Portrait Photography: The Photographic Portrait From Nadar to Catherine Opie

In 1856, a French photographer named Felix Nadar opened a studio at 113 Rue Saint-Lazare in Paris. Nadar photographed the writers, painters, politicians, and scientists of his day with a directness that was unlike anything else in portraiture. He rejected the painted backdrops and theatrical props that other studios used. He used a plain background and a single light source. Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire, Sarah Bernhardt, and Gustave Dore sat for him, and the portraits that resulted show people as they were, not as they wished to appear. Nadar wrote that he wanted to capture "the intimate resemblance, the intimate physiognomy" of his sitters. He understood something that portrait photographers have been pursuing ever since: the camera can reveal a person in a way that painting, with its flattering corrections and idealized proportions, cannot.

Portrait photography is the practice of using a camera to create images of people that convey their appearance, character, and presence. A photographic portrait is not a mere record of a face. It is a constructed image, shaped by the photographer's choices about lighting, framing, pose, lens, background, and timing. The portrait photographer works with a subject who is also a collaborator, and the resulting image is a product of that exchange. Portrait photography as fine art goes further: the portrait is not made to flatter or to document but to express something about the person, the photographer, or the relationship between them.

What Is Portrait Photography?

A portrait photograph is an image of a person that is intended to convey something about who they are. The distinction between a portrait and a snapshot of a person is intent. A snapshot records that someone was present. A portrait attempts to say something about them. The photographer makes deliberate choices about every element in the frame: the distance from the subject, the angle of the camera, the quality and direction of light, the background, the pose or lack of pose, and the moment of exposure.

Portrait photography overlaps with but is distinct from other photographic genres. Fine art photography uses the camera as an expressive tool across all subjects. Portrait photography focuses specifically on the human subject. Documentary photography records real situations, and a documentary portrait may be part of that record, but a fine art portrait is not bound by documentary conventions. The portrait photographer may stage, direct, or construct the image rather than simply observe it.

The technical foundations of portrait photography have remained consistent for over a century. The most common portrait focal length is between 50mm and 105mm on a full-frame sensor, because these lenses produce a natural perspective at typical portrait distances. Wider lenses distort facial features when used close. Longer lenses compress space and produce a flattering perspective but require more working distance. Lighting ranges from a single window to complex multi-light studio setups, but the principle is the same: light defines form, and the direction and quality of light determine how the face is sculpted in the image.

Origins and History

The Studio Era (1840s-1880s)

Portrait photography began as a commercial service. When the daguerreotype was announced in 1839, the first practical application was portraiture. Daguerreotype studios opened across Europe and America in the 1840s, offering middle-class people the chance to own a likeness that previously only the wealthy could afford through painted miniatures. The exposures were long, often several seconds, and sitters had to be held still by head braces. The results were formal, stiff, and often striking.

The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. is presenting From Shadow to Substance: Grand-Scale Portraits During Photography's Formative Years from June 20, 2026 through June 7, 2026, tracing the evolution of the whole-plate portrait format from daguerreotype to ambrotype to tintype. The exhibition includes daguerreotypes of Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, an ambrotype of landscape painter John Frederick Kensett, and a tintype of an unidentified African American woman. Nadar, working in Paris from the 1850s, elevated the studio portrait to an art form. His plain backgrounds and direct approach stripped away the artifice of the commercial studio. In England, Julia Margaret Cameron took a different path. Beginning in 1864, Cameron used a large-format camera with a lens designed for a smaller format, producing portraits with soft focus and long exposures that gave her images a painterly, almost spiritual quality. Her portraits of Alfred Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, and her servants and neighbors were not flattering likenesses. They were attempts to capture inner character, and they were dismissed by many of her contemporaries as technically incompetent. Today they are recognized as some of the first portrait photographs made as art rather than commerce.

The Modern Portrait (1900s-1960s)

The 20th century transformed portrait photography. The introduction of smaller cameras, faster film, and electric lighting gave photographers the ability to work outside the studio. August Sander's project People of the Twentieth Century, begun in the 1910s and continued through the 1920s and 1930s, photographed German people across social classes with a consistent, frontal approach. Sander's portraits were documentary in method but conceptual in scope: he was building a typology of a society through its faces.

Richard Avedon brought portrait photography into the realm of fine art through his work for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue and his gallery exhibitions. Avedon's portraits, shot against plain white backgrounds with natural light, stripped away all context except the person. His series In the American West (1979-1984), commissioned by the Amon Carter Museum, photographed working people in the American West with the same direct, unflinching approach he had applied to fashion subjects. A coal miner, a beekeeper covered in bees, a slaughterhouse worker: Avedon treated them all with the same formal precision, and the portraits are both empathetic and unsettling.

