

The 20th century brought color into non-objective art. Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and Mark Rothko (1903-1970) made color the subject of painting. Rothko's large color-field paintings, including No. 61 (Rust and Blue) (1953), use floating rectangles of saturated color to create meditative, emotional experiences. Rothko believed that color could communicate directly, without the mediation of subject matter.

A 2025 study published in the Journal of Vision measured perceived color saturation using hue and saturation scaling, comparing the results with chromatic visual evoked potentials (cVEP) recorded from early visual cortex. The study found that saturation varies with the magnitude of cone contrast, and that equiluminant complementary colors appear equally saturated. The neural data showed that cVEP amplitude's dependence on cone contrast resembled the behavioral scaling data, suggesting that saturation is likely a result of integration of color-evoked responses over the entire population of neurons in early visual cortex. Key Artists and Their Use of Color

Titian (c. 1488-1576)

Titian's mastery of color glazing set the standard for oil painting for 400 years. His Bacchus and Ariadne (1520-1523) uses ultramarine blue, vermilion red, and lead-tin yellow in a composition that demonstrates how saturated colors can create both depth and emotional intensity. Titian's late works, including The Flaying of Marsyas (c. 1570-1576), use a darker, more restricted palette that influenced the Baroque.

Claude Monet (1840-1926)

Monet's Haystacks series (1890-1891) consists of 25 paintings of the same subject at different times of day and in different seasons. The paintings demonstrate that color is not a property of objects but of light. The same haystack appears orange at sunset, blue at dawn, and white in snow. Monet proved that color is contextual and that the artist's job is to observe and record the specific color of light in a specific moment.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)

Van Gogh used complementary color contrast as an expressive tool. The Starry Night (1889) pairs deep blues with bright yellows, creating a visual vibration that communicates the emotional intensity Van Gogh felt when looking at the night sky. His Sunflowers series (1888) uses a restricted palette of yellows and ochres to create a composition that is both warm and melancholic.

Henri Matisse (1869-1954)

Matisse's The Red Studio (1911) is a landmark in the use of color as an independent element. The entire painting is red, with the objects in the studio outlined in thinner lines of yellow or blue. The color is not descriptive. The studio was not red. The color is the subject, and it flattens the space while simultaneously creating an overwhelming emotional environment.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970)

Rothko's color-field paintings use large, soft-edged rectangles of saturated color stacked vertically. Orange and Yellow (1956) and No. 14 (1960) create environments of pure color that the viewer is meant to experience physically, standing close enough that the color fills the field of vision. Rothko's work demonstrates that color, at sufficient scale, can produce an emotional response that bypasses representation entirely.

How to Analyze Color in a Work of Art

Start with the palette. How many colors has the artist used? Is the palette warm or cool? Saturated or muted? A restricted palette creates unity and focus. A broad palette creates variety and energy. Monet's Haystacks use a broad palette to capture the full range of light. Rothko's paintings use a restricted palette to create intensity through repetition.

Next, look at color relationships. Are the colors complementary, analogous, or triadic? Complementary colors create contrast and tension. Analogous colors create harmony and calm. The relationship between colors is as important as the colors themselves.

Finally, look at how color creates space. Warm colors advance. Cool colors recede. Saturated colors attract attention. Desaturated colors recede into the background. Artists use these perceptual effects to create depth, direct the eye, and establish hierarchy within a composition.

Color is connected to several other elements of art. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color, and it is arguably more important than hue for creating readable compositions. Chiaroscuro is the technique of using strong value contrast to model form. Line and shape can be defined by color boundaries rather than drawn lines. Space is created partly through color temperature, with warm colors advancing and cool colors receding. Practice Color Yourself

Take a single colored object, an apple, a cup, a book, and paint it five times. Each time, change one property. Change the hue. Change the saturation. Change the brightness. Change the background color. Change the light source. You will discover that the color of the object is not fixed.
