In 1925, a philosophy professor published a book that changed American culture. His name was Alain LeRoy Locke, and the book was called The New Negro: An Interpretation. It was an anthology of essays, poetry, fiction, and art that argued for a new vision of African American identity: not the stereotype of the rural, uneducated, formerly enslaved person, but the modern, urban, self-determined citizen. Locke was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard and the first Black Rhodes Scholar. His book included an essay called "The Legacy of the Ancestral Arts," which invited Black artists to embrace African aesthetics as a source of modern expression. The book became the intellectual foundation of the Harlem Renaissance, a period of extraordinary creative activity in Harlem, New York, that produced the first African American-led movement of international modern art.
The Harlem Renaissance was a period of rich cross-disciplinary activity in African American art and culture that lasted from approximately 1918 to 1937. It was centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, though its influence extended across the United States and to Europe and the Caribbean. The Harlem Renaissance is a cultural movement in which African American artists, writers, musicians, and intellectuals produced a body of work that asserted a new, modern Black identity. In visual art, the movement is characterized by several features: the use of African and African diasporic imagery and aesthetics, the depiction of Black life in both rural and urban settings, engagement with modernist techniques including Cubism and Art Deco, and a commitment to representing Black subjects with dignity and complexity. The movement was not confined to visual art. It produced writers like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Countee Cullen; musicians like Duke Ellington and Fats Waller; and political thinkers like W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey.
In visual art, the Harlem Renaissance is often associated with a specific aesthetic: the silhouette-like figures and concentric circles of Aaron Douglas, the sculptural forms of Meta Warrick Fuller, the vibrant portraits of Archibald Motley, and the dignified photographs of James Van Der Zee. But the movement was broader than any single style. It included realist portraiture, modernist abstraction, documentary photography, and public mural painting. What united these artists was a shared project: creating a visual culture that reflected the complexity and modernity of Black American life.
The Cooper Gallery at Harvard, renamed in 2025 in honor of Alain LeRoy Locke, is presenting Renaissance, Race and Representation in the Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African American Art from October 1, 2025 to June 16, 2026. The exhibition coincides with the centennial anniversary of the publication of "Harlem, Mecca of the New Negro," the pathbreaking special issue of the social science journal Survey Graphic in which Locke outlined his vision for Afro-modernist aesthetics. The exhibition draws on the Kelley family's collection of works by Aaron Douglas, William H. The Harlem Renaissance was made possible by the Great Migration, the movement of approximately 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the urban North between 1910 and 1970. The first wave, from 1910 to 1930, brought hundreds of thousands of Black Americans to cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit, fleeing Jim Crow laws, racial violence, and the boll weevil devastation of Southern cotton agriculture. Harlem, a neighborhood in upper Manhattan, became the largest Black urban community in the United States.
The movement was also shaped by World War I. Black soldiers who fought in Europe experienced a degree of freedom and respect that they had not known in the American South. When they returned, they brought a renewed demand for civil rights and a refusal to accept second-class citizenship. The Red Summer of 1919, in which white mobs attacked Black communities in dozens of cities, made the urgency of racial justice impossible to ignore.
The intellectual foundation was laid by W.E.B. Du Bois, who argued in his 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk that Black Americans deserved full political, social, and cultural participation. Du Bois also founded the NAACP's magazine The Crisis in 1910, which published art, literature, and political writing by Black authors and became a key platform for Harlem Renaissance writers and artists. Locke's The New Negro in 1925 consolidated these ideas into a program for cultural self-determination.
The Met's 2024 exhibition, the first survey of the Harlem Renaissance in New York since 1987, featured over 160 artworks by Black artists from the 1920s through the 1940s. The exhibition was organized into sections highlighting activism, nightlife, and everyday life, and it showed works by Charles Alston, Aaron Douglas, Meta Warrick Fuller, William H. Johnson, Archibald Motley, Winold Reiss, Augusta Savage, James Van Der Zee, and Laura Wheeler Waring, alongside portrayals of African diasporan subjects by Matisse, Munch, and Picasso. Douglas was the defining visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Topeka, Kansas, he moved to Harlem in 1925 and developed an immediately recognizable style: silhouette-like figures rendered in muted tones, surrounded by concentric circles and radiating lines that suggest both African design and Art Deco geometry. His illustrations for James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse (1927) are among the most iconic images of the movement. His mural series Aspects of Negro Life (1934, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture) traces African American history from Africa through slavery to emancipation and modern life. Douglas also illustrated the cover of Locke's The New Negro. The Ackland Art Museum presented Modern Black Culture: The Art of Aaron Douglas, exploring how Douglas gave visual form to the idea that Black American culture is a modern culture of diaspora, tracing connections between Black Americans in the urban North, the rural South, Haiti, Africa, and Egypt. Fuller was a sculptor who studied with Auguste Rodin in Paris and was exhibiting work before the Harlem Renaissance officially began. Her Ethiopia Awakening (1914) is a small sculpture of a Black woman emerging from mummy wrappings, symbolizing the awakening of African identity. Fuller's work predates the Harlem Renaissance but provided a model for the movement's engagement with African heritage and Black dignity. She was one of the first Black American artists to address African themes in sculpture.
