In 1931, an artist painted 23 gouaches about the trial and execution of two Italian immigrants named Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. The two men, anarchist shoemakers, had been convicted of murder in a trial widely regarded as politically motivated. They were executed in 1927. Protests had been held around the world. The artist, Ben Shahn, had attended the funeral. His paintings show the defendants in chains, the judge who sentenced them, the witnesses who lied, and the mourners who lined the streets of Boston. The series is called The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti. It is one of the most powerful works of political art ever made in America, and it is a defining work of Social Realism, a movement that treated art as a weapon in the fight for social justice.
Social Realism is an American art movement of the 1920s through the 1950s in which artists used figurative, realistic painting to address social and political problems: poverty, unemployment, racial injustice, labor exploitation, and the rise of fascism. Social Realist painters depicted the working class, the poor, and the disenfranchised not as picturesque subjects but as people caught in systems of power. The movement is distinct from Socialist Realism, the state-mandated art style of the Soviet Union, though the two are often confused. Social Realism was independent, critical of both capitalism and Soviet dogma, and driven by the artists' personal political convictions rather than by government directive.
This entry covers what Social Realism is, how it emerged from the Ashcan School and the Great Depression, which artists defined it, and how a movement that treated art as a political weapon fell out of favor in the Cold War era.
Social Realism is figurative art that addresses social and political injustice. It is realistic in the sense that it depicts recognizable people, places, and events, but it is not neutral documentation. Social Realist art takes a side. It shows the world from the perspective of the oppressed rather than the powerful. The subjects are workers, strikers, the unemployed, evicted families, racial minorities, and victims of political persecution. The style is often harsh, with simplified forms, dark palettes, and sharp contrasts that convey anger and urgency.
The movement is sometimes confused with American Scene Painting and Regionalism, which also depicted American life in the 1930s. Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and John Steuart Curry painted rural and small-town America, but their work was romanticized and generally avoided explicit social criticism. Social Realism, by contrast, was critical and political. Where Regionalism celebrated American folk culture, Social Realism exposed American inequality.
As the Penn State University Press anthology The Social and the Real: Political Art of the 1930s in the Western Hemisphere argues, the origins of Social Realism should be traced not to the United States in the 1930s but to Mexico in the early 1920s, where Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros were painting murals that addressed social injustice, labor, and indigenous history. The anthology contends that thinking about art and politics in a hemispheric context expands the chronology of Social Realism, beginning in Mexico and continuing through the 1940s and 1950s throughout the hemisphere. Social Realism grew out of the Ashcan School, a group of early 20th-century American painters who depicted the gritty realities of city life. John Sloan, Robert Henri, George Bellows, and George Luks painted scenes of tenements, saloons, boxing matches, and street life in New York. The Ashcan painters were not explicitly political, but they introduced the principle that American art should depict American life as it was actually lived, not as it was idealized.
The Great Depression, which began with the stock market crash of October 1929, created the conditions for Social Realism to flourish. Unemployment reached 25% by 1933. Millions of Americans lost their homes, their savings, and their livelihoods. The economic catastrophe made social and economic inequality impossible to ignore, and artists responded by turning their attention to the lives of ordinary people.
The federal government played a direct role. The Works Progress Administration (WPA), established in 1935 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, included the Federal Art Project, which employed thousands of artists to create murals, paintings, sculptures, and prints for public buildings. The WPA gave artists a paycheck, a sense of community, and the mandate to paint realistically. Many of the most important Social Realist works were created under WPA sponsorship, including murals in post offices, schools, and government buildings across the country. The Cascadia Art Museum in Washington State presented Northwest Social Realism and the American Scene: 1930-1950, an exhibition focused on Northwest artists and their depictions of everyday life during the Depression and WWII period, many reflecting industrial, political, and social aspects of the era. The presence of Mexican muralists in the United States was another key influence. Diego Rivera lived and worked in the U.S. from 1930 to 1933, painting murals in San Francisco, Detroit, and New York. Jose Clemente Orozco painted murals at Pomona College in California (1930), the New School for Social Research in New York (1931), and Dartmouth College (1932-1934). David Alfaro Siqueiros taught at the John Reed Club in New York, where he influenced a generation of American artists. The Mexican muralists demonstrated that public art could address social and political themes directly, without the mediation of galleries or collectors.
Shahn is the most important Social Realist painter. The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti (1931-1932) is his defining work, 23 gouaches that tell the story of the trial and execution of the Italian anarchists. Shahn later painted murals for the WPA, including Resources of America (1939) at the Bronx Central Annex Post Office. His The Red Canvas (1934) and Unemployment (1934) depict the human cost of the Depression. Shahn's style combines precise drawing with simplified, almost cartoon-like figures, giving his work a directness that makes it feel like propaganda in the best sense: art that persuades through clarity rather than subtlety.
