What Is Halation and How Does It Work?
Halation has two aspects: a perceptual phenomenon and a painting technique. The perceptual phenomenon is based on how the human eye processes contrast. When a bright area is surrounded by darkness, the bright area appears to glow. The greater the contrast, the stronger the glow. This is not a property of the paint. It is a property of the eye. The painting technique of halation involves placing warm tones, such as reds, oranges, and yellows, at the junctions between light and dark values. A second technique is the dark halo, used by 17th-century painters to manage the optical effect known as simultaneous contrast. Simultaneous contrast, described by Michel Eugene Chevreul in 1839, is the phenomenon whereby the eye exaggerates the difference between two contiguous colors. When a light-colored form sits against a dark background, the eye perceives the form as lighter and the background as darker than they actually are. A 2021 study published in npj Heritage Science examined the dark halo technique in the work of Michael Sweerts and other Flemish and Dutch Baroque painters. The study argues that these halos were a practical tool used in the early painting stages to provide a tonal reference for the artist. The Science of Simultaneous Contrast and the Crispening Effect
The 2021 npj Heritage Science study provides the most detailed analysis of why Baroque painters used dark halos. The researchers built on an existing hypothesis that halos can be considered a solution to an optical problem that arose when Baroque painters reversed the traditional 15th- and 16th-century painting sequence of working from background to foreground. Instead, they started with the dominant parts of a composition, such as the face of a sitter. In that case, a temporary halo can provide the essential tonal reference to anticipate the chromatic impact of the final dark-colored background on the adjacent delicate flesh tones.
The study connects the halo technique to two optical effects described in the scientific literature only centuries after Baroque painters were using them: simultaneous contrast and the crispening effect. Simultaneous contrast, demonstrated by Chevreul in 1839, causes the eye to exaggerate the difference between two contiguous colors. The crispening effect, described later, causes edges to appear sharper when a thin band of contrasting tone separates two areas. The study argues that "by laying a black ring around a target color, the optical impact of a surrounding color can be efficiently neutralized," and that this "ring condition" is the present-day equivalent of the halo solution that 17th-century artists developed empirically.
The study also notes that the disclosure of many halos using infrared photography, infrared reflectography, and macro X-ray fluorescence imaging, in addition to those visible to the naked eye, suggests that this was a common and established element of 17th-century painting practice in Western Europe.
Origins and History
Halation as a perceptual phenomenon is as old as human vision. As a painting technique, it emerged most clearly in the Baroque period, when painters were working with extreme contrasts of light and dark. Caravaggio's tenebrism created the conditions for halation by placing brightly lit figures against near-black backgrounds. The illuminated areas appear to glow because the contrast is so extreme.
The dark halo technique appears to have been a practical response to the shift in painting sequence that occurred in the 17th century. When painters began working from the figure outward, rather than from the background inward, they needed a way to judge flesh tones before the background was in place. The dark halo provided that reference. Ella Hendriks, discussing the working methods of Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck, supplied the most plausible theory: the technique was a way to provide a "foil against which the tones of the portrait could be established." With the dark halo applied along the contours of the sitter's face, the artist could establish the correct highlights, midtones, and shadow tones immediately, anticipating the effect of the unrealized dark background.
The technique was not limited to a single painter or region. The 2021 study found dark halos in the work of Michael Sweerts, a Flemish painter who worked in Rome, and in the work of Dutch portrait painters like Verspronck. The prevalence of the technique across Flemish, Dutch, and Roman Baroque painting suggests that it was a shared practice, transmitted through workshops and studio traditions.
Key Artists Who Used Halation
Caravaggio (1571-1610)
Caravaggio's tenebrist paintings create halation through extreme contrast. In The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599-1600, Contarelli Chapel, Rome), the shaft of light hitting Matthew and the surrounding figures creates a natural halation effect: the illuminated areas appear to glow against the surrounding darkness. Caravaggio did not need to paint a halo. The contrast itself produces the effect.
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Rembrandt's use of light creates halation through both contrast and warm color. In his late self-portraits from the 1660s, the illuminated areas of the face are surrounded by warm, golden tones at the boundary between light and shadow. These warm edges create a glow that makes the light appear to radiate from within the figure rather than striking it from outside.
Michael Sweerts (1618-1664)
Sweerts is the painter most closely associated with the dark halo technique in the 2021 npj Heritage Science study. The research examined his work in detail, finding that he adapted the halo technique to his individual challenges, including dealing with differently colored grounds. Sweerts's resourceful approach to the halo demonstrates that the technique was not a rigid formula but a flexible tool that painters could modify to suit their specific needs.
Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck (1606-1662)
Verspronck, a Dutch portrait painter, used the dark halo technique along the contours of his sitters' faces. Hendriks's analysis of his working methods provided the foundational theory for understanding the halo as a tonal reference tool. Wayne Thiebaud (1920-2021)
Thiebaud, an American painter known for his paintings of cakes, pies, and everyday objects, used halation as a signature technique. He placed warm tones, particularly pinks and oranges, at the edges where light meets shadow in his paintings. The effect makes his subjects appear to glow from within, giving even inanimate objects like cakes a sense of luminous presence. Thiebaud's halation is not Baroque in origin. It is a modern adaptation of the same optical principle.
How to Spot Halation in a Painting
Look at the boundaries between light and dark. If the illuminated area appears to glow or radiate outward, you are seeing halation. The effect is strongest where the contrast is greatest: a bright form against a dark background, or a shaft of light in a dark space.
For the dark halo technique, look for dark bands along the contours of figures in Baroque portraits. These bands are not shadows in the naturalistic sense. They are tonal references that the painter placed to control the optical relationship between the figure and the background. In some paintings, the halos are partially visible on the surface because the upper paint layers have become more transparent with age. In others, they are visible only through infrared or X-ray imaging.
For the warm-edge technique, look for warm colors at the junction between light and shadow. In Rembrandt's late work at the Rijksmuseum, the golden glow at the edges of illuminated flesh is a form of halation. In Thiebaud's paintings at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento or the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the pink and orange edges around his subjects are halation used as a decorative and expressive device.
A separate but related phenomenon was documented in a 2022 study published in Open Science Journal. The study searched 113,962 paintings for representations of sclerotic scatter, an optical effect in the human eye where light scatters through the sclera and appears as an arc of light on the shadowed side of the iris. The researchers found this effect in 83 paintings, most from the Renaissance (44) and Baroque (15) periods, typically in works with dark backgrounds. This "light through darkness" effect is a form of halation applied to the depiction of eyes, and it demonstrates how closely painters observed the behavior of light at boundaries. Halation is closely related to chiaroscuro, the general use of light-dark contrast to model form and create drama. It is also connected to tenebrism, which pushes chiaroscuro to its extreme and creates the conditions for the strongest halation effects.
