Large Format Photography: The View Camera and Sheet Film Tradition

Large format photography uses view cameras and individual sheets of film, 4x5 inches or larger. From Watkins and Adams to 2026's new cameras, learn the tradition.

In September 2026, a Slovenian photographer named Elvis Halilovic will begin shipping a new 8x10 large-format camera called the Ondu Eikan. It weighs 3.5 kilograms, folds into a compact package, and is made from European walnut and powder-coated aluminum. It is designed to be carried into the mountains, which is unusual for an 8x10 camera. Most large-format cameras are heavy, cumbersome objects that require a dedicated tripod and a strong back. Halilovic built his camera because he wanted to use 8x10 sheet film in places where large-format cameras rarely go. The fact that someone is designing and manufacturing a new 8x10 camera in 2026, 187 years after photography was invented, tells you something about what large format offers that no other format can.

Large format photography is the practice of using cameras that expose individual sheets of film, typically 4x5 inches or larger, rather than roll film or digital sensors. The camera is a view camera: a front standard holding the lens, a rear standard holding the ground glass and film holder, and a bellows connecting the two. The standards move independently, allowing the photographer to control perspective and focus plane with a precision that no other camera type offers. Large format is the slowest, most deliberate, and most technically demanding form of photography, and it produces negatives of extraordinary detail and tonal range.

What Is a Large Format Camera and How Does It Work?

A large-format camera has three main components: a front standard, a rear standard, and a bellows between them. The front standard holds the lens board and lens. The rear standard holds the ground glass for focusing and, during exposure, the film holder. The bellows is a light-tight, accordion-like structure that allows the two standards to move independently while maintaining a sealed path for light to travel from lens to film.

The defining feature of a large-format camera is its movements. The front and rear standards can tilt, swing, rise, fall, and shift independently. These movements allow the photographer to control the image in ways that fixed cameras cannot. Tilting the lens or the back changes the plane of focus, allowing the photographer to bring an entire landscape from foreground to infinity into focus at a wide aperture, or to isolate a narrow slice of focus at any distance. This is called the Scheimpflug principle, named after Theodor Scheimpflug, who described it in 1904. Rising the front standard shifts the image upward without tilting the camera, which keeps vertical lines parallel in architectural photography. Swinging the standards adjusts the focus plane horizontally, useful for photographing flat subjects at an angle.

Focusing is done on a ground glass at the rear of the camera. The photographer composes and focuses the image upside down and reversed left to right, under a dark cloth, using a magnifying loupe. Once the image is focused and composed, the photographer closes the shutter, inserts a film holder between the ground glass and the bellows, withdraws the dark slide that covers the film, makes the exposure, and reinserts the dark slide. Each sheet of film is exposed individually, which means each frame can be developed individually with its own development time. This is the basis of the Zone System, which relies on individual development of each negative.

The most common large-format film sizes are 4x5 inches and 8x10 inches. 4x5 is the practical standard: the camera is portable enough to carry in the field, the film holders are manageable, and the negatives produce prints with extraordinary detail up to 16x20 inches or larger. 8x10 is the serious large format: the negatives are four times the area of 4x5, producing contact prints of 8x10 inches with detail that no enlarged print can match. Beyond 8x10, there are 11x14, 16x20, and even 20x24 inch formats, used by a small number of dedicated practitioners.

Origins and History

Large-format photography is as old as photography itself. The earliest cameras were large-format cameras because the available photographic materials, metal plates, glass plates, and paper, required large formats to produce usable images. Daguerre's cameras in the 1830s used plates that were typically 6.5 by 8.5 inches, the whole-plate format. The wet plate collodion process, introduced in 1851, used glass plates in various sizes, and the cameras of the 1850s through the 1870s were essentially large-format view cameras with wooden bodies and leather bellows.

Carleton Watkins's mammoth-plate camera, used in Yosemite in 1861, produced negatives 18 by 22 inches. The camera was enormous, and the glass plates had to be coated with collodion and developed on site, while still wet. Watkins hauled this equipment into the wilderness on muleback. The images he produced are still among the finest landscape photographs ever made, and they would not have been possible without the scale and detail that large-format negatives provide.

The introduction of flexible film in the late 19th century and roll film in the early 20th century made smaller cameras possible. The Leica, introduced in 1925, used 35mm film and transformed photojournalism. But large-format cameras did not disappear. They remained the tool of choice for landscape, architectural, and studio photographers who needed the detail, tonal range, and perspective control that only a view camera could provide.

Ansel Adams used 8x10 and 4x5 cameras throughout his career. His Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941) was made on an 8x10 view camera. Edward Weston used an 8x10 view camera for his peppers, shells, nudes, and landscapes. The 8x10 negative allowed Weston to make contact prints with a level of detail that enlargement could not match. Adams and Weston, along with Imogen Cunningham and others, formed Group f/64 in 1932, named after the smallest aperture on a large-format lens, which produced the sharpest possible image. Their manifesto advocated for "the full potentialities of the medium" through sharp focus and full tonal range, both of which large-format cameras provided better than any other format.