Diane Arbus photographed people on the margins of American society with a directness that still provokes debate. Her portraits of giants, twins, transvestites, and people with disabilities were made with a twin-lens reflex camera at close range, often with flash. Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey (1967) shows two girls standing side by side, their physical sameness made strange by the camera's attention. Arbus's work asked whether a portrait could reveal something about a person that they did not intend to show, and whether that revelation was an act of empathy or exploitation.

Contemporary Portraiture (1970s-Present)

Contemporary portrait photography has expanded the genre in every direction. Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) used self-portraiture to examine how female identity is constructed in visual culture. Sherman was both the photographer and the subject, and the portraits are of fictional characters, not of Sherman herself. The series raised the question of whether a portrait requires a real subject or whether it can be a portrait of an idea.

Annie Leibovitz combined celebrity portraiture with fine art ambition, producing staged, narrative portraits for Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone that became cultural icons in their own right. Her portrait of a naked John Lennon curled against Yoko Ono, taken hours before Lennon's death in December 1980, is one of the most recognized portrait photographs ever made.

Catherine Opie has spent over 30 years making portraits that question who is seen and how. Her Portraits series of the 1990s photographed her LGBTQ+ friends in poses derived from Hans Holbein's court paintings, ennobling a community that had been excluded from formal portraiture. The National Portrait Gallery in London presented Catherine Opie: To Be Seen from March 5 to May 31, 2026, the first major UK museum exhibition of her work. Opie also placed her portraits within the gallery's permanent collection, creating dialogues between her contemporary photographs and historic paintings. The Hill Art Foundation in New York presented The Lost Beauty of Humankind: Robert Bergman's Portraits in the Hill Collection from January 15 to April 11, 2026, placing Bergman's large-scale portraits of ordinary people encountered on American streets between 1985 and 1993 alongside Old Master paintings by Rubens and Bassano. The exhibition argued that Bergman's portraits perform the same function as religious portraiture: they return the viewer to a moment of recognition and vulnerability. Key Artists and Masterworks

Felix Nadar (1820-1910)

Nadar's portraits of 19th-century Parisian cultural figures defined the studio portrait as an art form. His 1856 portrait of Charles Baudelaire shows the poet with his head slightly turned, eyes meeting the camera with an expression that is neither friendly nor hostile. Nadar used natural light and plain backgrounds, and he wrote that the photographer's task was to capture not just the appearance but the "moral intelligence" of the sitter. His studio at the Boulevard des Capucines became a gathering place for the Parisian avant-garde.

Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879)

Cameron began photographing at age 48, in 1863, using a camera given to her as a gift. She used a large-format camera with a lens designed for a smaller format, producing portraits with soft focus that her contemporaries considered technically flawed. Her portrait of Thomas Carlyle (1867) shows the philosopher from the side, his face emerging from darkness with an intensity that a sharp, conventionally correct portrait could not achieve. Cameron's work was rediscovered in the 20th century and is now held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Richard Avedon (1923-2004)

Avedon's In the American West (1985) is one of the most significant portrait projects of the 20th century. Commissioned by the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, Avedon photographed 752 people across 17 states over five years. Every portrait was made outdoors against a white paper background, with natural light. The series includes Ronald Fischer, Beekeeper (1981), showing a man with bees covering his face and chest, and Sandra Bennett, 12 Years Old, Rocky Ford, Colorado (1980). The portraits are unsentimental and direct, and they transformed the conventions of documentary portraiture.

Diane Arbus (1923-1971)

Arbus's portraits are among the most reproduced photographs of the 20th century. Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park (1962) shows a boy standing in a park, his body contorted and his expression strained, holding a toy grenade. The portrait is not flattering, and it is not documentary. It is a portrait of a child caught at a moment that reveals something about him that a smile would have concealed. Arbus's work is held in the collections of MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Catherine Opie (b. 1961)

Opie's Being and Having (1991) shows a figure with a mustache drawn on in marker, wearing a cowboy hat, looking directly at the camera. The portrait is part of a series that photographed Opie's queer community in poses borrowed from Renaissance and Baroque portraiture. By placing marginalized subjects in the visual language of court painting, Opie asked who deserves to be portrayed and why. Her work is held in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Tate Modern.

Portrait Photography Today

In 2026, portrait photography exists in a paradoxical state. More portraits are made than ever before. Smartphone cameras produce billions of self-portraits daily, and social media platforms have made the photographic portrait a primary form of social communication. Yet the fine art portrait, made with intention and exhibited in galleries and museums, remains a distinct practice with its own conventions and standards.

The Villa Tamaris in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France, is presenting 200 ans de portraits! from September 2 to October 31, 2026, a retrospective of 300 portrait photographs spanning two centuries, from Nadar to contemporary practitioners.