Motley painted vibrant scenes of Black nightlife in Chicago and Paris. His Blues (1929, Whitney Museum of American Art) shows a crowded nightclub with musicians and dancers rendered in vivid color. His Black Belt (1934) depicts a Chicago street scene with a range of skin tones and social types, celebrating the diversity of Black urban life. Motley's work is notable for its attention to the variety of Black skin tones, which he painted with deliberate care to represent the full range of Black identity.
Savage was a sculptor and educator who played a central role in the Harlem Renaissance as a teacher and organizer. Her The Harp (1939), created for the New York World's Fair, was a 16-foot sculpture based on James Weldon Johnson's poem "Lift Every Voice and Sing," showing a harp formed by standing figures. The sculpture was destroyed when the fair ended. Savage founded the Savage Studio of Arts and Crafts in Harlem in 1932, where she taught a generation of younger Black artists, including Jacob Lawrence and Norman Lewis.
Van Der Zee was the photographer of the Harlem Renaissance. He operated a studio in Harlem from 1916 to 1969 and documented every aspect of Black life in the neighborhood: portraits of families, couples, soldiers, athletes, and celebrities, as well as street scenes, funerals, and parades. His portraits often included painted backdrops and props that created idealized settings for his subjects. Van Der Zee's work was rediscovered in 1969 when it was included in the Metropolitan Museum's exhibition Harlem on My Mind, making him famous at the age of 83.
Hayden's The Janitor Who Paints (1937, Smithsonian American Art Museum) shows a Black janitor painting in his apartment, surrounded by cleaning supplies, with his wife and child posing for him. The painting addresses the economic reality that many Black artists had to work menial jobs to support their art. Hayden's work is often debated for its use of caricature and folk style, which some viewers see as self-mocking and others see as a deliberate engagement with vernacular traditions.
The Harlem Renaissance's first phase runs from approximately 1918 to 1929, from the end of World War I to the stock market crash. This is the period of the movement's greatest energy and visibility, centered on the salons, publications, and galleries of Harlem. Locke's The New Negro was published in 1925. Survey Graphic published its special Harlem issue in March 1925. The Cotton Club opened in 1923. This period saw the emergence of Douglas, Van Der Zee, Savage, and the writers Hughes, Hurston, and Cullen.
The second phase runs from 1929 to 1937, from the Depression to the end of the movement. The economic crash reduced patronage for Black artists, and many of the movement's key figures left Harlem. The Federal Art Project of the WPA provided new support, employing Black artists including Douglas, Savage, and Charles Alston. The movement's end is usually dated to the late 1930s, though its influence continued through the work of artists like Jacob Lawrence, who was a teenager in Harlem in the 1930s and studied with Savage and Alston before creating his Migration Series in 1940-1941.
The Harlem Renaissance's legacy was suppressed for decades. Major museums did not collect or exhibit work by Black artists from this period until the 1960s and 1970s. The Metropolitan Museum's 2024 exhibition was the first survey of the Harlem Renaissance in New York since 1987, a gap of 37 years. The movement's influence, however, never disappeared. It shaped the Civil Rights era, the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and contemporary artists who engage with Black identity and African diasporic culture. Aaron Douglas's visual language, with its silhouettes and concentric circles, has been referenced by contemporary artists including Kara Walker. The movement's insistence on representing Black life with dignity and complexity remains a live project in contemporary art.
The Harlem Renaissance is connected to Social Realism through its depiction of Black working-class life and its political engagement, though the Harlem Renaissance was broader in its aesthetic range. It overlaps with Expressionism and modernist movements through its engagement with Cubism and African art. The movement's use of African aesthetics connects to the broader concept of Cubism, which also drew on African masks and sculpture.