Key Practitioners

Carleton Watkins (1829-1916)

Watkins's mammoth-plate photographs of Yosemite, made with a camera producing 18x22 inch negatives, are the foundation of large-format landscape photography. The scale of the negatives allowed Watkins to capture the granite walls and waterfalls of Yosemite with a detail and tonal range that no smaller camera could match. His work was shown to Congress and directly influenced the protection of Yosemite in 1864.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984)

Adams used 8x10 and 4x5 view cameras throughout his career. His Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941), made on an 8x10 camera, is the most famous large-format photograph ever made. Adams co-developed the Zone System with Fred Archer, a method of controlling exposure and development that is specific to large-format photography because it requires individual development of each negative. Adams's three-volume instructional series, The Camera (1980), The Negative (1981), and The Print (1983), remains the standard reference for large-format practice.

Edward Weston (1886-1958)

Weston used an 8x10 view camera for his most celebrated work, including Pepper No. 30 (1930). The 8x10 negative allowed Weston to make contact prints with a level of detail and tonal range that no enlarged print could match. Weston believed that contact printing preserved the quality of the negative without the degradation that a lens introduces during enlargement.

Sally Mann (b. 1951)

Mann's Immediate Family series (1984-1994) was shot on an 8x10 view camera using black-and-white film. The large negative produces images of extraordinary detail and tonal subtlety. Her more recent work uses the wet plate collodion process, a 19th-century technique that produces images on glass plates coated with collodion and silver nitrate, using an 8x10 view camera. The process is slow and unpredictable, and the resulting images have flaws and artifacts that become part of their character.

Andreas Gursky (b. 1955)

Gursky uses large-format film cameras to produce photographs of enormous scale and precision. His Rhein II (1999), which sold for $4.3 million in 2011, was made with a large-format camera and digitally manipulated to remove a factory building. Gursky's prints, which can be several meters wide, require the resolution that only large-format negatives provide.

Large Format in 2026

Large-format photography in 2026 is a niche practice, but it is a growing niche. The film photography revival has brought new practitioners to large format, and new equipment is being designed and manufactured. It uses Sinar-compatible components and is designed to make 8x10 monorail movements portable. A 2026 reinterpretation of Ansel Adams's The Negative by photographer Paul Macpherson argues that Adams's large-format principles translate directly to contemporary practice: "A serious photograph is the result of an intentional chain of decisions, and every link in that chain is physical." Northern Virginia Community College offers PHT 206, a dedicated large-format photography course, in its Summer and Fall 2026 semesters, covering 4x5 view camera techniques, sheet film processing, and the image-making advantages of large format. The fact that a community college is teaching large-format photography in 2026 is evidence that the format is not dying. It is being taught to a new generation.

Why Large Format Still Matters

The answer is detail. An 8x10 negative contains roughly 15 times the area of a 4x5 negative and 60 times the area of a 35mm negative. When contact printed, an 8x10 negative produces a print with resolution that no digital sensor can match. A 100-megapixel digital sensor produces a file that can be printed to about 40x50 inches before interpolation becomes visible. An 8x10 negative, scanned at high resolution, can produce files of 500 megapixels or more, with tonal information in the highlights and shadows that digital sensors clip or noise.

The second answer is control. The movements of a view camera, tilt, swing, rise, fall, and shift, allow the photographer to control perspective and focus plane in ways that no fixed camera can. Architectural photographers use rise to keep vertical lines parallel. Landscape photographers use tilt to bring an entire scene from foreground to infinity into focus. Product photographers use swing and tilt to control the focus plane across a flat surface. These movements can be simulated in software after the fact, but the simulation is never as precise or as clean as controlling the image at the moment of capture.

The third answer is pace. Large-format photography is slow. Setting up the camera, composing on the ground glass, focusing with a loupe, loading the film holder, and making a single exposure can take 15 to 30 minutes. This pace changes how the photographer works. You do not make 300 exposures in an afternoon with a large-format camera. You make 5 or 10. Each one is considered. The constraint is not a limitation. It is the point.

Large format is closely related to film photography, specifically the use of sheet film rather than roll film. The Zone System was developed for large-format photography because it requires individual development of each negative. Contact printing is the natural printing method for large-format negatives, producing prints at the same size as the negative. The negative is the physical record produced by each sheet of film. Large-format photographs are best seen as original prints, where the detail and tonal range of the negative can be appreciated. When you look at a large-format photograph, get close. The detail in a contact print from an 8x10 negative is visible at distances where a digital print would show interpolation artifacts. The tonal range, from the deepest black with texture to the brightest white with detail, is wider than what digital sensors capture. The difference is not subtle.