Gropper was the most politically aggressive of the Social Realists. A former cartoonist for the Yiddish Daily Forward and The New Masses, Gropper produced paintings, prints, and cartoons that attacked capitalism, fascism, and political corruption with savage caricature. The Senate (1935) shows bloated politicians as grotesque figures. His Coal and Steel (1937) depicts industrial workers bent under the weight of their labor. Gropper was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953, and his passport was revoked for six years.
Lawrence brought Social Realism to the experience of Black Americans. His Migration Series (1940-1941) is a set of 60 small tempera panels that tell the story of the Great Migration, the movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North between 1910 and 1940. The panels show families packing, trains departing, crowded housing, labor disputes, and race riots. Lawrence painted the entire series at once, mixing colors as he went to maintain consistency across all 60 panels. The series was exhibited at the Downtown Gallery in New York in 1941, making Lawrence the first Black artist represented by a major New York gallery. The panels are now split between the Phillips Collection in Washington and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Evergood's American Tragedy (1947) depicts the Memorial Day Massacre of 1937, in which Chicago police killed ten striking steelworkers and wounded 30 others. The painting shows police on horseback charging into a crowd of workers, with a fallen man in the foreground. Evergood's style is expressionistic, with distorted figures and vivid color that heighten the emotional impact. He also painted The Hundredth Psalm (1938-1939), a WPA mural at a Queens public housing project.
White dedicated his career to depicting the dignity and struggle of Black Americans. His large charcoal drawings and lithographs, including The Contribution of the Negro to American Democracy (1943), show Black historical figures and ordinary people with monumental presence. White worked for the WPA in Illinois and later taught in Los Angeles, where he influenced a generation of Black artists including Kerry James Marshall and David Hammons.
Social Realism's first phase runs from the late 1920s to approximately 1939, centered on the Great Depression and the WPA. This is the period of the movement's greatest visibility and influence, when artists were employed by the federal government to paint murals and when social and economic themes dominated American art. The second phase runs from 1939 to the mid-1950s, when the movement came under pressure from two directions. The rise of Abstract Expressionism in New York shifted the art world's attention away from figurative painting and toward abstraction. The Cold War and McCarthyism made leftist politics dangerous, and many Social Realist artists were investigated, blacklisted, or had their passports revoked.
The Popular Front period, beginning in 1935, broadened the movement. Under the slogan "Communism is Twentieth-Century Americanism," the Communist Party sought to unite left and liberal Americans against fascism. This allowed progressive artists who were not extreme radicals to join the cause. More artists took up anti-fascist themes, and the hardline commitment to worker-based imagery lessened. The John Reed Clubs, which had promoted proletarian art, were dissolved in 1935.
By the 1950s, Social Realism had been eclipsed. Abstract Expressionism, with its emphasis on individual expression and formal innovation, was promoted by American institutions as evidence of cultural freedom in contrast to Soviet Socialist Realism. The irony was that Social Realism, which had been an independent and critical movement, was dismissed as propaganda, while Abstract Expressionism was embraced as freedom, even as it was secretly promoted by the CIA as a Cold War weapon.
Social Realism's legacy was suppressed for decades but has been reassessed in recent years. The movement produced some of the most powerful political art in American history, and its influence can be seen in contemporary artists who address social and political themes, from Kara Walker to Ai Weiwei. The WPA murals remain in post offices and government buildings across the country, a visible reminder of a period when the federal government employed artists to depict American life. The movement's insistence that art should address social reality rather than retreat into formal experimentation remains a live question in contemporary art.
Social Realism is closely related to Realism, the 19th-century movement that also depicted ordinary life, though Social Realism was more explicitly political. It was directly influenced by Mexican Muralism, which provided both a model and a direct presence through Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros working in the United States. It is distinct from Soviet Socialist Realism, which was state-mandated, while Social Realism was independent. The movement overlaps with the Expressionism of the early 20th century in its use of distortion for emotional impact. For more on political art, read our post on art and protest.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington holds the largest collection of WPA-era art, including works by Shahn, Gropper, and Evergood. The Phillips Collection holds half of Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series, with the other half at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. WPA murals can be found in post offices across the country, many of them still in their original locations. The Whitney Museum of American Art holds significant Social Realist works in its permanent collection.
If you want to trace Social Realism from its origins to its legacy, start at the Smithsonian American Art Museum for the WPA collection, then visit the Phillips Collection and MoMA for the two halves of Lawrence's Migration Series, and look for WPA murals in your local post office. You will see how a movement that treated art as a political weapon produced work that still speaks to the social and economic issues of today.
