In July 2026, a team of researchers from the CNRS announced they had precisely dated paintings inside Font-de-Gaume cave in Dordogne, France, for the first time. They discovered charcoal hidden inside black pigments that everyone had assumed were made only from minerals. That charcoal let them radiocarbon-date a bison on the cave wall to roughly 13,300 years ago. They also found that a mask-like figure on the same wall was not a single artwork but was built up across three separate periods spanning thousands of years. The cave had been revisited, again and again, by people who added to what was already there. That is the strange reality of rock art. It is not a gallery of finished pieces. It is a palimpsest of human presence stretching back tens of thousands of years, made by people whose names and languages we will never know.
Rock art is the collective term for the paintings, engravings, and markings that prehistoric humans made on natural rock surfaces. It includes cave paintings (pigment applied to cave walls and ceilings), petroglyphs (images carved or pecked into rock), pictographs (pigment applied to open-air rock surfaces), and geoglyphs (large-scale ground drawings). The earliest known rock art dates to at least 45,500 years ago, and the tradition spans every inhabited continent. Rock art is not a movement or a style. It is the foundational record of human image-making, produced over a period longer than all of recorded history combined.

Rock art divides into two broad categories based on how it was made. Pictographs are painted or drawn images, created by applying pigment to a rock surface. These pigments were mixed with binders like animal fat, water, saliva, or blood and applied with fingers, brushes made from animal hair or plant fibers, or by blowing pigment through a hollow bone or directly from the mouth. The bird bone coated with red ochre found at Altamira, analyzed as part of the First Art project, was almost certainly used as an airbrush for spraying pigment onto cave walls. Some paintings were made by stenciling: placing a hand against the wall and blowing pigment around it, leaving a negative handprint. The hand stencils at Maltravieso Cave in Extremadura, Spain, number over 70 and were made by multiple individuals over a long period.
Petroglyphs were made by striking a rock surface with a harder stone tool to remove the weathered outer layer and expose the lighter unweathered rock beneath. This technique, called pecking, was used for the cup-and-ring marks found across Britain and Ireland. Other petroglyphs were made by scratching or abrading the surface with a sharp tool. The result is a line or shape that stands out visually against the surrounding rock.
The oldest known figurative rock art is a painting of a Sulawesi warty pig found in Leang Tedongnge cave on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, dated to at least 45,500 years ago. A nearby cave, Leang Bulu' Sipong 4, contains a hunting scene with human-animal hybrids dated to at least 43,900 years ago. These dates, published in 2019 and 2021, pushed the origin of figurative art deep into the Upper Paleolithic and confirmed that rock art appeared independently in Southeast Asia and Europe.
In Europe, the oldest known cave paintings are at El Castillo Cave in Spain, where a red disk on a wall was dated to at least 40,800 years ago, and a hand stencil at the same site was dated to 37,300 years ago. The question of whether the earliest European cave art was made by Neanderthals or by early modern humans remains debated. The dates from El Castillo are close enough to the period of Neanderthal presence in Europe that some researchers have argued for Neanderthal authorship, though the evidence is not conclusive.
The great period of European cave painting runs from roughly 35,000 to 10,000 years ago. The most famous sites include Chauvet Cave (discovered 1994, paintings dated 32,000-30,000 years ago), Altamira (discovered 1868, paintings dated 36,000-13,000 years ago), Lascaux (discovered 1940, paintings dated 17,000 years ago), and Niaux (paintings dated 14,000-13,000 years ago). Outside Europe, rock art traditions span enormous time ranges. The Bradshaw paintings of the Kimberley region in Australia may be over 50,000 years old. The rock engravings at Twyfelfontein in Namibia date from 2,000 to 6,000 years ago. The petroglyphs at Alta in northern Norway were made between 6,200 and 2,000 years ago. The Nazca Lines in Peru, geoglyphs on a vast scale, were created between 500 BCE and 500 CE. Rock art was not a one-time invention. It was a practice that emerged independently in different human populations and continued for millennia.
Chauvet contains over 1,000 paintings of animals, including lions, horses, rhinoceroses, and cave bears. The most famous panel shows a group of lions running, their bodies overlapping in a way that suggests motion. The artists used charcoal and red ochre, and they used the natural contours of the cave wall to give the animals three-dimensional volume. Chauvet is closed to the public, but a full-scale replica, Chauvet 2, is open nearby.
Lascaux is the most famous decorated cave in the world, sometimes called the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistoric Art." The Hall of the Bulls contains paintings of aurochs, horses, and stags, some over 5 meters long. The Shaft of the Dead Man contains a rare depiction of a human figure, a bird-headed man falling backward beside a bison. Altamira's ceiling is covered with polychrome bison painted in red and black, so detailed that when it was discovered in 1868, experts refused to believe it was prehistoric. The warty pig at Leang Tedongnge and the hunting scene at Leang Bulu' Sipong 4 predate the European cave art tradition by thousands of years. The paintings are deteriorating rapidly due to climate change and salt weathering, making documentation and conservation urgent.
The rock art of Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territory spans an extraordinary time range, from paintings made over 50,000 years ago to works made within the last century. The X-ray style, showing internal organs and bone structure of animals, is distinctive to the region. The art documents continuous cultural practice over an unmatched timespan.
In June 2026, a team led by Alba Bossoms Mesa of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology published the first recovery of ancient human DNA from cave walls. Working within the First Art project, the team collected 54 samples from 24 rock art panels across 11 caves in Spain and Portugal. From a calcite-encrusted red dot at Escoural Cave in Portugal, they recovered ancient human DNA at least 4,000 to 5,000 years old, possibly much older. The sample contained no animal DNA, suggesting direct human contact with the wall. They could not determine whether the DNA came from the artist or from someone who touched the wall later. Also in 2026, a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory analyzed 500 graphic motifs from nine Magdalenian caves in the Basque Country using network analysis. The researcher, Iñaki Intxaurbe of the University of the Basque Country, found that the images were not arranged randomly. Bison, horses, and ibex occupied central positions in the compositions, with other animals arranged around them. Horses consistently faced right while other animals generally faced left. The study demonstrated that Magdalenian cave art, dating to roughly 16,000-14,000 years ago, had a syntactic structure, an organizational logic behind the placement of figures.
